Mardi Gras is Over. Sad Face.

I had a wonderful time last week! My friend Blondie (also a Blogger) flew in and stayed with my family all week. I met Blondie/Nicole about 4 years ago online and she is one of my best friends now! I toured her around Mobile, which doesn’t seem that exciting, but she planned her trip during Mardi Gras so there was plenty to do.

I got to take her to her first Mardi Gras Parade, we went to Ruth Chris, Dauphin Island, we stayed out at a hotel one night and went to the movies, and she was insistent on the Southern Food Tour featuring Carrabbas, ChickFilA, and as much sweet tea as she could drink.

It was a pretty gluttonous week. mardi gras mobile

Lynsey (her blog), also one of my best friends, came in and they were my hot dates at the Mystic Stripers Ball.

And while there was a bit of problem with the “Mascots of Southern Style” parade (I believe a tire blew on one float and an axle broke on the other), the whole night was very fun!

SOOOOOOOOOO much better than the Conde Cavaliers Ball from 2012.

(view from my room of a float being escorted out of the route)

Earlier that day we spent about 5 hours getting ready at the W Salon (ask for Mitch!) , went to lunch at this divine little place called Montegos, then scrambled down to our hotel to eat more.

Then we stayed up, drank and danced till the wee hours of the morning.

Of course Lynsey was up at 6am ready to start the day already.

But I forgive her.

Special thanks to my sexy husband for having the courage to escort three ladies to the dance and put up with (and request) the wobble, camera holdings, and bathroom visits.

Till Next Year!

Mobile Mardi Gras Parade Schedule 2013

I bet you think that Mardi Gras started in New Orleans.

It didn’t.

New Orleans would like you to believe that and yes, they have some fantastic floats and parades, which combined with debauchery, nakedness, and alcohol, can be a lot of fun. But Mardi Gras actually started in Mobile, Alabama and the first celebration was in 1703. Mobile actually takes Mardi Gras very seriously and last year Charlotte had an ENTIRE WEEK off of school for it.

*head in hands*

Thankfully this year she just has a few days off which I can handle.

And Chris joined a Krewe! He has some friends at work on one and was invited in and he has been really enjoying it. As a result we are headed to the Mystic Stripers Society Ball in about a week and bringing a couple friends. I am looking forward to the parades, masks, moon pies, and ball gowns. I am also looking forward to the night away from the kids.

And goodness knows I have already eaten my weight in King Cake this year.

Today we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the Mystic Striper Society floats when they opened it up for viewing for all the family members. The theme is “Mascots: Southern Style” and I was VERY impressed with them! That parade is going to be fantastic so I encourage you to attend if you live in or around Mobile.

Only in Alabama: Bail

I realize its been some time since I have done an “Only In Alabama” posting and believe me, its not for lack of photo opps. Its just that sometimes things are SO embarrassing in this city that I don’t want to admit I live here.

At any rate, I could not resist snapping this shot yesterday while we were out at Mardi Gras downtown for the parades.

Look:

Let me get a little closer to this sign….

I have no words.

My child has a holiday yours doesnt.

We have hurricane days over snow days.

We drink Soda instead of Pop.

We track in sand over slush.

Our tea comes with sugar without asking.

And we have holidays y’all don’t have.

Mardi Gras Mask Craft Idea

Fresh off our stint to Bloggers on Bourbon, I had some crafts available at my house (cause we forgot to do them in the whirlwind of our trip) and last night my family settled down to do a “Make a Mardi Gras Mask” session. This is a cheap and easy craft to make with your kids.

Plus, you wont need scissors, so its perfect for that 4-5 year old range.

We purchased:

  • Mardi Gras masks in white and black. You can get (3) for $1.99 at Hobby Lobby
  • Mixed package of feathers (approx $6)
  • Mixed package of glitter (approx $5)
  • Mixed package of glitter glue (approx $3)
  • Glue Sticks (.99)

Don’t forget that Hobby Lobby generally offers a 40% off coupon via their website for 1 item that is regular price.

When you do crafting, the one rule of thumb I have is you cannot be worried about mess.

Mess happens.

Mess is part of what makes crafting fun for kids!

But a tip is to make sure the lid is on tight when you sprinkle glitter…or this could happen:

Niiiiiiiiiice.

I’m pretty sure Chris was trying not to bust a gut when the entire thing dumped open on my mask.

Dad doesn’t have to fill silly making a mask.

It can be a manly one.

With feathers.

And glitter.

And he can write “Daddy-O” on it.

Day #6: Mardi Gras

I have a feeling I wont do all 325 days because I didn’t consider that I don’t like to blog on the weekends. So this may actually be Day #6-#8.

But who’s counting, right?

I am going to do this one as a recent memory…as in yesterday.

Although the birth place of Mardi Gras is here in Mobile (betcha thought it was New Orleans, right?), we went over to the beach to hit up the parade there.

I cant believe it snowed 2 days ago and then yesterday there were people in short sleeves.

I love seeing all the beads and cups flying through the air.

Only In Alabama…..Mardi Gras

This should actually be “Only in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana”, BUT we have one thing you all don’t have. Mardi Gras at Home Depot. You can shop for a hammer and flash for beads at at the same time.

Awesomely Alabama.

I got the Baby!

[private]

Before anyone gets all excited, I am NOT pregnant! LOL!  “I got the Baby” is just a common expression heard around New Orleans this time of year.  Any idea why?

It’s Mardi Gras Season! And the only thing I look forward to more than the day off of work is King Cake….and lots of it!

Still confused?  Wikipedia will explain:

In southern U.S.A., the tradition was brought to the area by colonists from France and Spain. King cake parties in New Orleans are documented back to the eighteenth century.

The king cake of the New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition comes in a number of styles. The most simple, said to be the most traditional, is a ring of twisted bread similar to that used in brioche, also similar to the American cinnamon roll, topped with icing or sugar, usually coloured purple, green, and gold (the traditional Carnival colors) with food colouring. Some varieties have filling inside, the most common being cream cheese followed by praline. Popular bakeries such as Gambino’s, Haydel, and Randazzo, feature original recipes and types of king cakes

In the US Gulf Coast since the 1950s, the most common trinket has been a small plastic baby. Many people say this represents the baby Jesus, tied in to the connection with Epiphany.  It is a common practice in elementary and secondary schools to have king cake parties, usually on a Friday. The person who receives the trinket is required to bring the cake the following week.

Lily on her 3rd Birthday with her King Cake

In other words, King Cake is a sugary piece of heaven.  It is a seasonal dessert, so I generally rationalize my binging by telling myself that I can only get it for a limited time period, so I just HAVE to overload on the stuff.

I’m pretty sure it is my duty as a New Orleanian.

Do you want to throw a King Cake Party at your office or school?  You can purchase a King Cake and have it shipped right to your door.  But, if you get the baby, you are required to send one to ME.

Which I will share…with no one.

Happy Mardi Gras!
