This season with a bundle of new toys hitting the market, you will no doubt be checking out the best ones to purchase and put under your tree (or however you celebrate) this holiday season.
When I first was approached by the rep for the Girl Gourmet Cake Bakery, I have to tell you I was excited. I had seen this on a commercial and it WAS on my list of potential purchases. Charlotte and I love both crafts and baking and this seemed liked a perfect rendition of them both as one.
Plus, as a massive fan of Ace of Cakes and reading that he said “ I told them that you are not putting my face until I play with it and it has to be quality and good and exciting for the kids… You have to understand your craft, and little kids are going to understand that you have to get Craft right before Art” I felt like it was a product that would certainly live up to its advertising.
Right?
After it arrived, we took 20 minutes to get it unscrewed, untaped, and the batteries put in. Then we were ready to go. Charlotte was sitting there pretty patient the whole time just waiting.
Any kid will wait long enough if cake is involved, right?

- After all pieces were out and assembled, we mixed our cake and put in microwave.
- There really isn’t a lot of batter in the little mixes.
- You have to literally spatula that out to get EVERY drop.

- Roll out and create your Fondant.
- This did not go so well.
- It was too dry, so we added a tiny amount of water as directed, then it got too sticky. It stuck really badly to the sheet and the roller.
- Finding the perfect balance was pretty much like Rocket Science.
- We gave up on the roller it came with and used our hands.
- That didn’t go much better.

- The cake came out of the microwave and we had to figure out how to get the Fondant on the cake.
- I was starting to realize that it was going to look NOTHING like the picture on the box.
- As you can see the little cake wasn’t even even on all sides. I used every bit of cake batter they provided.
- Its just so minuscule that it doesn’t bake into much more then a spongy, misshapen mess.

- I got the cake covered with the fondant-sorta.
- Then let Charlotte “decorate”.

- Taste test by Charlotte.
- Yes, frosting is good.

- Adding sprinkles.

- Finished product

- Comparison on how we did.

