In the conference right now….Post #1 (Guy Kawasaki)

guyAlright girls, I am here with my lap top and it has about an hour worth of charge, so Ill be updating this post with the information as it goes on. You all have wondered what is it like being at a convention. I suppose we will be learning together today!

9:20 Carrie from www.OPmom.com is talking right now. There are approximately 160 people in attendance . I am in the 2nd row like a good student sitting between Mabel Labels and Misty from AdvenaArtemis. They are talking about the keynote speakers and what they have done in the past that makes them worthy of teaching us all day. Talking about Guy Kawasaki right now. Guy and Karen are now in front of the stage chatting to us now. He is worried that the shirt he is wearing is the same one he wore last time and that everyone will think that he has only one shirt. He is pretty funny. Karen is now stroking Guys ego. Guy is saying he isn’t a rock star, that he just ‘blogs and tweets’. He went to Stanford University. He is talking about all his past jobs; he worked for Apple, counted diamonds, started up software companies. He is talking about Alltop as his main project right now.

9:29 Guy is explaining RSS and readers/subscribing. He is saying that RSS is about pushing information at people, where blogs are bringing people to you. Instead of going out to purchase Vogue, this is like bringing all the information to you. Alltop is an RSS site where it lays out every topic in the category so you can subscribe right to the category and reach blogs of all the same category at one time. Its a pretty cool idea.

9:31 The phone just rang in the audience and it was the only guy here. Funny!

9:32 Karen just asked Guy if blogging is dead and did twitter kill it.

9:34 Guy is admitting that only 80% of his tweets are his and that 20% of his tweets come from another sites feed. He is saying that twitter is a marketing weapon to reach “68,000″ of his closest friends. He needs interesting links to keep peoples attention so people tolerate his Alltop advertising.

9:37 Guy admits that he has nothing to say on his blog after 3 years and that is quality and quantity has gone down. He now interviews authors a lot for his site. He doesnt believe blogging is dying and that we should worry more about journalism then blogging.

9:40 Karen asked Guy if there will ever be another Dooce. Guy says that out of 80 million bloggers, only 8K make money from it. He believes most people dont blog to make money and that if we stopped doing things that we can only make money at, that we would have to stop everything…..photography, knitting, etc. If you only do things in life that you made money at, we wouldn’t even have children.

9:42 Guy just said that the next persons phone who rings will need to donate $100 to the breast cancer foundation. Everyone just turned off thier phone. LOL

9:34 He thinks that all bloggers need to auto put their feeds into twitter and that you use twitter to feed people back to your identity-your blog. The assumption is that your blog has good stuff and why would you not send people back to your blog. If your looking for a job, you should have a blog so HR can see your knowledge.

Blogging is Branding. Twitter is Marketing.

9:45 Bloggers should not have a blog that solely promotes your product, only 1 out of 10 posts. That the majority should be about you as a person, or articles, or pointing out other companies. That people buy stuff not just about the product, but about the persons passion or vision.

9:47 They just asked Guy what the biggest mistake in blogging is. He said its made primarily by men and that “its that people think other people give a shit who they are”. They have now replaced the word shit with shitake. Its pretty funny.

9:54 He is talking about using twitter and becoming an identity and resource on twitter. He is saying he wishes twitter would hire him.

9:59 They asked Guy his advice on using social media. He is complementing everyone here being funny and attractive. He loves Kirtsy. He said it pisses him off to no end that BlogHer wont let  ‘asshole’  men speak. He believes women make the buying decisions but 50 year old men make marketing decisions. He says when he talks to mom bloggers that they often apologize for being “just” a mommy blogger. He believes you should be proud that you can run a household and a blog. He says he has been offered pictures of many womens body parts to list them on Alltop and to stop being apologetic or begging on what you do. That men dont beg and that women should stop.

The test is if you have “good Shitake” you dont need to beg, if you have bad “shitake” then your cookies dont matter.

Stand up for who you are.

Sites he believes you should use:

www.tynt.com

www.twitterhawk.com  (this is really really cool, cannot wait to work with this!)

www.tweetdeck.com

~Guy is over. New post for next speaker.

I am still trying to figure out twitter, facebook, stumble upon, etc. I don’t have time to “tweet” stuff all day long. Like I need another thing to make me sit in front of the PC??!!

Now if I could figure out how to auto feed it, then I’m there!

Thanks for the info, er shitake, Trisha. It’s almost like we are there with you!

BTW, is Dooce even there? Or is she just being talked about? LOL

Fabulous article. Guy sounds amazing – love that he recognizes mom bloggers for the force that they are… now if only most of us mom bloggers would recognize that too.

[...] 4) Random advice: If you invite a stranger to share a room with you, know that they may snore so loud that NOTHING wakes them up. The bathroom on a nonconvention floor will have NO line in the bathroom, where the line will be out the door on the other one. Even if a blogger acts all big and bad and drops the F bomb a lot, they can still be a hugger. If you are not in the room with your butt in a seat on time, you will miss your name being pulled out of the prize box and someone else will win your prize. Sometimes the best women speakers, are actually men. [...]
