A girl runs contests for 8 months and gets lots of grief today of all days about them. Let me explain something that people who are not bloggers don’t realize.
Running a blog takes time.
No. Scratch that.
Running a blog takes HOURS and HOURS and HOURS a day, 8 days week. Between content management, marketing, subject matter, writing, meetings…and oh yes, we have meetings, and more. And know what? So many bloggers do it as a, dare I say the word, “hobby”.
Hobby meaning FREE.
Can you believe people out there open up a site, spend 25 hours a week on making it awesome, and then donate their expertise and interests into running basically advertising for other companies and for their visitors to receive free products?
I know. Its amazing. Maybe slightly stupid. But definitely amazing.
Most bloggers are lucky to walk away with $50 a month from advertising from their blog, but most just meander around and do it for fun. Just like every magazine, radio station, and media outlet out there, bloggers determine their own site and how their policies work. We have a contest policy, and advertising policy, a TOS, and Privacy Policy. If you scroll over those handy dandy little buttons there on the top you can read everything about us. Its neat. Its called scripting.
The way we do ours is flat out 48 hours to claim a prize. Half the time well over 48 hours pass….its usually more like a week before I get around to repulling. Regardless, why so little? Why not a week? Why not 10 days? Because that contest is not the only thing I have going on in my life.
Shocker, huh.
I probably have 50 contests going on and 10 blog posts a day, a forum, a show on Fridays, a radio show starting in a week, 2 businesses and a FAMILY.
See how that family thing is written last? That’s because that is how they feel when I have to hold someones hand on claiming a prize. It makes my DH cry when I have to babysit my blog visitors.
This blogs policy is to get a contest moving for the benefit of our readers, pick a winner, get a winner to the sponsor, and be done with it. If someone doesn’t care enough to do one of the following things:
- Follow us on twitter
- Put us in your blogroll to check
- Put us in your feedburner
- Send our posts to your email
Then the prize isn’t that important to you . In fact…I feel a bit used if you drop an email and run.
We run contests for three reasons:
1) the benefit of the sponsor who is looking to get thier face and links in front of an audience
2) to benefit our readers who spend time here and we want to give back as a thank you for their time
3) to gain new readers and expose them to our blog via a contest they may have come over to check out
And yes, we are going to make you visit the sponsors site 9 times out of 10 so puhleese don’t complain about it. In fact, if you don’t want to visit the site and check out the products, why the hell are you trying to WIN a product from that company? I actually heard a blogger a few weeks back say that someone left a comment complaining about having to check out the sponsors site.
HELLO. FREE PRODUCT.
Let me rephrase so I don’t stutter.
F*R*E*E*
In fact…it’s all free. I don’t charge for you to enter and in turn, i expect you to come back and read and interact with my witty and interesting daily commentary.
I suppose I could do raffle tickets….like a $1 an entry on all prizes. Then Ill get paid to do it and can wait out the SEVEN months that it took someone to try to claim a prize from me today. But then I would owe the government like 29 cents for every $1 and…….see, complicated.
The truth is we run contests because they are fun. We want you to be involved, not give us a one night stand comment and leave us with a number that doesn’t work when we dial it. If you don’t have time to visit us, put us in your reader or add our posts to your email and then you can keep up on your own turf. If someone misses out on a prize, show up to our Friday show where we regive the prizes live to someone that attends.
Second chance, how thoughtful of you Trisha!
I know. I know.
Other than that, quitcherbitchin.

I totally agree with you! your 100% right. Just an FYI – I appreciate all that you do! : )
Great article! Feels good to vent sometimes doesn’t it? Don’t change a thing! You rock!
I TOTALLY agree – unless I win something
Some days it just doesn’t pay to open email, read comments, or get out of bed.
((((HUGS)))