That’s good to know. I don’t have the patience for something that complicated and it’s just the kind of thing my daughter would ask for. Definitely won’t be buying it.
lol wow looks like something I would have gotten my nieces for Christmas, thanks for showing us reality!
Taylor has been begging for one. Not too sure if I should spend the money on it though…
We bought the cookie decorator from this same company and it didn’t go much better. We were disappointed. It’s only been used once. I can send it to you if you’d like to try it too.
ahhh whoopsie!
Sure does “look” tasty sweetie (gulp!)
I have grandson, and they love to help momma cook & bake! So I am glad to hear that this is a not do for them ( plus they are under 5)
Thanks
Oh and your pictures were awesome.
How do you write an “I didn’t love this” review but somehow make it not sound so negative? You’re good.
What a great review! I think that people who buys those are looking for the fun experience and not perfection… hopefully. lol Guess they (the company) have to tout it being so easy and then coming out with these perfect cakes or no one would buy it.
In the end, it’s just another toy that kids are going to look at and say, “I want that, mommy!” – lol. In this case, it was you who wanted it though, right?
You guys had fun and I thought your cake was super cute! And I’ll bet Charlotte loved it.
Thanks so much for letting us know Trisha! I hate when they show something and it leaves your kiddos “expecting” the same result and it ends up in shambles.
Kasandria
Uhm -yeah. Your cake doesn’t QUITE look the same
I hadn’t even heard about this, probably because I don’t have a little girl. Good review.
Well that sucks! My oldest has been begging for one of these every time we go to the store and she holds me hostage in the toy isle. *sigh*
Am I sick because I still totally want to try it? This was an awesome review though!
Lee
lol! No, not at all! Your experience may be totally different than mine.
That stinks it didn’t work like it claimed to. I never had an easy bake oven. Santa just brought me a bunch of Jiffy Mixes and Jiffy icings and I used the real oven with my moms help. I love Ace of Cakes too. I am really surprised Duff would promote a product that is nothing like what it claims.
How sad! I bought my daughter the Girl Gourmet cupcake maker for her birthday, and our experience with it seems to be much better than your experience, but it was still sub-par. I was so excited, and then so let down.
I now get what you were talking about! I’m glad you did this. My daughter’s birfday is in Dec & she says she wants this every time it comes on tv. (Her Easy Bake Oven is enough of a pain in ass~we can stick w/that!) Thank you!
We bought the cupcake baker for our niece. One cupcake made and the whole thing went in the trash. I didn’t even have the heart to freecycle it. Sorry this didn’t go well for you either.
Ah, Thanks so much for posting this. I can mark this one off of the list.
See, this is what WE NEED TO READ! Especially if we are the ones shelling out $$$ for these toys/products.
Love your pictures though…
Bummer – does sound like it could be great. What I wish is that companies would market these sort of things for boys. Why is it that cooking and stuff like this product or the Easy Bake Oven is still marketed for girls? I have two boys – one five and the other 1 yr. My five year old loves to be in the kitchen, cooking, baking you name it. I’m sure he’d love something like this – if it to quote = “Wasn’t for girls.”
My daughter saw that and has been wanting it really bad!! I’m not so sure I want to deal with all that mess though. I’m thinking maybe I’ll get her an easy bake oven instead. Do they still sell those? I LOVED mine. Those pink cookies were YUMMY.
I too appreciate this review! My girls both want this and I have been going back and forth over whether I want them to have something so messy (in other words something I will have to clean up). You really helped me make up my mind about this one!
Thanks!
Yikes!
Thanks for the honest review. I’m sure this is something my 10yo would’ve had on her list.
How disappointing! I have a friendcrush on Duff and am sad that he would endorse something that disappoints like this product.
My kids are happy enough to spoon pre-made cookie dough onto a cookie sheet or stir the cake batter of a boxed mix. This looks like a lot of work for an ugly-looking “cake”.
Thank you for your honest review. I appreciate your being so candid. I won’t be buying this for my 3 little girls!
That definitely looked disappointing. I havent seen a commercial on this or anything (I watch Nick JR all day lol) but that did seem pretty weak.
I’m even more disappointed with Duff!
And I like Duff
Disappointing product.
Wow. That is such a shame. It looked like a lot of fun too.
Thank you for your very honest review. I appreciate it very much.
I am a HUGE fan of Ace of Cakes, but I think I’ll skip on this toy.
Maybe with honest opinions like yours the company will “tweak” it to make it a bit better.
So sad. I am a huge Ace fan myself (from Baltimore) and I am wondering why he lent himself to this product. That stinks. Thanks for the honesty!
Wow, that looks absolutely horrible! I had been looking at this product for a little while now, having seen it on other blogs and was thinking of picking it up for my stepdaughters who are 4 and 5. Not anymore! Thanks so providing such a great and most of all honest review of a product that looks so appealing but turns out to be a big mess.
As someone who has dabbled a time or two with fondant (with my husband, too, who’s learning himself), this is NOT something I personally would’ve ever imagined involving a child in with its level of difficulty. This isn’t playdoh, this is icing that needs the perfect mix of water or, as you found out, it gets too dry or too gummy, and if your child is expecting cute cookie cutter shapes to put on, it’ll be disappointing to not have it that way. Fondant is not easy at all.
With our family, we don’t use artificial food coloring, so what you see with our cake is mashed strawberries and lemon juice & rind to “color” my fondant (which came out even cooler, since it was a Flash birthday cake, the rind made it look even more electric. You can see it was didn’t come out the greatest there, either, and we’re obviously not children.
Did you not get more than one cake mix to try? That’s another FAIL on the company’s part – they shouldn’t just include ONE mix, if you flub, you’re stuck? *shakes head*
They did include an extra box of different flavored cake mix, but to be honest, I was so tired by the 30 minute ordeal of MESS, that i packed it up in a box and put it in the top of charlottes closet already.
We got the cupcake maker for my daughter last year for her 8th birthday. It’s been in the top of her closet since LOL. It was fun and all and none of my kids’ minded the taste (I thought they were icky) but it was a messy annoying experience. I’m with you – the old fashion way = much much better.
