Speaking of Dooce…

Someone mentioned her in the big name bloggers, can someone tell me the big deal? Now I support all bloggers, and there are great blogs, ok blogs, cool blogs, weird blogs, etc. but whats the ‘big deal’ about her blog. Just looks like a chick talking about her life. And half the time the comments are shut down and I cant even read the thoughts people had. What am I missing? I like to be in the “know”. Did I miss something great that happened and now I’m catching up?

ps ~not~ hating on Dooce at ALL. Its a sincere question. I’m trying to figure out the magic formula of blogging

  1. I kept hearing about Dooce this and Dooce that, so I finally broke down and went to the blog, even subscribed to it before I checked out the posts, and then I tried to comment on one and they were closed. They were almost all closed! WTH?

  2. Jen says:

I think I read somewhere that her comments get shut after 750? Not sure why but it stinks that when they are closed you can’t even read them.

I have her on my blogroll to check out once in awhile but she doesn’t grab me like some other blogs there do.

  3. SarahHub says:

Did you read her blog today? This is why people (myself included) love her.

By honestly laying her life out for all to see, she makes me laugh and today made me grateful I read her blog.

  4. Stacy says:

She does public speaking and TV appearences. I have seen her a few times. I am a big fan of hers, as well as Motherhood Uncensored. They are strong prolific writers who don’t give a F*** what people think about them, and that takes a great amount of courage. Say what you will, but thats what makes these big mommy bloggers celebrities…. How about that woman, mom2a6pack who sold her kids Xbox on ebay because they were ungrateful and misbehaved? She got a book deal! Its about about public demand, and I guess there’s just alot of demand for her. We should all be so lucky! lol

  5. I don’t get it either. She is very cool and funny and writes well, but so do ALL the bloggers I read!!

  6. Leigh says:

So, I’m looking at starting a mommy blog in a niche group this month (a secular homeschooler for ONE year, due to 100 reasons). When I started looking into how I could make it work, I stumbled on her. I think through one of the blogher adds.

A friend started helping me out on layout/design/advertising/marketing stuff (BORING!), and today he practically was frantic to get ahold of me and ask “What’s the deal with this woman? Why does everyone get worked up for her?” He was actually flabbergasted trying to figure it out, he thought something was wrong with him for “not getting it.” So, you are now the 2nd person that Ive seen ask this question in the last FOUR hours!

(I don’t have an answer now, either, sorry! lol) But, I guess that actually works in her favor too, because here we are, blogging about her on another blog, sending people her way.

  7. She’s making $40,000 a month!?!? How? Do people click on the ads on her blog just to make her money?

  8. Yes, you’re right. I don’t know. Maybe it’s like everyone says — the fact that she was “the first”.

But you’re right. A blogger who isn’t honest shouldn’t be blogging.

  9. admin says:

    But arnt MOST blogs honest?

  10. admin says:

Btw, i was totally scared to say this..i am waiting for the big bad blogger moms to come hunt me down and stick me to the wall for questioning it..LOL. But really, its a sincere question.

oh, stephanie, i LOVE LOVE mamas losin it. Great blog. Now thats a blog worth going back to!!

  11. I enjoy reading Dooce because her blog is honest and funny. I do agree though about the interaction factor — by shutting comments off it makes it hard to feel like you are a part of a community, BUT when she does allow comments there are so many of them that I feel like “why bother” anyway.

She’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but I admire her guts for putting her life out there very honestly — especially her post-partum depression and stay in a hospital for it.

And I guess that with being so honest on her blog, she gets a lot of haters. Lucky for her, she can just shut off the comments when she doesn’t want to hear what people have to say. Not a bad idea — I learned long ago not to listen to the negative! (Now if only I could shut off my mother when she was saying something negative…)

  12. Stephanie says:

Wow, you’re the 1st person to ask what I have been wanting to. I even told my husband the following: I think she is so big because of what she was. The 1st big blogger who got famous because she lost her job because of her blogging. I guess I relate it to loving an artist simply because they were once a legend although their new music is not as good anymore. I, too, read her stuff once in awhile & can’t believe she makes $40,000k/month. I feel like she is now on a stage because of her popularity so I am not sure who I am really reading about so I don’t bother. Anyway, came across you from Mama’s Losing It.

  13. The Mom says:

Totally no bond here either..i do read her, her photos are striking, but maybe it’s her longevity in the game?!

I wonder what it was like to mingle with her at BlogHer?! Anyone?

  14. Sheena says:

Not trying to start an uproar but generally I rarely read a blog if the comments are shut off and I don’t see them commenting on other blogs. She may be a great person but I don’t feel that personal bond because of this.
