I agree with the pullup being evil in the home. For outings they can be great but way to expensive and confusing for kids. Just a fancy diaper is all they are.

My 3 year old trained himself at 17 months..Now my youngest who is 17 months has no interest in the potty what so ever..all kids are different, I do not want to push him till he is ready...hopefully it is soon though! :)

I am dreading this part- my kids are almost 2 so Im working on my daughter now. I didnt want to buy a potty because ill probably have to wean them off the potty onto the real toilet anyways, so i bought a soft Dora toilet seat. My son wont sit on it, so i decided to start with one first. My daughter has done both on the toilet a few times, but i dont think she knows whats shes doing yet. I thought about getting her dora underwears, tell her she has to keep dora clean and dry but she still doesnt understand. I agree i think pulls ups might confuse themwith diapers, but i might try them out when i get serious with PT

Connor did really well with just pullups/underwear and I'll be doing the same with James once he is more interested in the potty. He'll sit on the little one with his diaper on or off.

I was just going to post about this today on my personal blog. I have attempted potty training my 34 month old boy a couple of times to no avail. I really would like him out of diapers by 3, but I know that's not my decision. ;) Thanks for the great tips. I just went & bought some pull ups last night thinking that might encourage him, but after reading these comments maybe not. My daughter was much easier to train!

We finally finished PTing #3. All my kids did not initiate. I was always amazed to hear other moms talk about how their kids wanted to PT & were younger than 3.

It was a long battle of wills with each child. I agree with the others who say skip pull ups and go straight to underwear. If you have to go out, put a pull up over the underwear to minimize leakage at Target :)

Good luck. I'm so relieved it's over in my house.

My son took an extreme interest in PTing when he was 19 months old. He was in underwear for everything except bed time (when we use Pull-ups) by 24 months.

My tip is to put them on the potty if they are dry when they wake up from nap or sleeping. They will most likely pee a few minutes after they wake up - and you have instant, easy success that they understand. It sets them up for potty success!

And I think its a myth that boys are harder to PT.

My son was a stinker and he didn't fully potty train until 3. I think our biggest problem was not letting him do it on his own time. Our family kept pushing and pushing from age 1 and up. I knew you couldn't force a kid to do this but since he was my first I listened to them. It turned out to be an awful struggle. So this time we'll take it slow with our daughter and wait until she shows us she's ready.

My youngest will be 2 soon and I haven't even thought about this yet. We're in the middle of a move and didn't want to get him all trained and then have the upheaval set us back. I was waiting until we're in the new house and done rocking his little world as he knows it (less than a week now and I'm sitting here reading posts).

i just let my kids do it at their own pace. no sense in rushing it and pushing it if they arent ready. my oldest was almost 3, my middle dd was 3.5 and my baby is amlost 18 months, adn i havent even thought about when im gonna try it. she cant really talk yet, so until she understands what potty means, im not gonna press the issue.
