Our last event was held in Destin, FL at the Emerald Grande Resort at Harborwalk Village.
It’s a beautiful location full of incredible shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.
And best of all, the HarborWalk and the hotel both had free wifi. That’s like telling kids everything in the ice cream truck is free – we were able to Facebook and Tweet and Instagram to our heart’s content.
Brandcation is all about supporting our sponsors, and you know we were hard at work since almost every single picture included someone on their cell phone.
All that cell phone use comes with a risk, though, and not just of dropping your phone in the water.
Did you know that according to Hotspot Shield, nearly half of all wifi networks are unsecured and unencrypted? Most of us don’t think twice about cell phone security when we’re on a trip and want to share a photo or message with social networks. We tend to link up to whatever internet is available so we can upload and post from our phones.
75% of people that have used wifi have experienced cyber crime. That’s a lot higher than I realized. We had 34 bloggers on our Brandcation DESTINation trip and I bet we all used the free wifi many times throughout our trip. Which isn’t bad by itself, but it is certainly dangerous if we’re not protecting ourselves.
Hotspot Shield, a secure VPN connection service, helps explain the risk of using open wifi networks and why it can be a dangerous behavior.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m on a trip with 34 other influential bloggers, I don’t want to worry about my accounts getting hacked.
I’d much rather spend time making connections, building relationships, and promoting our sponsors.
