When starting out doing reviews for companies on your blog, it can be pretty overwhelming at first. You receive all these ‘free’ items in the mail in exchange for your honest opinion of the item after trying it out. It sounds pretty easy doesn’t it? And so, people (mostly moms) flock to WordPress (as they should) or Blogger and create their own blog. Once you start pumping out a few reviews, more and more can come your way. Soon, your house may start to get a little crowded with all those items.
What’s a blogger to do?
Here comes the morality question of the day:
Is it ever ok to sell your review items?
After all, if you can’t make use of little Suzie’s diaper bag after using it to review for month, why shouldn’t someone else enjoy it (and why not make a few dollars on the side). What about that DVD you watched with your kids once and is now sitting on the shelf? It’s still on the shelves at the local department store, surely someone would want it for half price from you.
In my case, if I can’t make use of an item after it’s been reviewed, I pass it on to a friend or family member who is all too happy to have my used diaper bag, or even the half-used bottle of shampoo or body wash I tried. My friends love these small little gifts, even used, because it was free and they love trying out things too.
Innocent enough, right?
But what if a blogger decided the review itself was too much work, simply wrote a so-called “review post” ripping off information and PR Releases from the company’s site, and then turns around and sells the item “brand new” to build a nice little bank account?
Sadly, this happens.
But its shocking when you catch it….like I just did.
*cue Law and Order music*
Recently I was blog hopping and came across a review website with a few reviewing bloggers posting a variety of items. After reviewing for the past few months (not quite a year) it seems the girls have grown tired of it and would rather write a quick post using information from various websites, LIE ABOUT USING THE PRODUCT, and then sell the item on their handy Facebook Group Page-which all three writers are a member of at the time of this article.
Immediately I noted the ABC Family DVDs for sale. Good deal on them – brand new and sealed! But wait, didn’t they just “review” all these items? How do you review a DVD you haven’t watched?
Surely they couldn’t be lying with this disclosure statement all front and center on their blog.
Take a peek:

Get out the popcorn, it gets better… In September this blogger “reviewed” the O Yikes 24/7 Messenger bag. Here’s a screenshot of the so-called-review where the writer states that her husband “uses the bag all the time” and loves it.

Interesting since they’re now selling the bag on Facebook, brand new, for half the retail price.

Children’s toys are not safe from being sold off quickly either.
Here’s the December review of the very popular Plasma Car where the writer explains that, “The Plasma Car comes in a few pieces and it only takes a matter of minutes to put everything together. The included instructions were very easy to follow; there is an illustrated diagram for each step of the process.”

And then….are you rolling your eyes yet…the Facebook post where they’re selling the Plasma Car new in the box…

One final example, another laptop bag, this one from Melissa Beth Designs.
The writer states, “have taken my bag out several times in the rain (welcome to life in Nova Scotia) and was expecting the felt to go a bit lumpy or pill…not so, the Pocket Full of ‘Puter kept its beautiful exterior felt and did not disappoint me.”
She also shares that, “Almost every time I am out my Pocket full of ‘Puter, someone comments on how cute it is and or asks where I purchased it.”

The same bag is being sold on their blogs Facebook page, you guessed it, brand new with tags still on, for $120. So…are you lying to your visitors of your blog or the facebook buyers? Me thinks the blog since the tags would be soggy from the…rain.

As a blogger, I find this disgusting.
Not only is this blog not actually reviewing these (and likely many other) items for the companies as promised (remember, they are offering ‘an honest review’ in exchange for the product) but they’re also doing a huge disservice to their readers who read these reviews and make purchasing decisions based on them. Further, by selling the items, brand new and at a discount, they’re undercutting the hand that feeds them, selling the same item for less than the company that provided it!
While the writers at this blog were stupid enough to post their items on a public page, I wonder how many others are secretly doing the same. How are we to trust review bloggers now? Is this a case where one apple ruins it for the rest of us?
I hope not.
I know many bloggers, review bloggers, who work very hard trying out items and testing them for days, weeks, before writing an honest review. Some will include photos of the product being used too which should almost be standard for blog testers.
I would out them by name, but Trisha wont let me. You talk her into spilling who this is so you wont accidentally become a victim of this deceit. Oh, AND they are touting blog advice to newbies on their pages. I wonder if one of their upcoming blog posts will be “how to deceive your visitors and not get caught.”
The lesson here, I suppose, is that greed can get to bloggers and ruin what could have been a great blog with loyal readers. I know I won’t be checking out the opinion of this blog for any of my future purchases, but hey if I’m looking for a deal on brand new merchandise, now I know where to go…

*editors note.
I did not write this article, although its published under my name. This isn’t a frequent writer of ours so they don’t have an author tag.
Please note that this article came in with the bloggers info and links attached. I chose to take them out, and edit the photos -although I felt like leaving them.
Consider that my good deed for the year and don’t ask for more.
I verified these screenshots and all of the bloggers on the blog were also a part of the facebook page, so they were all well aware of what was going on…sad…sad.
BTW, if the FTC reads this and wants the info…..
Hey, I’m not *that* reformed.

