Happy Anniversary to ME!

Its so wierd when you are with someone your whole life. People ask you…how long have you been together? You run through “well, 8 years married, but we started dating about 16 yrs old in high school and have been together for 15 years now.”

Basically, forever. My whole life, even as a teenager, I have been hanging out with this idiot. Who has great teeth. And is freaking annoying. But is gorgeous. And funny. And annoying. But cooks for me, does his laundry (and ours) and is as good of a father as my own.

We have not been a perfect couple, married or otherwise, and what other people may have seen as problems or reasons not to be together, we have remained best friends and true, life long companions.

He is the only person on the planet that understands why I do the things I do, makes fun of the fact that I sleep with a blankie but doesn’t let me forget it on trips, rubs my feet without asking why, and brings me water when I go to bed at night, runs me bathwater, brings me a coke with ice to drink while I am in the tub, and remembers to bring home a bag of chocolate after a business trip for me and hula hoop for Charlotte.

In an age where people marry wondering when they are getting divorced, we have been together longer than many people make it through friendships. We have been to europe, ran a charity program, traveled in the military, spent time apart while he served in Afghanistan, walked across the stage  when we graduated college, were camp counselors together and have taken more trips to theme parks then humanly possible. There hasn’t been a special moment in my life that has not been shared with Chris.

When Chris and I met, I can remember walking through his house and seeing a picture of Nebraska on this wall and asking him what it was from.  We were teenagers at the time, both living in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He explained to me that he had lived in Papillion, a small town in Nebraska, years before that as a child.

So did I.

One year a part in age, our school classrooms missed each other, but we  grew up streets away, playing in the same forest and even going to the same gymnastics school and I often wonder if we passed each other on the street, destined to meet over 10 years later in a different state and time, to go to high school and college together, get married and eventually have a child of our own.

If you believe in soul mates, in fate, in one person for one person, I am lucky to have met that person. To raise a child (maybe more children?) with him, and to be a part of his life. Although its so easy to take advantage of the luxury of being in love, of having someone near you every moment that takes care of you, that truly believes your beautiful, that wants you of every moment of the day, I never forget that I am blessed to go through life by the side of someone as compassionate, caring, and amazing as the man I married.

To eternity…….

How sweet! I met my husband when we were teenagers, too. I was 16 & he was 18. We got married just two years after that. It’s weird being the one who’s been married longest (10 years) in my age group!

Happy Anniversary to you and Chris! I loved reading your story about being destined to meet. That is pretty insane that you both lived in the same city thousands of miles away before meeting!

It’s nice to know that there are couples like you guys out there!

Happy Anniversary! What a nice story..I would say you are definetly soul mates! My husband and I will be married 22 years this month, but we dated for six years before we married. We were also high school sweethearts. I was sixteen and he was eighteen when we started dating. I feel as if we grew up together and couldnt imagine my life without him. Love the pictures also…thanks for sharing!

  5. That is so sweet! Our anniversary is on May 27…we met my freshman year of college and it turned out that my hubs went to college across the street from my high school (he is 3 years older).

My best friend got married one month after me to her high school sweet heart. They started dating when she was 16 and now have been married 9 years and are parents to twins! The funny thing is as her BFF in high school, I was like, “I don’t know about this guy…” but obviously they are perfect for each other! :) I”m glad she didn’t listen to me back then. I ended up being her maid of honor ;)

Beautiful. Save it. Print it. Put it somewhere you’re child (children?) will read it someday and know how much their mom loved their dad. A relationship like that is special. :)

  13. Tammy says:

Well Happy Anniversary to you!!! I married my high school sweetheart also and have been for 21 years. We have also had our good and bad times but I wouldn’t give him up and for the world.

Great photos! Congrats on your anni! You’re so lucky to have a man that lets you know (in little ways and big ways) that he loves you more than life! I wish you and Chris many more happy, blessed, full, wonderful, fun, dorky years together! ;) ((hugs))

  15. Emily says:

Happy anniversary–great photos! You two are a HOT couple!

  16. Naomi says:

Such a cute couple, congratulations! I cannot imagine being with my high school boyfriend… although we just got in touch on Facebook and he’s a DA now, which is pretty hilarious considering how anti-establishment he was back then.

Happy anniversary to you both and congratulations also to Charlotte for having awesome parents who love each other as much as they love her.

  17. Happy Anniversary!

I know exactly what you mean about being with someone your whole life. I met my Husband in the 7th grade. We started dating senior year in HS and got married (finally) 10 yrs later in 1998. We are going on 21 years of being together and almost 11 married.

Not everything has been all wine and roses, but we’re still here, still together. He is the one I want to talk to every day. He makes me laugh. He can finish my sentences. He can also annoy and frustrate the crap out of me to the point that a cast iron skillet upside his head seems like a good idea! LOL

Ah, the many stages and nuances of love and marriage. Never a dull moment.

Wishing you and Chris a lifetime of Happy Anniversaries! (and more babies!)