Nice to get it straight from your perspective. The amount of time I spend trying to manage contests is staggering. Most go smoothly, without a bump…but there’s always the one where the winner used a toss-away e-mail to sign-up and it takes a long time to try to verify whether they participated or even who they are.
@ Sarah:
your not wrong.
Wait. (I’ve been starting a lot of comments like that lately because I’m confused and looking for clarification – not because I’m an idiot.) Are you saying that this person won the prize 7 months ago and is JUST NOW trying to claim it? And they didn’t think it would be gone? Please tell me that I am off base on this. Please tell me that I read that wrong.
I look like Einstein right now if that was the case!
It’s your policy and those entering should understand it.
Yes, sometimes the people who enter have emergencies in their lives too (like a spouse going in for emergency surgery, deaths in the family etc.), but they should still realize if they can’t come back to claim a prize in time, ahh well. They really didn’t lose anything but a little bit of time to enter. They didn’t have to pay for your time, and they didn’t have to pay for the prize, so they shouldn’t email you and complain.
You do it your way, so you can have time for your own family.
God bless you and yours.
Makes sense…it IS a contest afterall.
LMFAO. Quitcherbitchin. Love it!
I’m a 48 hour girl too!
Well said! I couldn’t agree more!
And, seriously, how hard is it to follow the rules?
Another thing that is frustrating is when people say “Oh you are just getting free stuff”. I don’t consider it free when I work for it.
I think your policy is perfect and I’ll probably start doing the same thing very soon.
As for doing the blogging thing for free and putting your family dead last, well, I relate to that too–and that’s kind of a sad commentary, isn’t it?
I need to keep doing the things that work for me in helping me put my family FIRST and my blog LAST–schedule everything on Sundays and not be so worried if I don’t update my blog every damn day that ends in Y.
Check out this interview with Marc Warnke, the self-professed “Family First Entrepreneur”–it’s an eye opener and maybe it’ll help all of us mom bloggers start a “Family First Blogger” movement. I think you’ll really like it.

Thanks for being so real & for touching upon a subject that I think affects MANY bloggers.

I couldn’t agree more! Great post!
AMEN!!!!! Seriously, there aren’t enough exclamation points to express HOW MUCH I agree with you! I’ve had so many people NOT claim their prize and then come back and be upset at me…and I EMAIL them more than ONCE to let them know they won…ugh…
About a month ago, I had a person leave a comment on a contest I was doing with Whole Foods. The first entry (stipulated by WF) was to listen to a 4 minute podcast and leave a comment…this person took the TIME to leave a comment saying that it was too much to have to do and…”you need to smarten up”
What’s funny is this person enters my contests all the time and never does the required entry…just leaves the “count me in!” comment-lol.
What’s the point in taking time to enter contests if you can’t even follow the directions?!
I love your contests and I love your rules! I love going to the sponsors site because YOU make it fun. I usually end up spending so much time drooling over everything on the sponsors site!! I cant belive someone tried to claim a prize from that many months ago! Your rules are CLEARLY stated everywhere!
So very well said!!!
I love you. That is all. LOL
I email my winners, which means that I ask with every giveaway “Leave your email in the body of your comment.” Still I get entry after entry from people with no email in the comment, no email in the Blogger link that is sent to me, no email in their Blogger profile, no email even on their stinking blog or “about me” page. And yes, I’m nice enough (read: SMALL enough) that I go to that much trouble to see if I can find their email. I’ve deleted so many entries now that it’s moved from feeling bad for them to feeling highly annoyed. My policies are not just for me, they’re for YOU.
You said it!
I normally email my winners and give them 48 hours to respond, but for my current giveaway ending tonight, they are required to check back to see if they’ve.
There is NO way I am going to email 29 different winners after going through the buttload of comments to sort out the entries!
If someone doesn’t like your policy Trisha, they shouldn’t enter! I don’t blame you… You are ONE VERY BUSY lady and if they want the prize, they should be willing to put forth a little extra effort!
I don’t run contests because I am too disorganized and forgetful and would screw it up royally, no doubt. Also, if I win a prize on someone’s site, I most often don’t even know it, and I’m quite okay with that, because, as you’ve put it, it’s not YOUR problem, it’s mine.
I know it’s hard to keep up with all the contests out there. I used to enter a TON and I would have missed a bunch that I won if the people didn’t email me. BUT, I now know the other side and know how busy it can get. I say to know each blog’s policy before you enter their contest so you know if you need to subscribe or come back to see if you won. It’s something free you’re getting, so if you don’t want to follow that blog’s rules, then don’t enter.
Love it!
Well said! I can’t stand when someone complains about any of my stipulations for contests…
Preach it girl!
PERFECTLY said. well done.
Thats my policy too!! Some people just want everything handed to them…like they’re entitled or something! Well Said!
And personally, I think it is a great policy! There is no reason for someone to wait months to claim a prize. I contact my winner once and if I don’t hear back from them in the allotted time I move on to a new winner.
AMEN to that!! I do the 48 hour thing too!
