Charlottes Birthday Present:Opinions

Charlotte is a girly girl when it comes to hair, makeup, nails, and dresses. She is however quite the boy when it comes to playing. Hot Wheels GALORE in this house and we all know she has a thing for frogs.

frogs

You can say I have the best of both worlds complete with the 3 chin stitches.

Now because her birthday is just a month off of Christmas, to say she needs no new toys is an understatement. In fact, she needs no new ANYTHING.

I was telling my DH I should take her to the salon and let her get a pedi and mani complete with some nail polish. Its something she has never done outside of playtime at home and sounds like a cool idea. At least in my head.

Sorta a mom/daughter day out. I think she would find it very special.

Then I open my email today and it has this in it…call it some great Cosmic Sign of Bad Parenting:

Tyra Show is looking for moms with kids ages 5-13 who think pampering children teaches the wrong message.  Do you feel that children should not be getting manicures, pedicures, or spa treatments at a young age?  Do you feel that pampering teaches them you need to be “beautified” to feel beautiful?  If you are a mother AGAINST pampering, please respond ASAP – the show is next week!

Aside from the irony of The Tyra Show tackling this topic, instantly I’m like…am I bad mom? I didn’t even consider she was “too young” to go to the spa.

I was thinking it would be FUN, not damaging her psyche.

But then I started to wonder..what the hell is wrong with being beautiful? I think Charlotte is beautiful. I want her to know she is beautiful. Don’t we call that confidence? I tell her she is beautiful every day. So  now if we get our nails painted we cant be smart too?

I am sure I am over thinking this.

Which probably means I’m ugly.

Kids Birthday Parties: how much is too much?

Charlotte’s birthday is this month! She is turning 5. I am so proud of her. She is just a beautiful soul from the beginning.

growingup

But we have a dilemma.

In the past we have never had a large birthday party for her. We generally do something at home, with a cake, and if family is near us, ask them over. Its always been very intimate. But since most of our years with Charlotte have been spent on military bases and she was too young to ‘get it’, I never went “all out” for a party. In fact, her 1st birthday her and I spent alone. I think her 3rd birthday we invited some neighbors over and had some cake at the house. I cant even remember the other years. Thats how little I apparently did.

I should also mention that I am the cheapest person on the planet and really have to justify before I spent any amount of money over $20.

This year is different. She is in her 2nd year of school, she has a million friends, the neighbor kids, our family is here, she has cousins local, and this girl wants a PARTY.

Cake, presents, and everyone fawning over her. Trust me, she gets it.

We would like to to have it at the gymnastics studio she is a part of. Its a great place, she has been going for years and attends camp and classes.   Also, I refuse to have someone elses kids at my house that I have to entertain and I am not going to Chuck-e-cheese germy hell.

To rent out the gym for 2 hours is $315. It would include all the kids being about to play on the trampolines, jump pit, hanging ropes, and the staff to supervise and help. The cost is making me sick.

Someone tell me that isn’t overkill for a kids party and that I should do it.

Am I going to squash her creativity?

If I make her change and tell her that NOTHING on her outfit matches?  She didn’t even match her socks. Its like calculated fashion faux pas.

I just know we are going to end up on the People of Walmart site today.

The Competitive Advantage

Last night Charlotte had a gymnastics exhibition where all the parents got to watch their kids perform with their classes.

It was at this point I started to wonder if the milk Charlotte’s drinking has steroids in it.

Just forget…

Sometimes you have to forget you’re a mom, forget it’s “almost” bedtime, forget that the sugar surge will surely make you regret this, forget that she has school tomorrow, forget that you have a house to clean, bills to pay, and people still to shop for…and go out to get an ice cream for the sheer joy of remembering this moment.

Charlotte wrote a letter to Santa

Last month at the mall sometime, we ran into Santa. While she didn’t want to actually talk to him, (more like gawk, stare, and hide) he did manage to give us a little “Santa Stop Here” sign to put on our door and fill out the top 10 things that she wanted for Christmas on the back.

Of course with a child, those top 10 things change as quickly as the commercial does, but Charlotte brought it to me the day before yesterday and wanted to fill it out.

This is what she wrote.

santawish

1) Moxie Girls

(whew, we bought these…two of them actually)

2) Musketeer dress

(huh? I can only assume after watching the Barbie version of Three Muskateers no less than 393483984 times, she wants to be one)

3) Trampoline

(SCORE! This is on our list from Santa)

4) Basket with Food in it -like pineapples, apples, and watermelon. Oh, and some broccoli for mom.

(What kid asks for FRUIT for Christmas? Mine.)

5) Cookie Shaped like a train

(That sounds more normal, but very specific.)

6) Chocolate with mint inside

(Are you noticing a food trend here?)

7) Santa Doll that talks

(Sounds creepy to me, I think Santa will forget that one)

8) Santa Buddies Movie

(got it!)

9) Blue Butterfly Wings

(Odd request. She has lots of wings and they end up on the floor, torn, or on her stuffed animals. I’m still considering)

10) Hot Wheels- must have a loop di loop

(what’s Hot Wheels without a loop di loop, right?)

Have you written a Santa Letter yet?

Hairstyles for a Princess

Last week I bought a book from blogger Kori at Hairstyles for Girls (The story of a Princess and her hair). That’s “bought” as in paid for and no disclosure needed. LOL!

If you have never been to her blog, you are totally missing out and you must go. Kori has long been one of my favorite bloggers as her very niche area showcases some amazing hairstyles for girls. She creates them along with instructions and pictures of her (very patient) daughter modeling them. It’s all around a very fun site.

Charlotte has extremely long hair and as a child of almost 5, she isn’t the best at wanting to sit there to get it done. As soon as I bought this book and she got to see all the pretty hairstyles modeled by Kori’s daughter, she was all about it! I had fully intended on making this a Christmas present, but I could not resist starting early.

