Zoes Kitchen; Healthy takeout

I am not someone that overly worries when I am out to eat about eating healthy. Honestly, if I get that worried I should probably be at home cooking, but sometimes I do like to have my fast meal fresh as well. In my city I feel like I have eaten almost everywhere, but a few weeks back while Phoenyx and I were on one of our many (MANY) trips to Gymboree here in Mobile, we took the stroller from end to end in the shopping complex and noticed a restaurant we had never been in! So when we had used our energy on shopping and needed a refill, we headed down and had lunch.

What kind of food does Zoes Kitchen have?

(sample of my local menu, you can see yours by going to the site and putting in your zip code)

They say the kitchen is the heart and soul of the home. You might say fresh ingredients are the heart and soul of Zoës Kitchen. Our tasty, Mediterranean-inspired recipes originate from the southern kitchen of founder Zoë Cassimus, drawing from her Greek heritage. Today, everything is still made fresh daily. Zoës Kitchen is a natural extension of Zoë Cassimus’ lifetime of cooking for family and friends. Inspired by Zoë’s original recipes and her simple, fresh-from-the-garden sensibility, we start every day by making the food from scratch onsite at each restaurant. Our dishes are wholesome; our portions generous. It’s Mediterranean-inspired comfort food with customers’ dietary concerns in mind–nothing fried with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Zoë means “life” in Greek. Why not live it to the fullest with tasty food shared among close friends and family?

Local Zoes Kitchen in Mobile

Our local place was lively and bright and the people friendly! While you do have to wait a tad longer for your food, its because the food is made fresh. Therefore if you are picking out something like steak kabobs (like I did) be prepared to wait for them to be prepared!

Is the food any good at Zoes Kitchen?

Well, food is always subjective to your own tastes and I really like Mediterranean food, so I say yes. My husband isn’t a fan of some of the cheeses used in many Greek dishes, but he remarked later on how full he felt for hours after and not a full from eating too much, but a full from eating the right amount.  I think that meant he didn’t feel grossly disgusting like he would after a double cheeseburger.

I have been back to Zoes Kitchen atleast twice since the first time and it continues to impress! So next time you are out and about and see one, it’s worth stopping.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Review

This past year I have seen a handful of movies in the the theater and most of them have been kid related. It’s pretty hard for a family of four with one under the age of 2, to ever get to a screening so as parents we generally end up taking Charlotte on her own. And even though I tried and tried, we never did make it to the new 2012 Disney Movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green when it was out. So recently when I had a chance to sit down with my family and watch it, I was excited to see a movie I hadn’t seen yet and was interested in. Truth be told, I knew nothing about this movie other than the previews.

Here is a preview in case you haven’t had a chance to see it:

What is The Odd Life of Timothy Green About?

Director/writer Peter Hedges brings enchantment to the screen with The Odd Life of Timothy Green, an inspiring, magical story about a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim — and their small town of Stanleyville — learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. — (C) Disney

My Thoughts:

I got two things out of this kid movie. The first thing I said to my husband when it was over was “I am not sure the lesson?” Generally I find that Disney movies have a very clear cut lesson to them and I didn’t find it right away.  That was probably just me looking for the ultimate ending when in fact this movie was nothing more than a feel good flick meant for a family to sit, enjoy the story, and smile.  The second was that the “life is what you make of it” message was loud and clear and Timothy could not have been more likeable- as an actor and as a movie.

In fact, I found the acting pretty good and the movie done in a way that left my whole family happy at the end. And I’ll admit, I did shed a few tears when Timothy left and the sadness this family had to endure after so much heartache, which meant to me that the movie had enough stick to make it worth the watch.

Scenes:

Timothy Green Movie

We LOVE Disney Movies!

As the movie progressed you started to realize he was losing his leaves accomplishing each task his parents had wished him to be. I think at that point I saw where this was heading and I had to shake off and enjoy what was clearly a sugar coated Disney Treat.

My favorite scene were the ones where Timothy Green (actor CJ Adams) and Uncle Bub (M Emmet Walsh) had dialogue. They felt natural and very much like a family- no matter how Timothy arrived.

Where to buy Timothy Green:

The Odd Life of Timothy Green was available starting December 4th and you can buy it on Amazon or one of your local retailers. It is a perfect addition to a family collection that contains heartwarming safe flicks that everyone can enjoy without worrying in regards to context. What your family can take away from this movie is simply tolerance and finding that the simple things in life are worth noting.

