Summer Has Arrived – And Brought Allergy Season With It

After our annual Easter Cold snap, this week has shown that Summer is indeed on its way. The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming… and there is enough pollen in the air to irritate anyone. In fact lots of people I know are complaining that they are battling allergies as well – even for the first time.

I have never had allergy issues. I take vitamins daily and honestly I can not even tell you when the last time was that I was sick or felt bad. However the last few days I have been channeling Snow White’s friend Sneezy.

Since many people can still not afford health insurance for families, many people are turning to alternative medicine to help ease their allergy suffering. I personally would rather take an herbal remedy than anything over the counter – which is why I take grapefruit seed daily to fight off infection. However allergies are a whole different story. Here are some tips for easing your allergy suffering – the natural way.

peppermint-teaPeppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is a natural decongestant and works as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. You can find peppermint tea at your local grocery store – it even comes in Kcups for your Keurig!

Apple Cider Vinegar

I have heard of using Apple Cider Vinegar for everything from heartburn to weightloss, but its ability to reduce mucous production and cleanse the lymphatic system makes it useful for allergies. You can also pick it up at your local grocery store. Simply mix with water to dilute and drink it down! 

Netti Pot

Now, I am the first to admit that this is my last alternative, but I have friends who swear by it. The Netti Pot literally flushes your sinuses… literally. The theory here is that it literally rinses away allergens and irritations.  I am too chicken… and I am a little bit afraid of drowning myself.

This is one we can all get on board with! Local honey will help your body adapt to the allergens in the environment in your local area – helping you to build an immunity or tolerance to them. To use – simply consume at least one teaspoon of local to you honey one or more times a day every day and voila! 

If you are battling allergies this season and nothing seems to be working – go see your doctor. Sometimes the best that nature has to offer is not enough to fight off the toxins in our environment. This season be sure to get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids… and know that it will all be over soon.

  1. I absolutely LOVE my Netti pot! Once you get over the bizarre factor of running water up one nostril and out the next, you will be surprised by how much better you feel! I am also having excellent results using essential oils to help me with allergy relief. Way cheaper than OTC medications, and much better for you, too!

    Yuck to the apple cider vinegar! I despise vinegar. But I can totally get on board with the peppermint tea which happens to be my favorite tea and the honey, I don’t have a neti pot but I have used a squeeze bottle. I don’t like things going through my nose at all. I don’t even like to blow my nose. But using the bottle wasn’t too bad. I was actually pretty sick this past week and had to resort to using the squeeze bottle to help,clear my sinuses.
