Majorly Massive Grasshopper!

Yesterday my family went to Bellingrath Gardens and it was FULL of nature. Huge spiders, butterflies, snakes… I told my spouse that nature would be a lot more fun without the nature some days.

As we rounded the corner though on one of the gardens, I yanked Charlotte back. I could see MASSIVE feet over a leaf and didn’t know what it was. Turns out it was a 3 inch grasshopper.

I have never seen anything like it. It was as long as my husbands palm. I was terrified it would jump at me when we passed!

(I may have let out a girly scream taking these pictures)

Here are a few more pictures of the sights we saw…Bellingrath was just full of beauty yesterday!

And even better, we were nearly the only people there.

Have I mentioned how much I love my camera too?

  1. Beautiful! My granddaddy used to let us shoot those large grasshoppers in their yard with a bb rifle when we would visit them in Florida. They ARE huge.

  2. Those are some great pics and I would have let out girly screams the entire time too — the chance of it jumping on you is just too risky lol

  3. Beautiful pics. I need to use my camera more but forget I have it. Yesterday we were coming home from church and JD got excited to see a caterpillar in front of the house. That thing was huge and walking along the front. The other day coming home from a card class I saw what I thought was a rope in the middle of the road. When I got closer it was a snake with the skin removed and a buzzard on the side of the road. That thing was about 3 – 3 1/2 feet long and about 1 1/2 -2 inches in diameter. Those are moments you can’t recreate and I forget to capture them.

I had one of those grasshopper guys hanging out on my patio last week. I took a picture and sent to to my nephew, told him the thing was so huge I was worried it may eat the cat if I let her out on the patio with me lol. He said “its just a grasshopper, I used to catch them all the time when I was younger”. I kinda figured it was in that category but the size still freaked me out a bit.

  5. Looks more like a locust than a grasshopper, they are much larger and, although they can and do jump, they tend to fly more. Grasshoppers and crickets are in the same category as locusts but they are smaller (except Mormon crickets and they are huge and ugly).

  6. I still want you to take pics of Mike and I there one of these days!

  7. Remember me at that butterfly pavilion in Mexico?

  8. That looks like a beautiful place to visit! One thing I don’t miss about the south is the GIANT bugs!! I remember seeing those grasshoppers in FL. YUCK! When I was in drum corps some of my fellow members would put those in other member’s sleeping bags!