Fighting Hunger Together

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am lucky.

I know its easy to say that I work hard, I did the right things, I never stop, but the truth is part of that is also the cards I was lucky enough to draw, the parents I have, and that I was born into middle class America. I never forget the opportunities that I receive as a result grant me the privilege, not the right, to work hard and to continue to provide for my family. There are millions of Americans that are not so lucky and thousands in every city across this country. Whether by family, personal choices, economy, or no fault of their own, most people on the street do not make a decision to be there, but rather are put there based on a variety of circumstances they have yet to overcome.

My sister works with the homeless. Her and her husband own a church and directly feed the mouths of many on the streets. They raise money, food, and clothing almost every day of the year to provide a direct line to those that are not as lucky as you and I. While I am a volunteer in other aspects of my life, I have never gone into the same type of giving capacity she has. That being said, I still come from a highly charitable family and we do our best to consistently pass on to those in need and also to my sisters facility several times a year.

It's very easy to overlook others. It's very easy, even if you are struggling yourself, to bypass and not help those around you but it's time to stop that. We need to come together and there is never a better time than the holidays to be in unison to help even one person in your community.

What a difference that would make, wouldn't it?

This year even if you do not have anything to give monetarily, try to donate your time providing conversation, kindness, or assistance to charities around you. In addition, you can help companies like Walmart provide meals nationwide to families thorough the Feeding America initiative.

image001.jpg

In support of Hunger Action Month this September, Walmart will work with customers, suppliers and associates nationwide to donate up to 53 million meals to Feeding America and give $2.5 million for hunger relief.

The program comes at a critical time as 50 million Americans won’t know where their next meal will come from at some point this year—that’s one in six Americans.

Through October 12th, customers will be able to generate meal donations for Feeding America by purchasing select products from participating food suppliers (General Mills, Kellogs, Unilever, Kraft Foods, and ConAgra Foods) at Walmart stores and following instructions on the packaging, engaging in the “Give Meals” section of www.walmart.com/hunger, or using a mobile app to generate meal donations for Feeding America.

Also, participate in the Golden Spark promotion for a chance to win $50K for your community! Walmart will randomly award 40 “Golden Sparks” valued at $50,000 each to consumers who participate in the Fighting Hunger Together Golden Spark Promotion. The winners will choose a community to receive the funding to start or expand a backpack program that provides vital meals to food-insecure children during weekends when they do not have access to free- and reduced-price school meals. Walmart Associates will also have a chance to compete together for their store to win a Golden Spark by logging volunteer hours.

There are many easy ways you can help right now with securing meals for someone in need and providing hunger relief.

1) You can head over to Walmart.com, select a product and watch a video and that secures a meal

walmart_logo_214x54.gif (214×57)

or

2) You can launch the Jingit app and check in at Walmart and that secures a meal

or

3) Purchase products from some of the companies about that are Fighting Hunger Together and follow the instructions on the packaging.

There are no excuses. This has never been easier.

I encourage you to take a few momments to today to look around and do what you can to help someone that many not be as fortunate as you are.

Have you ever been a spot where you are hungry and needed a helping hand?

Do your dogs party? These do.

These dogs now have to PAARTY!!

And dogs in clothing are always pretty much always adorable! These cuties are from the new movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3. Considering the other movies are about Charlotte’s favorite of all time, I am looking forward to watching this one with her.

My favorite part?

95% of the dogs in the film are RESCUE DOGS!!

I just had to share!

Of course our family has its own fair share of animals in clothing…

Poor Jedi (who looks like he could be in this film!)

And napoleon…rest his soul.

I pretty much think a dog party looks awesome.

Carter’s, Fashion, Fall, Fun and $50 to spend!

When I think of Carters, I should be thinking of the hundreds (thousands?) of dollars I have spent since Charlotte was born outfitting my kids in cute clothing..much of which I didn’t need, but most definitely wanted.  Over the years Carters has made it easy to shop with them. Beautiful and stylish clothing in girls, handsome and darling outfits for boys, have made it hard to turn away the matching outfits, footie PJs, and countless onesies.

From his tiniest little guy days

to his big boy days

I am happy to keep dressing him in the clothing that not only lasts the daily washing machine runs, but that I can afford to replace as well!

