Only In Alabama: The Grammar Police

Now I have had this blog since the end of July….so not even 7 months yet. I get a lot of email regarding a lot of subjects, but the past week I have gotten FOUR, yes FOUR emails explaining to me that my grammar is incorrect on the words:

Your vs You’re

and

Than vs. Then

I didn’t know you all cared so much. Much less four separate people….or maybe its one and she is really insistent on me changing it and has come up with additional aliases….either way, I am starting to think that my site has been printed on a teachers site and they are all coming over to correct me in  a big red pen grammar mob.

The fact is, I am lazy. If spell check says its right, its right. I have seen bloggers SOUND OUT THEIR WORDS and not even spell check, so surely my little grammar no nos are not that heartbreaking. My biggest mistake is skipping words and I usually don’t catch that (if i do at all) till after the post is published. I can read a 500 page book in 2 hours, and have been able to since I was about 8 and my mind is trained to automatically skips words like “the”, “and”, and  “or”. Because of that, I often do it in my typing as well.

So when we were out driving this weekend and I saw this sign down the street from us, I realized………Its NOT me.

Its Alabama.

Its starting to rub off onto me.

ICK! GET THE ALABAMA OFF OF ME. ITS  CONTAGIOUS!!!

Don’t sweat it Trisha, most of us LOVE your posts–whether they are “correct” or not. I get great enjoyment/laughs by keeping up with you. (And not over your grammar either!)

Let’s all consider choosing our battles…
    :)

  2. Tara says:

that is too funny! I’ve seen that before too, on big ‘ole signs that everyone can see. I just have to laugh :)

  3. I think it makes it more personable. Just be yourself and write from the heart. That’s what makes your blog so great.

  4. This is gonna (ooohhh bad grammar word there) sound really bad, but I had to read the sign three times before I caught on that prescription was spelled incorrectly. You’re not alone trisha.

  5. People seriously need to relax! Yeah, I’ve noticed grammar mistakes before, but it doesn’t bother me. Especially since I KNOW I’ve made mistakes while typing something up myself. It’s not a big deal, just read it and move on. I think it adds character to a post! Plus, those people who emailed you can’t seriously think they’ve never made a mistake while typing.

    to too two

    Who cares, really?

It’s not just you, Trisha. I’m trying to learn not let the grammar online make my skin crawl so much. I didn’t e-mail you, but those are all common mistakes I see on forums ALL the time. The one that really gets my panties in a bunch though is accept vs. except. I can handle typos. I can’t type worth a crap most days, but those are just blatant grammatical mistakes.

  7. Mary Moore says:

In my most humble opinion, I believe correcting someone else’s grammar, especially when not even asked to do said action, is simply arrogant and rude. And that’s coming from an editor. So there! You go girl!

  8. jenn says:

LOL— This is to near and dear to my heart. I am the queen on screw up when it comes to spelling and grammar. Just love us anyways– right?

  9. Trisha-admin says:

    @ Melissa:
    and u love me anyway.

not true on the line, btw, The top line has 18 letters but the bottom one has 20. They had room for more up top.

  10. Melissa says:

That sign probably has prescription spelled wrong the first time because it wouldn’t all fit on one line otherwise.

I can’t help but spot grammar errors right away in reading blogs, but I just have to turn the other cheek.

I’ve come to realize that your “your and you’re” is just who you are and I just chuckle and move on. =)

  11. Jennifer says:

Many people notice spelling errors and sadly I spell well yet my typing skills are lacking and I do not proof read. As for the comment about marking errors in red pen, that is not longer considered okay, because kids view red as an angry color. Sadly, I am not kidding. The schools were trying to decide on a “neutral” color to correct errors. My tax dollars at work. FYI, purple was chosen.

  12. Angie says:

    @ Trisha-admin:
Sure! I’m up for the challenge! ;)

  13. Trisha-admin says:

Thats it, im wquitting. andim going toslepplell everyting wrong from hre on out.

    LOL!!

  14. Jenny says:

To be honest, I notice nearly every single time I see a grammatical error. It’s an annoying gift I’ve had since I was a kid. I reviewed a book recently and found five or six errors that made it through to publishing. The funny thing is that I can write well but have NEVER been able to speed-read. I wonder if it’s because I am nit-picking and you aren’t. I don’t do it on purpose!

I have noticed the your-and-you’re thing on your blog, but pointing it out? That is a little weird. Were they rude about it? You are writing a conversational-type blog, not a doctoral thesis. I have to admit, though, that seriously incorrect grammar and spelling has sometimes caused me to discount a person’s credibility on some subjects, especially when I disagree. I do think it’s a good idea to proofread certain posts which are trying to debate an important point and win people over.

  15. mommyinpink says:

    LOL! that is seriously funny!

  16. Gina says:

Maybe they ran out of ps (or is it p’s?)??

And bad spelling is not limited to Alabama. While there are certainly plenty of examples here, there have been in every state I’ve lived in.

  17. Shannon says:

LOL I started my career at a newspaper so I was trained to read every article first for content and then again letter per letter for spelling and then again for grammar mistakes, punctuation, etc. I used to do this on billboards (along with “name that font”). lol It irritates me TO NO END that homebuilders always have “Homes from the 120′s” when it is “Homes from the 120s”. Soooo many people use ‘s when it isn’t needed. Well, now I don’t do it because a) I only get a few hours of sleep a night so my brain is fried and I end up making the same mistakes myself because my mind isn’t all that clear and b) Now that texting and type chatting is around I am MUCH less careful in my typing. I use to not even abbreviate anything because it bothered me. How times change! :)

  18. Trisha-admin says:

Angie, your cracking me up. I am going to go straight to VLOGGING. Better yet, why not I bring you on to go in and grammar correct my posts so I don’t worry anymore. LOL!!

    trisha

  19. Angie says:

    LOL, Trisha!

I will admit, the mistake between your and you’re bothers me. In fact, I even posted about it the other day. Now, I never mentioned names. I only said that it was a common mistake that I was seeing on a LOT of blogs – which is very, very true! There’s no way I would email anyone and tell them their grammar was wrong. I’ll just post a general blog about it instead. That way everyone who makes the mistake (including me!!) can hear about it. ;)

That sign is awful. Down the street from us, we have a furniture shop with a HUGE sign that says “YOUR HERE.” I cringe every single time I drive by it, and I refuse to shop there just because of their sign. Crazy, I know. It’s the teacher in me. I correct my kids and my husband all the time. Drives them crazy, but it drives me crazy when they say something wrong. I don’t want them sounding like the hillbillies down here!

With all that said, I love this blog, and nothing will keep me away! Not even the occasional grammar mistake. :)

  20. Sarah says:

But they got the spelling right the second time! I hate when people send me that e-mail because then I get all paranoid and start wondering if it’s who or whom. Is it effect or affect? Great! Now the grammar paranoia is contagious too! Enjoy your decontamination.
