My family has adopted 3 cats from the Humane Society, got 2 free cats from a couple that was required to move & pets weren't allowed anymore, bought 1 dog from the pet store (that had been returned by the people before me because he had the habit of eating poop), & bought a husky from a breeder (NOT a puppy mill. They really love ALL of their dogs & interact with them every day.) in Iowa. We plan on breeding ours at least once, but it isn't to sell them. 3 are being given to family & then the rest will be found great homes with people we know.

I don't think dogs should be treated like children in the aspect that they get TONS of clothes (the dog bought from the pet store I gave away when we were going to be moved to Japan - little dog + Japan = dinner - & now has more clothes than I do.) but they shouldn't be treated like cattle either. Our dog was kennel trained within a month of getting her - she would be locked in the kennel if we left the house or went to bed, but is free to roam if we're there. Now she sleeps in bed with us & hogs MY pillow and sleeps on MY side of the bed when she is my husband's dog - is still put in the kennel when we leave especially after trying to eat my palm tree one day.

My parents have a "pure bred" Golden Retriever, whose original owners purchased from a puppy mill at the local mall. The blurry photo copy of his lineage is almost a straight line (if it even is his, or just one the store keeps around for inquiring customers). At 2 yrs, this dog is larger than any other golden I've seen, with a tall narrow body, splayed toes, and the head of bassett, i.e. droopy eyes. The poor guy just looks wrong, like a teenage dog going through his ugliest growth spurt.