HUGE HUGE HUGE!

Give big while still feeling little financial impact…

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Now that the holidays are looming (oh yes they are, do not be in denial) its time to start figuring out the who's, whats, and where of your shopping adventures. Personally, I get really bad about buying stuff in the beginning thinking it will save me money and then in the end, buying tons more stuff.

I just like to give, what can I say?

While there are hoards of retailers you can purchase from, not all of them are wallet friendly and no matter your personal financial situation, everyone deserves to feel positive about their holiday gifts experience. In hopes to help you get started sooner and organize your gift giving, I wanted to share a bit about Kmarts Layaway program.

Kmart_Logo_B&W.jpg (3 documents, 3 total pages)

What IS layaway?

Layaway is a great way for you to select all your gifts now and pay a little bit at a time. I do not know about you, but going in and purchasing hundreds of dollars of gifts in one trip isn't hard to do and also makes my stomach turn. Kmart's layaway program is 8 weeks long (they also have a 12 week program). One of the differences between Kmart's Layaway and Walmarts is this actually. Walmart usually has a $15 fee, although redujced to $5 right now, but Kmart has free layaway !

Why would I choose layaway?

Why not?

It's so easy to pick out great products now and pay them down so the impact on your family is less. From clothes to toys to DVDs, I think layaway can be really helpful for famlies that need a longer period to get gifts under control.

Personally I would put something like this on layaway:

And le'ts not forget that layaway as the added benefit of keeping the toys HIDDEN.

In my house, my daughter finds things in like 10 seconds. Accidentally of course, but I don't have the money to just run out and buy new to keep the Christmas spirit alive! Little eyes, little fingers, and little wallets are my reason for using layaway!

How does Kmart's layaway stack up to other retailers?

Are you diligent with your online security?

While we are talking today about being responsible with online communication and how we approach the topic with our kids, we should also talk about all the privacy and security that comes alone with having all of you information online. While the ease of purchasing and paying bills makes life so much more productive, it also presents a variety of security concerns that we often take for granted and ignore.

Just a few weeks ago I busted my phone to pieces leaving it a top the hood of my car and driving off. When I found the phone, and thankfully I found the phone, i was a lot more concerned with making sure my open apps and privacy codes were on because had I lost it for good, in one second my accounts could have been compromised by the most novice hacker. Its scary to live so much life online. We log into our bank accounts, our paypal accounts that connect to our credit cards, we purchase on amazon, we send money to friends and family and its all fine until someone with a savvy email that replicates a business you purchase from and turns it into a catch all for your social security or bank numbers.

LifeLock

You may have heard about LifeLock or have seen the commercials or radio spots. I know that I have. LifeLock is Identity Theft Protection that helps identify and be proactive regarding security risks for your family.  At only $25 a month, you can get the following:

  • The industry’s most complete Identity Theft Protection service
  • 24/7 online access to your monthly TransUnion credit score
  • Surveillance of unregulated global networks and file-sharing sites
  • The ULTIMATE in identity theft protection
  • LifeLock’s $1 Million Total Service Guarantee
  • Daily monitoring of all three Credit bureau reports
  • Checking and Savings account application alerts

I am one of those people that monitor my credit score and accounts a few times a year and up to date, have had relatively good luck with the companies that host my banks being on top of potential threats. In the past my spouse and I have had our credit card number stolen and used manually in a store across the country. Someone bought a sweater with it…odd, right? Our bank was smart enough to catch the weird out of town purchase and call us, which put a stop to it immediately. Recently I left my bank account at home and stopped and picked up fast food and had to use my credit card. My bank called me, while still sitting in the drive through, to ask if the purchase was OK.  And even though our bank recognizes odd purchases and acts quickly to prevent fraud, that isn’t that case for EVERY account we have under our names.

The next few months I am going to be checking out LifeLock and seeing how the system works and reporting back with how I felt about it protecting my name.  Right now I wanted to give you an overlook of the screens. When you sign in, they give you a day to day update on your credit scores (which is a great way to monitor your own financial footprint)

And you can also check alerts:

I will be sure to update you as things progress over the next few months. I know already LifeLock as let me know they have sent out letters on my  behalf to remove me from unsolicited credit card applications, which is fantastic.

Have you ever had your online identity or financial information compromised?

~trisha

I have received compensation for my participation as a LifeLock Ambassador. All opinions are my own.
