Holy cow! That is crazy. I'm glad that nobody got hurt. Thanks for the good tips and reminders. It wasn't until after Morgan was born that we finally got an extinguisher and a fire ladder for the upstairs. Funny how you don't do things to take care of yourself, but to take care of your kids.

omg you must be my fire twin! the exact thing happened to me about 4 years ago. i was going to fry some french fries and left the pan with oil in it to heat up. i left the kitchen for maybe 2 minutes (yeah, i couldn't get my eyes off What Not To wear on TV) and later saw a BRIGHT yellow glow coming from the kitchen. i ran and froze when i got there...the fire had engulfed the entire stove, the range hood and was burning my kitchen cabinets. i SCREAMED so loud that my neighbours thought i was being attacked or something. they quickly called 911 for me (bless them!) and i screamed for everyone to get out of the house. everyone was home that day, as unfortunate as that may sound, but my mother was the only one who was able to put the fire out before the firefighters got home. the firefighters said our entire house would've burned down had she not put the fire out herself. once the flames enter the piping inside the range hood, it goes all through the house. anyway, my entire house was covered in soot, we had to throw out a lot of our things and bro and mom had to be treated for smoke inhalation. :-( it was not a good day for me and i blamed myself for months and months. we had insurance but our insurance company were idiots about it (like any insurance company) and only reimbursed us about 80% of the loss we suffered. either way, it was a good lesson to learn. NEVER EVER leave the stove unattended and always keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen.

Omgosh! That is really scary! I personally have never started a fire, but I do recall when I was 5 years old, my mother wanted to surprise my father with a steak dinner.. she went out back to the old charcol grill and proceded to get it going... she thought my father used GAS(!!!!!) so she did the same.... omgosh, my brother and I were in the house watching while she did this (thank goodness) because within seconds, my whole back yard was on fire!!!!! It was very scary!

oh the irony, I have covered the pan before only to have my husband yell at me (hes more expereinced than i am in the kitchen)
Im glad no one was hurt! I dont know what i would do if that happened to me... I really think we should ge t a fire extinguisher after reading this, i have days where im cooking then my kids will be crying so ill go check up on them leaving the stove on with my pan heating up or food cooking for a minute or 2, luckily a fire never broke out! i wont do that again!

Is it okay to ask what recipe were u going to make when this happened, i see a potato(i think) and pam.

That's a good reminder and lesson for everyone, I'm just sorry it had to be at your expense. And it's also a great reminder to buy a fire extinguisher, which we don't currently have.

On a side note, I'm getting you a grease splatter screen for Christmas. :)
