With pretty much everyone online at multiple poitns during the day, its no wonder that Cyber crimes have been reported to be more than 3 times higher than offline crimes. And why not? The fact is we are so comfortable with our electronics and feel such a false sense of safety that they are “ours” that people are often careless with them.
Simply signing online in an unsecured location (local restaurant, baseball game, theme park) puts you at a huge risk. And like the case of Miss Teen USA whom was targeted by a hacker that simply took control of her webcam to take private pictures of her without her knowledge, you could also be a victim and not know it till it was too late.
The news reports:
A 19-year-old man has appeared in court charged with hacking into the computers of Miss Teen USA and other women to extort nude photos and videos from them. Jared Abrahams is said to have taken control of up to 150 “slave” machines from his home in California leering at girls through their webcams. He would then take naked pictures of his victims as they got undressed and later use them to blackmail them. According to court papers when the computer geek admitted what he’d done in June, he said he had 30 to 40 “slave computers” – or other people’s electronic devices he controlled – and had had as many as 150 in total.
