Woo Hoo!

MomDot is #11 on the Scholastic Children’s Dictionary Back-To-School Blog Tour and I am so excited you are here! There is nothing I am more passionate about than reading and learning.

Not so much about test taking, but hey, can’t win them all….

I ready every day.

EVERY day.

I think its important for children and adults! When I was growing up, I would read a book every 2 days. I could fly through a Stephen King novel at 8 years old sometimes in under 48 hours. And anytime I would ask my mom a question on what a word meant, she would say “Have you looked it up in the dictionary?”

Man, I am excited to be able to do the same thing. Its gonna be like passing the parental stick or something.

As you already know, Charlotte is in school for the year as of this past Monday.  I sure hope this year is the year she stops being so stubborn and translates her phonics to actual reading. Even without that final step, she loves to make up words and skim through pictures and when this dictionary landed in my house, she immediately took interest.

I thought for sure it was something that would be thrown aside, after all its a very large book for her age group, but not only did she immediately take interest in it, she even went and took it to the neighbors and started “teaching” the 2 year old over there.

These pictures are not set up and I did not ask her to get her dictionary.

After playing in the yard last week, she asked me if she could go get it and bring it out, which I said yes.

She had a very genuine interest.

( I did, however, ask her to smile once which she faked because I was interrupting her)

She then asked if she could get her mini desk out (which I said yes)…

I guess the teaching got serious.

She was schooling the neighborhood little girl about the snakes and the frogs on one of the pages.

This year, with school uniforms, I thought we would be saving lots of cash. Oh-So-Wrong I was! Uniforms ended up costing me a small fortune…and so did supplies. I think over the weekend, which was tax free weekend here, I spent over $200 in that final preparation for classroom supplies, backpack, extra uniform shirts, pencils, folders. It all sure adds up big time!

We were running around trying to find these specific yellow and green folders she had to have and I walked into OfficeMax and thankfully, after stopping at 3 places, they had them. It was like a light opened up from the sky at that point.

One thing I didn’t do was save any money this year. I was totally unprepared for this thing they call ‘public education’. I would say MY tip for Back to School savings would be START PURCHASING EARLY. Because combined with our initial uniform purchases and this weekends supply purchases, the final cost was over $350.  And we just went to Target and Walmart.

Ouch

I re-use what I could ( or hand me down) bought second hand.
Saved for what had to be new like good shoes.

  3. Jen says:

Start Early – I know you already said it, but it can’t be said enough. If you start early, you can shop for the “loss leaders” you know the stuff the store advertises for $0.01 or $0.25 – if you are willing to shop lots of places, you can get good stuff for cheap!
