My C section scar…post surgery day 2, day 10

When I found out that I had to have a C section, I was super paranoid. I mean, its MAJOR surgery. Anyone who just passes it off as an “every day” thing doesn’t really take into consideration that they cut open your body, remove organs, take out a baby and put organs back in.

Oh, and for the record, they really do take organs OUT of your body and reattach.

It’s…creepy.

Mucho Respecto to women that do this more than once.

I asked, googled, and looked everywhere to find out about C section scars and recovery. Its different for everyone is the main thing I learned, but I wanted to share mine as it goes along for those with the same paranoia and box full of questions.

This is my C Section cut/scar the day after surgery.

This is 10 days after surgery (today).

——————————–

Btw, those lines are not stretch marks..I have a belly band on and it leaves me with “clothing” lines when I take it off. And of course the dark line is the Linea Nigra, which I got later in pregnancy this time.

I have also already lost 17 pounds. I’ll update again in a week or two.

Now go hug your mother.

A Canadians View on Our Free Health Care

Hello, Nolie here from Nolie’s Place. Trisha had put out a call for guest posts while we wait for her new bundle of joy to join us in this world. I answered but didn’t have a clue what to write about. Then I remembered the time she was not sure if something was wrong but did not want to spend the money to go to the emergency room for nothing. That inspired this post. I hope you enjoy it.

A Canadians View on Our Free Health Care

Canadians are famous for saying to Americans “At least we have free health care”. I know this because I am one of those Canadians. However I am not blind either.

Our health care system is a joke.

Every month approximately half of Tobei’s pay check goes to taxes. These taxes are to cover things like health care, social housing, welfare and many other programs in our beautiful country. If I have an emergency I can go to the hospital or a doctor and not worry about being able to afford it. I can have a baby and not worry about the medical costs. This is awesome. However here is my problem. I can call my doctor for an appointment because I am sick and yet she can not see me for 2 weeks. This doesn’t work. So I can go to a walk in clinic where I get to wait for an average of 4 hours on a good day to see the doctor. My other option is the hospital where I can expect to wait a good 12 hours.

Don’t even get me started on if we need to see a specialist. Take for example my mom, she has been referred to the parkinsons clinic for some testing. The wait list….. 6 FREAKING MONTHS!!! Forget if you need a cat scan unless you are literally dying right there on the spot, again you are looking at months on end on the wait list. Your what could be a minor problem is then a major problem and possibly untreatable by the time it is detected. Totally unacceptable in my opinion.

Do you need surgery?

Well, you better have a lot of patience. Hospitals are having to cut beds left right and centre due to budget shortages. Again you can be waiting months for that surgery. Take my mom for example again. They thought she had a cancerous tumor on her ovary. After about 4 months we get to her surgery date but they have no beds so they reschedule for the next week. Next week comes and they have a bed….. in the freaking hallway.

No room for my mom, no privacy, nothing.

This ladies and gentlemen is what is known as our “health care” in Canada. We don’t even have options for better health care.

This is it, take it or leave it.

How to induce labor naturally

How to induce labor naturally

There are many times during a pregnancy a woman starts to daydream about labor. Around 8 weeks when she is vomiting in the bathroom, 24 weeks when she is sick of not being able to breath and of feeling kick after kick after kick (after kick) and then from week 33 on when the end is in site – but not really.

About that 35th week, generally women start praying to God to please, please go into labor.  Let me assure you that if you go into labor under week 37, chances are your doctor is going to stop the labor and send your butt home. Even if you manage to get one of the following natural labor methods to work, you really don’t want to put your baby at risk by having underdeveloped lungs, so this article is in no way encouraging you to test these methods out unless your in the final week or past due.

But if you are at that week 40 and desperate…here are a few ways that some women swear by to get the contractions going and the baby on its way out the vagina and into your arms.

1) Exercise: No shocker there that exercise can start to induce labor. Just walking around the block for me gives me cramps at this point. But be careful that if you choose to start walking to bring water, don’t go to far from home, and don’t over do it! They use walking up and down the halls at the hospital to get you dilating more, so I could say that this natural labor method is probably one that works if you are close enough. One of the biggest things you don’t want to do is get so exhausted and then go into labor….so keep that in mind. You do need strength.

2) Food: There are two old wives tales about labor…

  • A) One is that natural pineapple or mango can put you into labor. The science behind it is that these fruits contain a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain. Bromelain is rumored to soften the cervix and make it ready for delivery. When I was reading about this, all it did was make me want to eat pineapple…so I bought some! I can assure that while it was yummy, not one contraction did it make.
  • B) The other food rumor is Raspberry Leaf Tea. You can get it at a health food store and while very yummy, its also used a lot to prevent miscarriage and ease pain in the uterus when you do have contractions. I believe this one is more of a prep service for your uterus to help ease pain, but some claim that it helps induce. I drank probably 45 cups of it during my pregnancy with Charlotte and again, no labor as a result. Load it with sugar….good stuff.

