CPSIA Insults Mommy Bloggers

finger

Last night while on twitter, @thesmartmama twittered out a video from the commissions village idiot spokesperson Julie Vallese from the CPSIA. If you can get through this totally cringe worthy, nonclarifying  video long enough to see her blame the misinformation of the law on mommy bloggers, you will see that the CPSIA are basically hall monitors that are excited to be passing out detention slips, but having very little real knowledge of their own law, how to enforce it, or even where they will get the resources to do so. I was so insulted by the condescending attitude and little smirk that was on this ladies face at times, that I wanted to reach through the computer and pull a Pumpkin from Flava Flav move.

Julie, the reason us mommy bloggers have to talk about the law, is because your idiotic council got a hard little erection at the thought of passing a law and rather then doing the research and enacting something that was going to help our country be safe from lead based toys from China, created an umbrella law that doesnt allow me to purchase hairbows for my daughter anymore.

Go suck on an egg.

  1. Kathryn L says:

You told her to go suck an egg —

Yeah, a LEAD (600 parts per million) egg, and whether she actually sucks it or not, she should “use her best judgement.” :)

  2. One angry “mommy blogger” here. Thanks for spreading the word and flipping her the hidden bird.

  3. I have to say she tried really hard to sound educated on the subject but I must at admit her long pauses and her repetition of the questions asked only made her look foolish. Also at the beginning it looked as though she was reading a card and kept messing up. I am high offended and I agree with you on the picture. I am glad all of these bloggers have been commenting on this post it shows we have a strong community of bloggers that stand by one another.

  4. This was the best video against the CPSIA I’ve watched yet! Way to go!
I’m a mom but it’s our 13-year-old son who has a home business making pencil toppers for kids. He’s been doing it for three years & has become quite successful. Even though he doesn’t have to make a living with his business yet, it’s a really bad message our government is sending to young entrepreneurs of America. He’s a sensitive kid but pretty business savvy so we’re all in this together!
They can’t possibly leave the law the way it’s written. There are so many people making noise, they can’t just tune us out.

  5. THANK YOU! I’m proud to be one of the Mommy Bloggers who has been spreading Information about this ever since hearing about it last month. i read your post and just kept nodding my head, yup! You go, girl!

    GRRRRRRRRR!

    Thank you Trisha!

  9. I love you!!
This post is by far the most perfect I’ve read regarding this blindingly stupid video.
I would not change a single word and it sums up exactly what me an a lot of other people are thinking!!!
The icing on the cake is “go suck on an egg”…..amen.
    You rock!

  10. THANK YOU for posting this!!! I have shared it with everyone and I keep tweeting this. That woman from the CPSIA should be flogged!

  12. I think Julie was the same person who alluded to the fact that handmade artisans and crafters shouldn’t be upset because manufacturers had a voice in the initial discussions. I think what she meant to say was “large-scale corporations who donate millions of dollars to political campaigns had a say in the original bill, small businesses and work-at-home mothers are truly inconsequential to the actual functioning of government… so we really didn’t care about them.”

Ah well, I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude. I’ve written my Senators and Representative twice each and received back one form letter. I’ve contacted all the local news media to drum up interest, but apparently they’re still too focused on whether or not Casey Anthony had donuts for breakfast in jail. I voted on Change.org, so we’ll see if I have to shut down my shop.

I do know one thing, though, if there aren’t any changes to the CPSIA there will be a ridiculous sale in my shop starting February 3rd. When I say ridiculous, I mean below-cost-of-fabric ridiculous.

  13. I’m so angry I don’t even know where to start.

I found a wonderful sweet lady that was going to knit me a beautiful sweater for my nephew and now I can’t but it because of the stupid law and even worse this was her dream was to knit clothes for young children and now her dream is no more.

I bought some hair bows about 3 weeks ago before either one of us knew about the law and if they get turned back at the border I’m not even going to talk about how I’ll feel then.

  15. Oh my gosh! Who are these people!? Let’s get them out!!!! My goodness, destroying lives all over the place, man I hate ‘em! I happen to be one of those moms who owns a thriving hairbow business. Soon it will be shut down and my struggling family will be struggling further. JERKS! I have zero eloquent thoughts on this subject any more and way too much anger and bitterness. What are things coming to!? I love your post and your video was great! YOU should have an interview with those people, maybe then we’ll get our questions (which they refuse to address) answered!!!

  17. OH – everyone, if you have a biz or a boutique, please do the survey by Kathleen from Fashion Incubator – its in the momdot forums under Boutiques. It will help her get data to give to CPSC about the number of businesses affected and how much money will be lost, eetc…

  18. Trisha, thank you for doing this!! SHe’s just like any politician in D.C….mouth moving but not alot coming out. I spoke with another mom-preneur who’s Native Am. and she brought up another whole industry about to go out…Native Americans who make and sell beaded jewelry & lots of other beaded, weaved items. What are they to do?

