I think it is rude to expect everyone to find a sitter. I also find it rude to not include the children, as long as they behave. It's not like it is a bachelorette party. Geez. If it was a less formal/open invitation (hostess called and said hey potluck at my place, spread the word) then children would be acceptable even if not specifically mentioned. But if your name is the only one on the invitation, then you are the only one invited. End of story.
