Monopoly: Why Adults Dont Play Boardgames

monoply1While the rest of you were probably partying it up in Bourbon Street or New Yorks Times Square, Dh and I settled in around 930, after Charlotte’s coffee induced caffeine high wore off, to play……a board game.

Now, we don’t play them that often. We pull them out if we have friends over, the operative word being “if” or perhaps “friends” as we have neither here. My Dh has a long standing hatred to Monopoly, as he cant stand to lose, and well, neither can I.

He calls my trades “special deals” that you will lose if you make. Well, winning doesn’t always equal fair..it is Monopoly after all. If I offer you a property you want in exchange for 2 properties I want and you take it, that’s not my problem.

Now, we don’t have a regular old Monoply game, we have Monoply dot com, which we got years and years ago, I think back when I was still in college and people had green text on their black computer screens.

It’s so old in fact, that there are websites on the board that we are not even sure exist anymore. Where Park Place and Boardwalk are on the original game, Yahoo and Expedia exist. We also think that the old utilities, on this board as cell phone companies (one we are not sure exists anymore..MCI Worldcom?), would be social networking sites including myspace, facebook and twitter if it was remade.

Maybe they should update MonopolyDotCom…or maybe they should do MonopolyBlogDotCom. Ha! That would be fun. Maybe not for someone not as dorky as I am, but I could sit there and acquire other blogs., Perez Hilton, The Huffington Post…….I digress.

Now this game is done in millions and billions, not regular dollars. In the beginning, that is fun. Ooh, 200 million dollars….oh, I owe you 26 million dollars? Chump change.

Then get it gets evil. Office buildings start going up and your once 26 million dollar rent charge turns to 500 million and that is where the game gets ugly.

My husband landed on Free Parking about 5 times in a row. So much in fact, that I think he may have been rigging the dice with some of those Vegas throws. Then he would smell the money slowly as I stared at my 50 million dollars, which was depleted due to his excessive office building supply on two sides of the board I inevitably landed on every time I went around. He managed to skip my section (I owned the two highest properties on the page) by going to jail about another 5 times before he could complete the circle. The few times he landed on my properties, it was like the cheapest website slums out there, pocketing a whopping 10 million dollars- WITH an office on it. He stuffed it in my bra for good measure.

You know when your playing a game and you would rather quit then play anymore? I think we both got a bit moody at some points. It’s honestly not fun to lose, no matter what you try to teach your kids (its all in the game….yeah right, that’s what losers say).

We didn’t finish the game because it was well past our bedtimes (read: old farts that cant stay up past midnight), but when we did close up the box, I had like 1 billion dollars and he had about 5 00 billion dollars or something insane like that. He decided that he must have won because he had more money…I was reminding him that the game turns on a dime and 2 lands on my pieces would cut his fortune in half, but I do think he went to bed smug.

Its awesome to bring in the new year as a loser. Now Im keeping my walmart win all to myself.

How is that for a special deal.

We don’t play monopoly very often, but we play other board games all the time. We like Sorry, Moods, any Scene It game, and we have tons more.

We play board games all the time. Our 7yo loves them. We play dominoes a lot with him too, but we don’t keep score – yet. When DH and I play dominoes after the kids are in bed, look out. We’re both highly competitive, and we’ve been known to toss the “c” word out at each other. At least we can say what happens during the game stays with the game, and there’s no hard feelings when we’re done.

We have the plain old Monopoly, but spend more time playing Hi Ho Cherry O, Live, and Hands Down lol. We used to do a family game night once a week, but after hubby joined the fire department it became impossible because he was always being called out. For Christmas the kids got Sorry and Operation so perhaps we should start again!

Why I don’t play boardgames is because my toddler would not allow it. LOL My kids are more into Wii and Nintento now. I used to play boardgames alot when I was a kid with my mother, siblings and cousins. I enjoyed it alot. We played Sorry!, Monopoly and Yahtzee. We also played alot of card games.

We play board games A LOT. There is nothing else to do here in the Winter. I love Scrabble, but my dh does not know any words, so we don’t play that often. He LOVES Monopoly, but it takes too long in my opinion. One of our faves is Trivia Pursuit Pop Culture. It has a DVD you put in and has video questions and different categories like movies, tv, fads and music. So fun!

  7. I can honestly say I hate Monopoly with a passion. Jon and I play much the same way and it can get ugly. I’ll stick to card games.