OK, I am not smart enough to figure it out and I don’t want to be a victim of these people, so someone email me and tell me who I should avoid, please. My info is available in the forum.
Thanks.
Makes one wonder if her list of winners is legitimate.
She has since removed the reviews. We can not allow someone like her to stop businesses from trusting us to review their products fairly and honestly. What can we do to stop her from reviewing other products!
Wow. I think they are in my blog roll, well, no more. I was kind of wondering about this site only because their reviews were VERY short and quick… I try and use my own pictures in most of my posts, unless of course my son runs off with my photo card reader like he did last night, or my batteries die like today.. This blog is sadly going down for something that could have been prevented, like maybe just being honest?
I feel that if you cannot use the item after using and honestly reviewing have a giveaway on your blog, giveaway 2,one new and the other you have used for the review . Another option, you can always go to http://www.thegivingtree.com and granting someones wish. There are people that need these gently used items ,have children and would love them. It is another wonderful, word of mouth ad for the company. I know I am just starting out with reviews and would love to do more! I love bloghopping ,entering giveaways and I do donate most of my wins to people that really need them.
I’d give anything to have PR contact me and have products to review instead of stinking having to buy them myself to do reviews. RIght now I have an As seen on TV series going on on my site, because I got a Snuggie and a few more things that are ASOTV products. I saw someone on Twitter say that they wish there was someone who would do them so I decided to implement the idea. I figure $20 a month to buy something to review will eventually pay of…dear God I hope it pays off. My husband likes playing w/ the “toys” we buy anyway to review even if they’re crap..can I say crap on here? Anyway those idiots are lucky to be given stuff to review instead of having to buy it. I wouldn’t sell it..give it away or free cycle if it wasn’t needed anymore but not saell it brand new. It doesn’t take many to ruin it for the masses though.
You’re only as good as your word.
This doesn’t surprise me. I recently saw a mom write a paid post for a company whose product she had never tested, and that, based on her past blogging, would be adamantly against using. If there is one thing I’ve learned in the year that I’ve been blogging it’s that some people will do anything for a quick buck, or to feel important. It seems like everyone has a price.
I actually set out to do a review website before I even knew that companies give freebies for that purpose! I was just going to review things I had bought myself. I was amazed when I learned about the possibility of working with well-known companies. Like many others on here, I work very hard to put forth a professional website that will make the best companies feel comfortable working with me. I’m still waiting for my “break”. So far I have reviewed steak sauce. And that’s fine – I was happy to do it, I appreciated the freebies, and made sure I provided a fair and honest review in return. It frustrates me to see unethical people with downright crappy websites getting the great freebies. I think the onus is on the companies to do their homework and make sure the reviews are legit. They need to have higher standards. Maybe other people don’t feel this way, but when I see companies working with questionable bloggers it affects my opinion of the company. It makes me wonder if they think their target demographic are stupid or have low standards. Take note, PR people!
This is just wrong. I am just a Mommy Blogger and have many friends who I have met in Online World who are Review Bloggers including my SIL, this is disgusting. I support and do all I can to promote the Review/Giveaway Bloggers, I certainly hope I am NOT supporting this one!
Oh my goodness. I sure hope this doesn’t cause companies to not trust the rest of the review bloggers out there. I put a lot of time and effort into my reviews and this just makes me made.
Oooh snap! How dirty is this?? I can’t believe they would do this so blatantly and sell the products as new (because they haven’t tried/used them!). If you would have told me they were just selling the products after using and reviewing them, it wouldn’t be such a big deal, but this is just wrong. Hopefully it doesn’t ruin it for other review bloggers.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m glad you posted this!
Ugh– I googled it too and am disgusted because I DO follow that blog and I am a subscriber and I feel DUPED!!! I will be unfollowing and unsubscribing now. Thank you for the info.
OH MY GOSH! I mean I know there are some horribly dishonest people out there but never thought a blogger would try to decieve companies like this. I AM JUST STARTING my blog to review products and could NEVER do this. NEVER. I was routed over to this page via Mommy Loves giveaways!!!

Disgusts ME!! This is why I have always, ALWAYS used personal photo’s in my reviews. My children using products and products in my possession.
I find it appalling that this is going on and so very SAD!! I hope the company’s that are working with them get informed and start realizing that a professional PHOTO of a product although it looks nice on a blog post does not justify using a product….Personal photo’s should be included and if that’s not something you want to do because of showing a child’s face, then Water Mark your photo’s over the child’s face so that photo’s can be protected.
Absolutely insane. I of course had to google to see who it was….and I’m glad I don’t follow them via their blog or facebook..some people need to find a dictionary and look up the word honesty. There’s always someone though that’s willing to muck it up for others so they can turn a profit. Always. I hope this doesn’t affect others who do sincere, honest reviews….
OMG Seriously. I like to include pictures of my family using the products. I don’t think I will trust a review unless it really shows it in action. Especially now!
This isn’t one I follow so I wasn’t aware of them. It is sad to think that there are bloggers who would do such a thing. Just sad.
LMBAO! I just unfanned them on facebook and took down their button off my page. Who knew? Thanks for the heads up….damn I wish I could out them right here right now. Liars suck!
amazing and wow. everyone else has said everything there is to say. I would feel too guilty to do that – have to be able to live with myself!
