I have always made it clear to my doctor(s) that I do not enjoy the pap smear and/or cervical exam but that I want it done every year so any early signs can be detected. I always have a nurse in the examining room with me for added comfort. Believe me, it's no worse than your prenatal exams. I just grin and bear it because I know I need to take careful care of my health. I have the pap/cervical exam annually, along with a Mammogram (now talk about uncomfortable!) So if I can have my breasts squeezed to the size of thin pancakes for a mammogram, you can get your gyn exams! Besides, don't you use the same doctor you used for all of your prenatal and delivery? I thank Fran for all she does to shine a light on women's health issues. And Trish... I absolutely hate going to doctors, especially the gynie, so I do understand how you feel, but you owe it to yourself and your family (really not preaching) to go.