I wish the reporter had questioned Julie harder – she was very soft with her.

  20. Loved your video, Trisha. I want to post a letter I received today from Congressman Devin Nunes, 21st District, California, US House of Represenatives: “Thank you for taking the time to email me to express your concerns with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, and its implementation. I welcome the opportunity to respond. Let me begin by saying I understand your concerns with the unintended consequences with the passage of this legislation. Led by Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat Congress, this bill was an overreaction to certain stories in the media and was rushed through Congress with minimal deliberation. Unfortunately, many times government overacts and ends up creating a bigger mess than what it was originally trying to solve. As you may know, recently the 111th Congress convened and the new legislative year is underway; and major change in the law would require legislative action. Rest assured, I will work with my colleagues in Congress and make sure they are made aware of your concern and see if we can reach an agreeable legislative fix. Again, thanks for taking the time to email me. Please take a moment and visit my website at http://www.nunes.house.gov for an update on my work in Congress. Sincerely…”

Says a lot without saying much, but at least he noted my concerns. So, PLEASE write to your Congressman, Senators and Representatives (like I did)as every letter/email helps.

  24. This has me all fired up, too. When I talk to people outside the blogging world, or even bloggers, they have NO idea this has happened. How could that be? Why is this being ignored by the news? The only media that has picked up on it is talk radio. Other “articles” barely touch on what this really is and what is really going to happen.

I am going to be put out of business, at least the hairbow part, but I have $200 in inventory that is not going to be used. Or my dd is going to have a TON of hairbows, lol.

I can’t afford to go to work full time. Not that there is a job available. My mom has been looking for work for a year and can’t find a good full time job, and she is extremely qualified. My husband, an expert in his field, hasn’t gotten a job offer that we can live on in 9 weeks. With all these people who are going to lose their income with no way to continue in that field out there searching for jobs, there will be NOTHING to find.

Moms can’t afford to work, can’t afford to make money from home, can’t afford to stay home, can’t find a job anyway………… Congress is not going to be able to handle the aftermath of this fiasco.

  30. DJ is totally right! I had the same thought last night! Even without any preamble from the interviewer, etc, Julie comes off uninformed and uncertain about the very thing she is supposed to be touting! I’m BEYOND insulted by the whole “mommy blog” term too. Maybe Julie is not a mother? But I consider myself a professional and small business owner, who just happens to be a mom and a blogger. I make my own money, run this whole show by myself, pay taxes and contribute to society in general and then she wants to come along and DISMISS me (and THOUSANDS of other small biz owners, moms, dads, grandparents, etc) as a “mommy blogger” like my RIGHTS to run a business and not be SCREWED by my own gov’t are somehow SECONDARY to my mom status.
Ms Vallese-I’m sorry your bosses are Congressional trolls and lackeys willing to take kickbacks and payoffs from special interest groups, but you sold your soul to the dark side with this interview. I hope your successor is at least a better spin doctor than you.

It doesn’t matter if the materials have been tested first. The final product still has to be tested as a whole. Dumb huh!

  33. @ Shannon:
wrong. Every product has to be tested by the MANUFACTORER…not the supplier. You cannot use your suppliers testing. So yes, even hairbows, are OUT.

  34. Ok, so question. Is ribbon not tested before it’s sold? To me it seems like when the moms buy the ribbon from Wal-Mart or wherever it will be tested. Wrong?

  37. No no, you all have it all wrong. Trust me. Here’s my analysis: http://bit.ly/CcXd

  38. I think it’s so dumb! This lady defined resellers as people selling USED items, like thrift stores. But retailers don’t fall under resellers. So what? Should we make something, let our kids play with it for 5 minutes, and then call it used? Maybe that’s what I’d going to do. I’ll make my nursing covers. Wear them around the house for 5 minutes, and call them used. Then I don’t have to test them, because I know what I’m selling is safe.

  41. You tell them Trisha! I sent this to my 2 local besties & tweeted it. This is so unfair and it’s not like going out to get a job is that easy or affordable. I can’t do it. The cost to send my one teenager even to PS + sending my 3yo triplets to daycare would far out way any paycheck I could ever earn. Besides jobs aren’t that easy to come by anymore. One of my good friends has a husband that has been out of work for at least a month or two and he has put in applications everywhere. Even McDonald’s! What’s going to happen when all these precious WAHM have to afford daycare + go out and look for a job. Mass Chaos! That’s what. This new law has got my ruffles feathered. I usually stay to myself, don’t involve myself with politics or whatever but this is just wrong. I just don’t get it. I’m praying for some divine intervention because I can’t imagine not being allowed to buy adorable handmade dresses & bows for my baby girl.

    Anyhoo, thanks for sharing!
    Praying the leaders are listening!

  42. Well, I guess there is a “closed door” meeting that they are going to have so, hopefully they come out with some GOOD NEWS because it just breaks my heart how many mamas work from home and make a decent living and now are threatened with having to find a job outside the home.
