Skinny Jeans For Children Suck.

I am having this serious problem with Charlotte’s school clothing that is utterly pissing me off, to say the least.

She has to wear khaki pants to school everyday. Its part of their uniform. I hate uniforms, but that’s another post.

Anyhoo, she has recently hit this growth spurt. I have a 6 year old that comes up to my chest and trust me, she reminds me everyday. “Mommy, I can touch your boobies!”

Her sizes are pretty standard for her age…mainly a 6x. Sometimes a 6, sometimes a 7, but 6x is usually a safe bet if she isn’t around to try things on. The actual problem comes in regarding the style of the clothing available on the market.  For example, I recently went shopping at Target for some new khaki pants for her….everything, and I mean everything, was “skinny” khakis, jeans, corduroys, you name it.

The irony of “skinny” anything in this country cracks me up, but the whole thought process of putting my 6 year old in skinny pants pisses me off. I don’t want her wearing pants that are essentially leggings but troll up her behind.  The problem is, I cant find any pants, with the exception of the uniform store itself, that are not falling under this horrifically inappropriate trend.

Look at this poor girl this morning:

Whose idea was it to make “skinny” jeans for size 2t, 3t, 5t, 6x??  There are certain ages that clothing should not be made in. If it shows your belly, hugs your body, or says “Delicious” on the butt, it should come in sizes 1 and up. As in adults…not in children. Maybe we should be looking to the fashion industry for the destruction of our childrens morality. Maybe it starts with the pants!

Honestly I would have zero issue buying her pants solely from the uniform store except the crotch area isn’t long enough for her body type on the only pants they carry for her and the seam runs desperately close to places it shouldn’t. In short, she refuses to wear them because of it and I dont exactly blame her.

I am all for trend…if it makes my little girl look like a little girl.

Today I bought 3 pair of shorts from Zulily by Hazel that I adore. Sweet..simple….AGE APPROPRIATE.

Now why can’t they have age appropriate pants?

Does anyone have any clue where I can find cargo pants for 6x or have they stopped making them entirely in exchange for childhood sex appeal? I would rather Charlotte look like a boy than a 6 year old trying to walk the runway at school.

  1. I see absolutely nothing wrong with little people wearing skinny jeans. They don’t have curves which are associated with sexuality (unless you’re a pedophile). So seeing them in something form fitting and COVERED doesn’t bother me. There are far worse clothing marketed towards elementary school children.

  2. I have the same problem. Can’t find jeans that fit my little girl properly. I resort to dressing her in a lot of dresses or tunics with leggings because they are comfy and the dresses/tunics cover everything. Try naartjie.com, sometimes they have cute dresses/tunics and leggings.

  3. Amelia Joniston says:

Well umm i disagree with you totally mmy daughter Rebecca is 13 and has worn her super duper tight skinny jeans since she was 5 she loves them and she loves wearing her super tight khaki skinny jeans to school, she is beautiful and loves strutting her stuff!!!!! she isnt innapropriate shes just got style!!! so no there not innapropriate there just not ugly baggy school pants

  4. I just came across this while searching for age-appropriate jeans for my 10 year old. I will take anything that does not say Skinny, Low-rise or Boyfriend in the name. I tend to go with Justice Super Hip or Gap Long and Lean, but I am out of luck in her size due to spring clearance. Maybe you’ll have better luck!

  5. See my daughter is 7 and is OBSESSED with skinny jeans, pants, everything. She’ll yell “MOM have you seen my black skinny jeans.” etc I don’t like them for me, but they look cute on her. I have to sometimes get 1 size bigger then she tucks the extra in her boots.

I’m with you on the school uniforms though. Major suckage!
    Kas

  6. I don’t have any idea where to buy kids clothes, but I agree with you about the oversexuality of children. My ex-SIL used to dress my neices that way and now has all kinds of trouble with them.
I love the way you dress Charlotte, as a little girl with all the ruffles and stuff – she always looks adorable and appropriate. Those shorts are to die for.

  7. I agree about the over sexulization of girls. It annoys the crap out of me and I don’t even have one. As a mother of two boys one in school uniforms too it’s hard finding stuff. I went to sears and spent $25/pair on Dockers because they were the only ones I could find in his size. At Target however I did score a pair of Shaun White Skinny jeans which fit him great ala the “skater” look which he at almost 7 absolutely adores! But they’re not for school.