This week it has been heaven keeping her hair pulled back. I am not nearly as good as Kori and I can’t even french braid.  In fact, I still need classes on how to create the parts as perfect as she gets them. But we went out and bought a few bags of the mini hair bands, bobby pins, and butterfly clips and I have faith I am going to master some of these styles.

I wanted to share an adapted style I did from her book this evening before Charlotte went to bed. Check out Charlotte rocking this look:

I asked Kori if I could share her post on her new book and she said yep, so here is the information if you are interested in checking it out.

—————————————————————————–

The Princess and I chose 15 of our favorite hairstyles from the blog, and 1 more hairstyle we love that hasn’t been posted. So, 16 total hairdos. The book is 8 1/2″x 11″ and 66 pages long (all in color on quality paper.) Of course I included step by step pictures and written instructions for each hairstyle (just like the blog.) We also made sure to pick out a binding that can lay flat on the counter so that the pages aren’t giving you trouble while you’re trying to do hair.

This would make a nice Christmas gift for a princess! I did my best to keep the costs down so that anyone who wants a book will be able to afford it. :) From now until Christmas, these books will be on sale for only $16.99. If you want more than one book, I will combine the shipping to save you shipping costs as well.

I’ve had a few people ask about shipping internationally. I would be happy to, but the shipping costs may be a little more. If you are interested in purchasing and you don’t live in the U.S. or Canada, email me your address and I can send you a price for shipping. I will ship to Canada for the price listed. Thanks! hair4myprincess at yahoo dot com.

P.S. I think its so cool she made an actual book from her blog!!

Charlottes Christmas List (well, part of it)

In reality, this article could be summed up easily with one line: “all toys”. Charlotte’s at the age where every single commercial has her begging for whatever they are advertising.

  • “I want that!”
  • “Ooh, look at that!”
  • “Mommy, you’re not looking!!”

She has no discrimination on boy toys, girl toys, toys for teens- if it has a flashy commercial, she “wants that”. And the power of marketing, oh my word, this girl can spot an item that she saw on a commercial one mile away and give me the tag line from it.

“Save 15% or more with 15 minutes with Geicko”

In no particular order, these are some of the toys we have narrowed it down barbieto:

1) Holiday Barbie: Who doesn’t want Holiday Barbie? She is gorgeous, collectible, playable, come on, it’s barbie!

When I was little, I loaned all my barbies to some skank down the street that returned them with their heads broken off. I hope she fell down and skinned her knees a lot as a child.

2) pollypocketPolly Pocket Roller Coaster: This was something that we actually already gave to Charlotte. She had pink eye and was home for about 5 days straight and out of utter boredom, we opened it up and the first day we had it, she stayed on that toy for at least 6 full hours.

It has lost its immediate luster from that moment, but is still used and is a pretty fun toy.

I like how it has a lot of manual parts and isn’t all automated, but I have to say that putting it together was a bit like rocket science. It was also a tad unsturdy. A little hot glue would help and overall a toy I think worth picking up. I still haven’t figured out how to empty the pool without taking it halfway apart though. I think Mattel should include some sort of drain next time so it doesn’t get all moldy and icky.

3) Barbie Dream House: We need another dollhouse around here like I need dreamhouseanother coffee, but this one is super cute and it has an elevator. Plus, its pink. And has an elevator.

What house is complete without an elevator?

Come to think of it, have you ever even known someone with an elevator? Maybe that’s why its so darn cool.

4) Barbie Shower and Show: Charlotte is really into horses. She has a horse collection of big, small, life size and miniature. That girl loves her some horses. We actually have someone a few streets over that has mini horses in their front yard. Its the funniest thing when you drive by.

This horse looks fun because it includes a little bathtub to wash your horse (hygiene is always a good point, right?) and then accessories to get your horse ready for the horse show.

5) Super Jump Raceway: I know I am not the only parent with a little girl that hot_wheelsloves cars! I wish they made  pink and teal hot wheels tracks though.

Charlotte has a massive car collection and for about a year we spent more money on Hot Wheels and cars then we did on any other type of toys. This one looks like a blast and something that dad can really get into.

6) D-Rex: Interactive Dynosaur that learns to love you. Need I say much more?drex

Toy description says: What kid wouldn’t want their very own dinosaur? D-Rex™ combines robotics, sensors, and reptilian-like skin for ultra-lifelike appearance and behavior. An interactive pet with an independent “personality,” D-Rex™ walks, roars, and makes funny noises to let you know what he wants, including feeding and petting.

Hmm, I want one too! And you dont have to take it outside to do its business. Perfect pet.

7) Little Mommy Walk and Giggle Doll: This may work temporarily for getting walkandgigledollCharlotte off my back on creating another rug rat around here. This doll is actually pretty inventive. It sits, stands, and walks and as long as we keep it from going Chuckie on us, it should be a pretty entertaining toy.
When I was little, the best you could hope for was a doll that peed in the pretend toilet. And you had to squeeze her to make it happen. Toys have come a long way. You almost don’t even need additional kids in the house with all this technology.
Plus, I’m not sure I could play with one more weeble wobble, so here is to hoping!
8) Uno Moo Preschool Name: Uno is in my top 3 favorite games to play so when I saw this one come out, I was excited. A great way to rope Charlotte in on a preschool level! uno
Toy description says: Gotta get the critters back in the barn! Round ‘em up by matching colors or animals. Is there a blue pig on the roof? Pair it with any blue animal or any color pig. Or use a farmer figure — he’s wild and matches anything. The first player to get all their figures back in the barn wins the game!

I just think it looks ultra adorable and easy to understand.
What’s on your childs list this year for Christmas?
