Settle this argument between my DH and I

scrabbleWe were playing Scrabble last night and as it became more and more desperate at the end, we had some disagreements on what is considered a word or not.

My Dh likes to make crap up and say its a word. He will add an “e” on something and say he read it “somewhere”.

Whatever you say, Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater.

We had quite a few “go check the dictionary” moments last night. My opinion is if you can’t define it, you can’t use it.

Anyhoo, at some point he wanted to use the word Wii. At first I said no, its some made up word from a company and not in the dictionary. But then I relented and said fine, he could use it.  I thought that was very negotiable of me. However when I went to use the word “OJ”, he refused to give it to me. Probably because it would have meant I would have WON the game and he could not handle losing to a girl.

(OJ seriously would have netted me like 16 points, ha ha ha)

I made him give up the Wii points after that.

I went the other way than Kasandria – Wii – no — OJ – yes.

The way to solve the arguments is either a scrabble dictionary (book or online) or Webster’s.

  2. Gwenn says:

I meant acceptable words not rules…

  3. Gwenn says:

I didn’t see it on the box anywhere but Wikipedia has the rules about acceptable rules here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble

However we always make up our own rules to games..just make sure to make them clear before starting the game LOL

  4. Gwenn says:

I don’t think your allowed to use proper names or abbreviations in scrabble..I’ll have to go check I have the game in my cabinet. I love scrabble but no one will ever play it with me!

  5. Kasandria says:

I vote yes on Wii and No on OJ

  6. Rob says:

Sounds like a nice friendly game of scrabble. LOL. I think both of you were wrong. Sorry.

  7. Darci says:

Yeah, sorry Trisha, you’re both wrong. ;(

  8. Angela says:

Sorry, Trisha to you and your husband both…we are gung-ho, avid scrabble maniacs and I believe Wii wouldn’t count because it is a Proper noun {brand name is a capitalized proper noun and therefore is not allowed} and OJ is an abbreviation…also not allowed :( Sorry! However, if you can get away with it I always say go for it LOL!

  9. nicole says:

    Neither.

Did you know there is a scrabble dictionary?

  10. Becca says:

My family goes through the same thing every time we play Boggle

  11. Michelle says:

ha ha hilarious. give him an A for effort, but tell him to keep practicing.

  12. Jenny says:

I’d totally call Wii a word. OJ, I’m not so sure about.

  13. Amanda says:

I thought the rules said no proper nouns in Scrabble. Wii would fall into that category. When we play, there’s no abbreviations either. I say no to both.

  14. Faythe says:

    No to both…
OJ is an abbreviation & we play no brand names that are not also an everyday word…
we got one of those huge 3 volume Britannica dictionaries & it gets whipped out all the time, LOL

  15. but then i can’t spell so don’t play the game. but my desktop dictionary say it is an abbreviation. so if they are legal…YOU WIN

  16. JoeyfromSC says:

    No to both!