  8. These are on Etsy but they’re khaki colored cords…maybe she could make them in the fabric you’re looking for? http://www.etsy.com/listing/62989717/avas-little-ruffle-corduroys-12mo-to-4t?ref=sr_gallery_14&ga_search_query=khaki%2Bpants&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=2 and come in sizes large enough. Pretty cute!

These are also on Etsy & cotton with a double ruffle and up to size 7 http://www.etsy.com/listing/54988042/boutique-khaki-double-ruffle-pants-18m?ref=sr_gallery_29&ga_search_query=khaki%2Bpants&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=2

Etsy again – single ruffle, up to size 7, cotton, full length or capris http://www.etsy.com/listing/61882217/khaki-single-ruffle-pants-234567?ref=sr_gallery_4&ga_search_query=khaki%2Bpants&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=3

    Good luck!

  9. Agree about age-appropriateness. Accidentally bought skinny pink cords for my 3 yr old and I hate them (though she loves them because they’re pink). Also, the only thing that should be written on the butt of my daughter’s pants is STINKY!!

  10. Lands End is always our first choice, and occasionally LL Bean — but they don’t have girls clothes as much as Lands End.

I also hate the skinny pants as uniform pants. We have an any kind of khaki bottoms for our uniform and I wish there was a line in there about not form fitting. And we have to tuck our polo shirt in, which looks just ridiculous with skinny pants.

  11. i go to http://www.frenchtoast.com it has super cute uniforms and they fit my kiddo very well, but wal-mart and childrens place are also really good for the non skinny jeans

  12. Children’s Place had good deals on cargos and so did Old Navy….

  13. I agree!! Society is trying to rush kids to grow up and the tweens are slowly coming down to the 5-8 year olds. It’s too sexualized if you ask me!

  14. I chime in with Walmart. They tend to have a good selection there. And around the time school started I saw Kmart had some uniform clothing as well. This skinny jeans do not look to comfy at all. I would feel uncomfortable in them so I can imagine what a child feels. I agree with you, some clothing made for kids is just not age appropriate. Good luck on your clothing hunt.

  15. Scatch that they don’t have her size

  16. Our local WalMart carries uniform pants. Until this year, when my sons moved up to middles school and a private school, I’d buy those because they were cheap. The girl’s versions appear to be typical straight leg or pleated pants.

Clothing is the ONE thing that I would poke my eyes out with sticks if I had girls. The majority of what is available for little girls makes them look much older than they should. Skinny jeans are not appropriate for little girls!

  17. That is insane! Kam has a pair of skinny jeans, but she’s 3 and they are cute on her. I know it’s hard as hell to find decent pants for kids, even my 5YO son is hard!

  18. I feel your pain, but not for the uniform part. While I’d love for our schools to go to uniforms, they aren’t. Our problem was when our SON needed jeans for school and JCPenny had nothing but skinny jeans … for BOYS. OMG can you say fashion disaster???

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers talking about French Toast uniforms so maybe that’s a place to start looking. I think even Old Navy carries uniform style stuff.

  19. I agree with you about the skinny pants and writing on the bottom for little ones. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. It’s just wrong. As for where you can get some age appropriate khaki’s, have you tried Izod or French Toast? They look a little less skinny than what I see hanging on the rack in department stores, but I can’t really say, cuz my girl is in a 2T.

  20. Ugh! I am kinda glad I am having another boy. It is getting harder and harder to find little girl clothes made for little girls. The skinny jeans for boys would work for my son because he is soooo skinny and nothing fits him, but the fact that he is wearing “skinny” jeans weirds me out. Those Zulily shorts by Hazel are adorable!

  21. Those shorts are cute! I hate to say it, but you may have better luck in the boys section. :(

  22. I was going to say the same thing as Alli, buy her pants in the boy section. If you’re selective enough, you will be more likely to find some pants that are “unisex” in this section of the store. You can also try an online store Cookies Kids. They sell uniform style clothing and seem to be a popular shopping site. Good luck.

  23. Can you buy boy pants for her? Is that an option? I had to buy “skinny” pants for my skinny boy and while they fit, they just seem… wrong somehow. And I totally agree with you about fashion the start of destruction of children’s morality.

I love those shorts you got her. Kind of makes me wish I had a girl.

My sister’s kids’ school has uniforms, but they HAVE to buy through a certain place because they all have the school logo on them. It makes them much more expensive.
