With all the new toys coming out for the holidays, I wasn’t surprised to see this new Action Shot Cam in my Toys R Us big book.
Perfect for active kids the age range of 7 and up, this camera has a ton of accessories that can take the bounce, rattle, roll, and even plunge into water, of its caretaker.
What is the Action Shot Cam?
The product itself, the Action Shot Cam, you purchase in and of itself. It’s a standard SD camera that hosts either 2.5 minutes of internal storage or you can add a mini SD card that takes approx 60 minutes of footage. You can also add pieces onto the camera that snap into place that are specific to your or your child’s needs. Waterproof, Hi-Impact, Mounting kit for bike handles, and even a video viewer attachment for instant playback.
What does mom think? The good.
I could absolutely see a busy 9 year old boy hooping and hollering on his bike or sharing his awesome skateboarding footage. Surely interesting for the kid that likes to make movies or wants his own independence without a parent fretting over their $300 action camera getting busted, it has its uses. Part of finding the right toy for your child is to get them involved and I could see this being an encouraging way to get your child up and busy. You can plug the device right into the computer for charging and loading, although the only way I could get it to recognize on my Mac was to put it on a memory card and move it over after being loaded onto the PC. That proved to be time consuming and annoying just to see editing.
I like the fact that it can take a punch. When putting together with the Hi Impact case, its a not going to fall on the ground and bust into a ton of pieces.
What does mom think: The Other
Initially I had a thought process that my very busy outdoor daughter or on the go toddler would have some interesting footage but the reality is that its made specifically for sports. When I handed it off to my toddler hoping for something funny, I received tons of static noise from his hands. When I strapped him with it and he fell down, he wasn’t so happy falling on a camera piece. I also strapped it to my dog and it either had to be faced at the ground or at the sky, neither which made terribly interesting shots.
Running around the yard produced some decent footage.
My concerns are that there is no way to know the camera is pointing the right way while taking the footage. There is also no way to reshow how long you have left before it goes out, at least none that I noted on the internal storage. Also it needs a ton of lighting. If you are outside its fine, but indoors can be much darker unless you are in a well lit area.

My grandson will be doing his beginner’s crawling where he mostly scoots backwards or half-sits and then falls over. He also does a lot of frogkicks with a smile on his face, but doesn’t go anywhere. I like the idea of seeing the world from a kid’s eye view.

Gosh – there’s no telling what my kids might do with the Action Shot Cam, but I could see them riding bikes or playing frisbee with it.
