Kids Lunch Box Cards:review, interview, and contest (closed)

Promotional — By Trisha-admin on August 5, 2008 at 12:46 pm

I am always amazed at how cool “mom” invented products are…so for this contest, I was so intrigued after we received some ourselves, that I contacted the Mom that invented it, Gina, to ask her about her inspiration and what prompted her to move ahead with her idea. I was surprised at the answers! You just never know who your talking to, right? Gina has proved to be one of the nicest, most warm women I have talked to on the Internet and has even offered me some advice and a smile at the end of a hard day on my own business. Moms truly are the source of all great kid ideas andI marvel at the strength and character it takes to run a company, raise kids…and still have time to feed their families at the end of the day.

So take some time to read how she got started, visit her site, and enter the contest here. I can personally say that Kids Lunchbox Cards are a hit in my home and I wont be surprised if they are a hit in yours as well.

KidsLunchBoxCards are a super-fun alternative to the humdrum lunch-time napkin note. They revolutionize communication between moms and kids at that vulnerable time during a long school day. A special note that says…

Our interview with Gina about her business:

1) What prompted you to start KidsLunchBoxCards…(the story behind it)

When she was in 2nd grade, my 7 year old daughter would complain about not having friends at school. During those days, when I went to kiss her goodnight, I would feel tears running down her cheeks, and she would tell me about how she would sit alone at lunch and how humiliating it was. It felt like my heart was splitting in half, and I knew I had to do something. I had recently quit being a costume illustrator for feature films to be a stay at home mom. I started drawing fun cartoons with riddles, quizzes and true wacky stories  that I knew would make her giggle, and I put them into her lunch.

2) how did you go from idea, to company
The lunch cards worked so well, it changed my daughters life. Kids would gather around her to see the days card and try to answer correctly. The cards sparked conversation, and now she has a huge group of friends. I also used them for my little girls- who reluctantly went to school unless they had a lunch card to look forward to-if there was a card in their lunch- all of a sudden mornings were easy! Other moms started calling asking where I got them…. and I witnessed so much separation anxiety with other kids, I then decided I had to try to go to print with one set andsee what would  happen. I knew I would need graphics, so I asked my friend Rose to come on board. We set out to create test cards- to see what kids of different ages  and genders liked and didn’t like, and what size would be best. After that was accomplished, I  asked my retired father ( who created Rice-A-Roni andwas the president of family owned  Ghirardelli Chocolate & Golden Grain Macaroni) to be my investor, my husband Markus ( an actor who plays the dad on the t.v.show “Unfabulous” ) to be in charge of marketing and my very smart brother to handle all the legal stuff!

3) what has been your biggest struggle off the ground?

Having people understand what the product is, and how it can help  kids.

4) how did you find manufacturing/printing
My neighbor and mom, Deborah Gallant, has a business that helps people with” a great idea” get their business off the ground called Lifeworkcatalyst.com. She recommended a printer, and has been a wonderful guide from the  beginning.

5) how did you find start up funding

see #2!

7) what are your long term goals with your company

My dream is to have an expansive line- there are so many subjects to have fun with, and I really want to get to my non readers line.  It’s endless!

8) what has been the most rewarding
When the cards make kids smile, when kids are giddy and have something to look forward to at lunch and don’t feel sad to go to school, when a mom feels like she is sending a “hug” to her child who’s at school- it’s all good!

This is Charlotte showing me her “favorite one

When we received them, they WERE fun. We brought them withus to Sonic while we sat around to check them out, and I have to say that even my DH and I learned some new fun (and some disgusting) facts. Kids of all ages are really going to enjoy these. I asked my daughter flat out, she is 3.5 yrs old, if she would like these in her lunch, it was a very loud YES! Although she cant read, she did enjoy the pictures and Gina assured us she has a younger line also coming out soon.

I know my son would love this product because he absolutely loves the facts and riddles on his outmeal packets and asks me every morning to read them to him.

Also, an idea for the website – real photos of the products intead of the scanned images. Even though the cards look exactly the same there’s just something about having a real photo on the site that appeals to me when I’m buying something.

I think doing giveaways is a great way to start getting the word out. So I would think doing more giveaways would be a great idea (of course I’m biased, I’d like to win these from some giveaways). You could send out samples to parenting magazines. Or you could do your own giveaways and make it a condition for an extra entry that people have to add your button to their blog to enter and get more exposure that way.

Getting the word out….you are on this mommy blog so that’s a great start!
Our kids would love it, who wouldn’t love a little note in their lunchbox???

You could bring samples into your child’s pediatrician and have a little sample stand.

You know, I just thought of another, better, way for her to get the word out – offer a frequent buyers card or discounts for multiple purchases. I’d love to get these for not just my kids, but neices, nephews, friends of my children, etc, for Christmas.

I also think she should contact boutiques and get these in. Oh nelly, I probably have a ton of ideas to help her! lol

My children would love these, I always write them notes. These are cool!

What she can do to get the word out is send out ’sampler packs’ – collecting and exchanging business cards/samples and such with other women, who then take these, bag them up nicely as a ‘thank you gift’ with each order, and include them. She helps get the word out about her business, they get their word out, etc.

I am sure it is hard but getting featured in a parenting magazine article would be super for business, but contests like this are super for getting the word out and us mommy bloggers looking at and sharing her site. My mom used to put cute notes in my lunchbox and I LOVED them, what a super idea!!

    HI
    1. Contact and advertise in Parents/Baby Magazines
    2. Contact Rachael Ray, Ellen, etc to give out to the audience (they’ll love it)
    3. Contqact the national branch of PTO

My grandchildren would love this because I put notes in their lunch boxes all the time.

i think you should set up a pta fundraiser thing — pta’s can sell them for a small percentage of the proceeds, that would get the word out and get sales going!

my kid will love to get these in his lunchbox. he’s so excited about going full-day this year and eating lunch at school. this will make it even better.

This sounds like something Hallmark would totally go for! My daughter starts school next month and she is my first. I’m already experiencing seperation anxiety and I bet these little cardswould make me feel better to know that she’ll still have mommy time while we are apart.

I think it would be great to see animal facts of some sort. I have an animal lover in my house, who would love nothing more than to get cards with fun facts about animals on them!
I think sending flyers to schools to post at fairs or to community centers would be a great idea to get the word out.
    Thanks!

My kids would love these even though they are home schooled. We sometimes have picnics outside and I pack their lunches in individual pails. They would love to get these as a special treat then and when I pack them lunches when we are on the road. It would make them smile and feel extra love.

My girl would love these! I put notes in her lunchbox when I make her lunch (usually my husband makes it, and he doesn’t put notes! He also gives her a plain sandwich instead of the cute shapes I give!) and she really loves them. She says it’s like the book The Kissing Hand, which is one of her favorites. She says she feels loved when she gets a note from me at lunch.

    Tracye says:

I think she should contact Family Fun and Parents magazines. They could put a free one inside each magazine (like they do with subscription cards) with info on how/where to order or get more.

I suggest that she send some flyers up here and I’ll put them on base. These would be great to send to daddy’s in Iraq.

How about you give some to local grammar schools to put one in each of their orientation packets at the beginning of the year?

I was also thinking how it would be nice for hospitals to put them in the children’s meal trays. It would certainly brighten their day if they are stuck the hospital. The parents would probably love them too.

My 2 little ones would love these as a reminder that I’m thinking of them while I’m not there. My son particularly would enjoy having something that no one else has.
