Zoes Kitchen; Healthy takeout

I am not someone that overly worries when I am out to eat about eating healthy. Honestly, if I get that worried I should probably be at home cooking, but sometimes I do like to have my fast meal fresh as well. In my city I feel like I have eaten almost everywhere, but a few weeks back while Phoenyx and I were on one of our many (MANY) trips to Gymboree here in Mobile, we took the stroller from end to end in the shopping complex and noticed a restaurant we had never been in! So when we had used our energy on shopping and needed a refill, we headed down and had lunch.

What kind of food does Zoes Kitchen have?

(sample of my local menu, you can see yours by going to the site and putting in your zip code)

zoes-kitchen-menu

They say the kitchen is the heart and soul of the home. You might say fresh ingredients are the heart and soul of Zoës Kitchen. Our tasty, Mediterranean-inspired recipes originate from the southern kitchen of founder Zoë Cassimus, drawing from her Greek heritage. Today, everything is still made fresh daily. Zoës Kitchen is a natural extension of Zoë Cassimus’ lifetime of cooking for family and friends. Inspired by Zoë’s original recipes and her simple, fresh-from-the-garden sensibility, we start every day by making the food from scratch onsite at each restaurant. Our dishes are wholesome; our portions generous. It’s Mediterranean-inspired comfort food with customers’ dietary concerns in mind–nothing fried with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Zoë means “life” in Greek. Why not live it to the fullest with tasty food shared among close friends and family?

Local Zoes Kitchen in Mobile

Our local place was lively and bright and the people friendly! While you do have to wait a tad longer for your food, its because the food is made fresh. Therefore if you are picking out something like steak kabobs (like I did) be prepared to wait for them to be prepared!

Is the food any good at Zoes Kitchen?

Well, food is always subjective to your own tastes and I really like Mediterranean food, so I say yes. My husband isn’t a fan of some of the cheeses used in many Greek dishes, but he remarked later on how full he felt for hours after and not a full from eating too much, but a full from eating the right amount.  I think that meant he didn’t feel grossly disgusting like he would after a double cheeseburger.

I have been back to Zoes Kitchen atleast twice since the first time and it continues to impress! So next time you are out and about and see one, it’s worth stopping.

Disclaimer: first visit I paid for personally, second Zoes Kitchen invited me back to try a dish, third I paid for. All opinions are my own.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Review

This past year I have seen a handful of movies in the the theater and most of them have been kid related. It’s pretty hard for a family of four with one under the age of 2, to ever get to a screening so as parents we generally end up taking Charlotte on her own. And even though I tried and tried, we never did make it to the new 2012 Disney Movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green when it was out. So recently when I had a chance to sit down with my family and watch it, I was excited to see a movie I hadn’t seen yet and was interested in. Truth be told, I knew nothing about this movie other than the previews.

Here is a preview in case you haven’t had a chance to see it:

What is The Odd Life of Timothy Green About?

Director/writer Peter Hedges brings enchantment to the screen with The Odd Life of Timothy Green, an inspiring, magical story about a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim — and their small town of Stanleyville — learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. — (C) Disney

My Thoughts:

I got two things out of this kid movie. The first thing I said to my husband when it was over was “I am not sure the lesson?” Generally I find that Disney movies have a very clear cut lesson to them and I didn’t find it right away.  That was probably just me looking for the ultimate ending when in fact this movie was nothing more than a feel good flick meant for a family to sit, enjoy the story, and smile.  The second was that the “life is what you make of it” message was loud and clear and Timothy could not have been more likeable- as an actor and as a movie.

In fact, I found the acting pretty good and the movie done in a way that left my whole family happy at the end. And I’ll admit, I did shed a few tears when Timothy left and the sadness this family had to endure after so much heartache, which meant to me that the movie had enough stick to make it worth the watch.

We LOVE Disney Movies!

As the movie progressed you started to realize he was losing his leaves accomplishing each task his parents had wished him to be. I think at that point I saw where this was heading and I had to shake off and enjoy what was clearly a sugar coated Disney Treat.

My favorite scene were the ones where Timothy Green (actor CJ Adams) and Uncle Bub (M Emmet Walsh) had dialogue. They felt natural and very much like a family- no matter how Timothy arrived.

