I went to the dentist today. Fun. Fun.

[private]

dentistI avoid the dentist like the plague, but at the same time, it envelopes my thoughts so much that the guilt invades atleast 5 out of 7 of my weekly dreams. Today was my first dentist appt in 3 years.

I know, I know, spare me the lecture. I already feel badly enough.

I envisioned 15 cavities, 2 root canals, and dont get me started on the cosmetic portion of what I want done.

I didn’t even book a cleaning, just a consultation, because I figured I would have so much work that a cleaning would be too painful. The dentist said that it wasnt as bad as in my head. Most of the cavity issues I have are actually old fillings that are getting cavities around the edges and they need to basically redo the fillings. They also had an appt cancel so they put me right in for a cleaning and Xrays while I was there.

Cleanings suck as much as I remember them to suck. I HATE when they polish your teeth. It freaking hurts!

I had no idea when I booked this dentist, but he is one of the leading cosmetic dentists in the area. I went to him on a referral from a woman who works at Charlotte’s gymnastics, so I didn’t know that when I signed up there.

I call it fate.

I have wanted pretty white front teeth for a long time. My teeth are just not even or perfectly white. Its the one thing that completely drives me nuts about myself and hurts my self confidence. Not my little boobs, not my extra 5 pounds, not my 5 foot height, just my teeth. Chris and Charlotte both have naturally beautiful, perfect teeth. I am the odd woman out in our family.

I have always wanted veneers but the dentist put a no on that due to how my teeth are, but he did say I can get veneer crowns that go around my teeth and that I only need 4, not the standard 6-8. Considering they are $795 a piece, that’s a major cost difference.

We set the plan up to get my regular dental work done (next thursday, woo hoo, i love getting my teeth drilled..maybe Ill come home and VLOG with Novocaine in my mouth), then I am going to get bleaching, and then finish up with the crowns on the front.

Perfection coming soon to a Trisha near you!

I called Alica and told her before I went in I was guessing my bill to today around the $10,000 mark. It was actually, worse case scenario, only $4000 including cosmetic and regular dental work. Its a LOT, don’t get me wrong, but its a lot better then driving a car payment in my mouth!

However, I did have to go on prescription toothpaste and the dentist is making me get an electric toothbrush (sigh, i hate them), but all in all, I am glad I got it over with and looking forward to the results.

How long has it been since you have been to the dentist?

  1. I’m going to the dentist next weeek for a cleaning and hopefully just the one cavity we already know about. My insurance (50% only) runs out soon now that I’m no longer in college so I have to start taking better care of them. I already have so many cavities. I’d love to get them professionally whitened one day.

I think its been 2 or 3 years actually.
The last time the dentist didn’t tell us my sister was allergic to the laughing gas and gave it to her anyway.
When my mum found out, she was furious.
Ontop of everything else he likes to push things on us.
Now that we know whats what, he seems more beligerant about everything.
So needless to say were looking for another dentist!

I am in the same boat. I went a few months ago, the first time in years. I was immediately scheduled for a root canal. I have had two more appointments since then. She is basically repairing old work and doing some fillings. Next, I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled…yikes!

I went to the dentist last week. The worst part was I still had glue on my teeth from my braces. Like you my teeth are my downfall. They’re pretty and straight now, but I’d like to get them whitened. It only cost a small fortune, but I was secretly happy that it was medically necessary for me to get my teeth fixed. I had such a bad malocclusion that I had TMJ and it was contributing got my migraines.

  5. I was pregnant with Rowan the last time I went…so that’s about 5 years…I want veneers, too, but they are way out of my price range and insurance doesn’t cover it. Oh, well, someday…

OMG! I went to the dentist 2 months ago..I hadn’t been in hmmm oh let’s say 12 YEARS! I was prepared for the worst as you can imagine. 2 months, 14 cavities, 1 root canal, 1 Cleaning and $2000 later I’m a new woman with a rockin mouth and ready for invisalign in a few months…So dont’ feel bad..I’m pretty sure nobody can top that! ;)

  7. Elizabeth says:

I went a couple times in the past six months b/c I needed a cavity filled. I was pregnant, though, and couldn’t get an x-ray. Now I need to go back so they can see if I need a root canal. :(

  8. Wow…sounds exciting to me. I’ve never minded the dental work…just the cost of it all.

Let’s see…I haven’t been to the dentist since my braces came off in 2005.

Haley, DSS, and DH all just went this year. Haley is due again in June. After that…I think I’m finally next. I really need to get a new retainer. My top teeth have shifted some and I need to get them back in check.

    Good luck with it all!!

  9. Coming from someone with far worse dental problems and severe phobia, I’m really proud of you for going in there Trisha. And I’m really happy to hear the bill wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be. My bill always comes out 3 times worse than I envisioned.

  10. Cheryl says:

I actually go pretty regularly, only because I JUST finished with braces and had a few cavities after my braces came off (never having cavities before, I was pretty P.O’d. ;) ) Good on you for going to the dentist, hon!! Good luck next Thursday!!

I hate the dentist! I only go when I am in serious pain!

  12. Tricia says:

Eeeek! I just went earlier this yr. I used to wait oh about 5 or 6 yrs or until’ I was in horrible pain. I finally found a dentist to treat me like the big baby I am. So I visit regularly.

Hope your visits are quick and not painful.

where’s that blog linky post am I missing it??

  13. Jen says:

I think I dread the dentist more than you do. Let’s just say my last cleaning was as a sophomore in high school. And… I’m 26 now. It’s disgusting, I know but I refuse to go. It invades my dreams too. I have nightmares that they all start wiggling and falling out one by one. As jealous as I am that you got your visit out of the way, I am not so jealous that I’m going too.
