So the modeling contest crap got me out of blogging for about 30 days…and my little memory meme is all shot to pieces. Ill just pick up with my apologies.
I’m sure you missed the gobs of photos I was going to inundate you with.
Right? Right.
Two weeks ago on FNL we were talking about growing up and our parents rules and we led into the first car we ever owned (See what happens when you miss FNL?). I was saying how my first car cost $500 and my dad used to make me go out and wash and wax it every freaking Saturday morning so I could learn the “value” of a vehicle.
While all the kids in my beach town drove BMWs and Mercedes, I got this little beauty.
And I was grateful.
1978 Chevy Chevette
(if you are wondering about all the crap in the background, that house there on the stilts? That’s cause the gulf of mexico is in front of it. I lived on an island… Hurricanes..)
No power steering, hatchback, and PAID OFF.
I loved this car.
It lasted all through high school and then my dad sold it to another poor teenage sucker and she had it through her high school. I got sent to college with out a car the first year.
My dad wanted me to study.
Is that what college was for?

PS what was your first car?

1970 Ford Maverick. $800 in the year 2000. So, needless to say, it was a beauty. But man, did I think I was cool!
My first? A mini van! Of course it was a necessity because of the wheelchair ramp, but just how cool is that? When you have a handful of kids, maybe but when you’re 16 no thanks. They didnt’ want me to have to try to handle a car and all that good stuff that I would have had to struggle with and learn how to do but it still sucked. Big time. But like you I was grateful and never put any thought into being cool. I’d never cared before and even fi had no friends I still for the 1st time ever had some independence and could get away from my parents
and little brother. And I wish i still had it because it was paid for, and the one I have now is NOT. And I’m broke lol so the lesson here? I’m grateful for what I have and don’t want anything that gets me more bills!
I REMEMBER THAT CAR!! LOL Mine was a 1990 Pontiac Bonneville – white with cranberry colored interior. No tape deck, only the radio but the speakers were INCREDIBLE. Many – a – memories in that old Pontiac! LOL
I really enjoy this series and hope you’ll post more often! It’s like looking through a friends photo album!
Oh whoops, forgot to answer what my first car was. It was a green Ford Explorer. And I remember paying to put in a CD console in it and then my dad up and sold it WITH the CD console. I was so mad! lol
Oh Trisha, I remember this car!!!! *sigh* Memories! I remember being so excited to have a friend that owned a car (and that was a girl – because you know how my dad was….) You know, that car suited you – it WAS perfect. All it needed was a little TLC and some Madonna blaring on the radio!
1972 bug – man, I loved that car, even thought the STEERING WHEEL CAME OFF IN MY HANDS while I was driving – luckily we were on a country road & I just went into a ditch. My dad was with me (teaching me to drive a stick) and he said he will NEVER forget the look on my face because I was like – is this SUPPOSED to happen? After it was fixed, I loved that car – even though I could have no backseat passengers because the back seat floor board was rusted out!!! It was $1000 in 1988 …. ah, memories
My first car was a 1981 VW Rabbit – it was a lot like your car. I still miss it all the time. Granted it was 1989 when I got it, but I had to take care of that car just like you did.
My first car was a Chevy Nova. Lol! Made in the late 80′s. It was awful, but better than nothing. I was just grateful that I had something!
My first car was a 1993 Subaru Impreza that I paid for myself with a nice down payment from working and a car loan that lasted a few years. I STILL have that car. My husband likes to drive it to work. (And yes, we have 3 vehicles…)
You know my BFFs mom had one of those and me, her brother and her all got locked in the back of it. We freaked out!!! It was so tiny and hot. Luckily I was small enough to slither through the seats and the ‘trunk’ and pull the latch so we could climb out. It was scary!
My first car was a 1992 Ford Tempo 2 door. It was my sisters first car which then turned into my first car, which then turned into my hubands car when I got pregnant with our oldest and couldn’t reach the clutch. lol It’s actually still sitting in our driveway so I can sell it for parts on Craigslist this week and since we finally got a new one. lol
My first car was a 1983 Ford Escort. Maroon, hatchback, and a 4 speed LOL
Well, looks like we were in about the same boat lol. My first was a 1985 Buick Skylark…that I bought for $100…and my parents helped me pay for a new engine in it…yep…it was a mini-hooptie.
P.S. My video and pics are up. ;-P
My first car was a 94 Ford Tempo.
My first care was a 1988 Volkswagen Jetta that started breaking as soon as I bought it.
My first car was a 1992 Ford Tempo gawd was that thing such a granny car, but I was happy to just have a car at all.
I think mine was a 4-door Honda Civic. They weren’t that expensive back then. I think it was a 1987 model. It was passed down to me from my parents. It was very low to the ground and I remember getting stuck in the snow a lot and scraping the bottom going up and down the driveway and over speed bumps.
I was passed down my grandmothers HUGE 1983 Buick Stationwagon (I think it was called a Roadmaster!). It was blue with the faux wood side paneling! I just cried & cried about it when I found out that it was coming my way. Those tears dried up quickly though on my 16th birthday when I drove away – all. by. myself. FREEDOM! Not to mention the number of friends I could fit into that thing (back in the day before the laws limited those things)!
My boyfriend had a 2 door Silver Chevette & at the end of our Senior year we were running some errands around town & came to a stop light. He put it in neutral and put his foot down on the floor board & his foot WENT THROUGH THE FLOOR! I will NEVER forget that! We died laughing!
Fun post
One of my best friend sdrove one of those. We used to jump up and down in the back to make the car bounne as we crossed the bay bridge. That car was pimp!
Man, I need to see if my parents have a picture of my first car. Like I said on FNL it was a powder blue 1978 (I think) 2-door Chevy Malibu. It was a pretty cool car actually.
I wish I still had it. My 2005 Buick that I bought new is possessed and always has something wrong.
My Malibu never let me down…