Where to buy Timothy Green:

The Odd Life of Timothy Green was available starting December 4th and you can buy it on Amazon or one of your local retailers. It is a perfect addition to a family collection that contains heartwarming safe flicks that everyone can enjoy without worrying in regards to context. What your family can take away from this movie is simply tolerance and finding that the simple things in life are worth noting.

Tips for Safe Shopping This Holiday!

Shop. Shop. Shop. Its the theme of the week, of the month, and of the rest of the year. Nothing makes me personally more happy than shopping and as you can tell my from my Top Gifts from Ebay post and 12 days of Giving, that there are plenty of ways to open up your heart and get involved this holiday season. From back to school in August to sitting round the Christmas tree, your wallet is going to be pulled in and out and online pretty much for the duration of 6 months out of the year.

But how safe is it?  To be honest, I am not sure. With the onslaught of Internet sites, it’s hard to detect the ones that could be scams vs the ones that are really there to offer you great deals and purchases. Aside from being cautious, there are a few things that you can do to protect yourself while shopping this season.

Tips for Safe Shopping This Holiday

1) Use the same credit card for shopping online. If you just pick one card, if that card does get comprised, its only one set of money that has to be locked down. If you utilize many cards, and they all get stolen, you could be out a ton of money to thief’s. Additionally with only one card to monitor for purchase, you would be more likely to catch a fraudulent charge.

2) Keep your computer spyware, walls, and virus protection up to date. I lost an entire computer to a terrible virus back in July and since then have learned my lesson to be protected over and over again. You do many personal things on your computer and one wrong downloaded virus can take the information and send it back out without you even knowing. I use Norton and Malware Bytes.

3) Only shop on secure sites that end an an “S”, as in https.

4) Keep a front and back copy of your credit card in an at home safe. This way if a card get stolen, you have immediate asses to all the information you need to get the card shut off and will feel less panicked.

5) Limit the amount of cards and Ids in your wallet. One problem many people have is they put everything in a wallet or purse. If you put all your credit cards, IDs, social security card, and health cards in one place, you are writing a blank check if you lose that item. Bring only what you need when you go shopping!

6) Remember that phones are everywhere and phones have cameras! Only take out your cards when you are ready to use them and keep them as private as possible.

7) Use a company like LifeLock to help identify theft. Wanna learn more? See below!

Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups

My daughter has a thing for dogs. So much so that the last few years she has done nothing but BEG for one till we broke down. I am sure you remember Captain and of course you now know Jedi. And while our dog experience hasn’t always been great, I am always good for a dog movie!

You can turn that off and you don’t have to feed it or clean up its dog poop!

So when the New Disney Movie (2012) Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups came out, I knew that was one dog (or a ton of dogs really!) that we could agree on around here.

We love Disney Movies!

What is Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups about?

An all-new Disney holiday classic is born—Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups. Starring a brand-new litter of the cutest talking pups ever—Hope, Jingle, Charity and Noble—it’s perfect for the whole family. When Mrs. Claus travels to Pineville, the playful Santa Pups stow away on her sled. Taking mischief to a whole new level, they begin granting joyful wishes to Pineville’s boys and girls, but something goes terribly wrong—the Christmas spirit begins to disappear. Now the Santa Pups and Mrs. Claus must race to save Christmas around the world. From the creators of Disney Buddies, this magical, heartwarming tale is brimming with hope, cheer and Christmas spirit

Charlotte’s Thoughts:

Charlotte (7 years) tells me about the movie in her words:

A little girl that wants to make Christmas better.  (me: did the dogs help?) The dogs didn’t really help a lot. *giggle*

What part did you like the most?

When Mrs. Clause came to the city where the girl was singing.

What was your favorite part about the dogs?

The little puppies with the mom and when the Christmas dog says “I’m a father!”

Anything else you want to tell me?

At the end of the story there was a happy ending.

 Did you like this movie?

YES!

How to buy Santa Paws 2:

You can get Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups on November 20th at any major retailer like Walmart, Target, or Best Buy and of course, one of my favorite places to shop, Amazon or eBay.