3) Pressure Points: There are two main pressure points on your body that are known to pinpoint your uterus. One is the same pressure point between your first finger and thumb called the HOKU and its the point you push when you have a headache (and it works) that is in the webbing of your hand. Instructions to use are to find the point with your alternating hand thumb and forefinger and make circular motions with your thumb on the outside of your hand on that point for 10-15 seconds, while steadying your forefinger on the palm side. Ever the daredevil, I tested this one out and got a contraction. BE VERY CAREFUL. This might actually work.

The second pressure point is about 4 fingerlings above your ankle on the inside of your leg. Its supposed to strengthen weakening contractions. The best way to take advantage of pressure point ways to induce labor, are to go get a massage or an acupuncture, but do it under the permission and guidance of your doctor.

4) Nipple Stimulation: This one sounds fun, right? WRONG. If you read up on it, the entire idea is that nipple stimulation produces oxytocin, which tells your body to go into labor. You are supposed to stimulate one side at a time, but rubbing in circular motion emulating a baby sucking on your breast, for 15 minute intervals, switching sides, and break for 5 minutes in between. Some sites say stimulate for 5 minutes, not 15, but either way, 5…15…..I say get some lanolin before going this route. It sounds like a very desperate measure that will only lead to sore nipples.

5) Castor Oil: Oh, goodness..you know you are in for it if you get this far. The idea is to take 2tsp of castor oil, mix with OJ and down it like a vodka martini. Because Castor oil is a stimulant for your intestines, it can make you cramp (and crap) and therefore cause your uterus to kick in. There are mixed feelings about this all over the net, but I have two points to make. One is that it can make you very dehydrated and two it can make for a long, long night in the bathroom. I am not sure, even if you manage to produce labor, you will really want to go and alternate between having to go and having to deliver. I cant find a doctor online that approves of this.

6) Sex: This is the biggie and most doctors DO recommend this one. First, you should have an orgasm and two, it should include sperm (so basically the old solo routine wont cut it). They say the best way to get a baby out is the same way it went in. Sperm does, in fact, soften the cervix with prostaglandins and can start labor, but only if you are further down the road and your body is ready. Consider it the last step and probably the best way to go into labor…provided you can find someone to have sex with this late in the game. I do not have anyone willing to do that for me….so Ill just be over here walking around the block, while eating pineapple, drinking a glass of tea spiked with Castor Oil.

Have you ever found any of these methods worked with your labor?

Prosecuted for Miscarriage…

This is not a Pro-Life/Pro-Choice debate post. I try to stay away from the biggies on my blog, that being one of them. But my sister shared this article on facebook and I found it a terribly interesting topic for discussion.

Most states have enacted their own personal state feelings on abortion procedures, whether its banning them from happening, slapping age or other restrictions, or making it completely open between a dr and a patient, but have you heard of the “foetal homicide laws” that 38 states have?

Basically the gist of it is that the law was put into place to charge people who incidentally murdered fetus’ by their actions in late term pregnancy..ie abuse, car accident, etc. But the laws are being used to prosecute women whose actions during their pregnancy result in a death of their unborn child, i.e. miscarriage. For example, a woman addicted to drugs who has a baby that ultimately dies shortly after its born or in utero.  In that case, its a very interesting discussion regarding her drug use versus the babys rights, but the article also posts this disturbing scenario:

In one case, a woman’s unborn baby was diagnosed with Down’s syndrome and she declined the doctor’s suggestion to abort. Her baby died after a premature birth and six months later she was arrested at home and retroactively charged with “chemical endangerment” during pregnancy. She denied taking drugs and there was no evidence, but she faces 10 years behind bars.

I am just shocked that there are states like South Carolina pursuing to put women in prison for a miscarriage.

In one way my thought process, which thinks very legally, knows it cant have its cake and eat it too. I realize if you can charge someone for abusing a pregnant woman and ultimately causing what will be deemed a prosecutable death, that the women themselves open themselves up to the same accountability.

In the other way I wonder if this is a massive slippery slope that no one wants to pursue.

What would constitute “endangerment to an unborn child”? Staying up late? Quitting Pre-natal pills? A glass of wine? Taking a Tylenol PM? Wearing heels and falling down in them? I also think it might be a way for pregnant-but-addicted women to choose abortion early on in a pregnancy, which is legal, over carrying a baby to full term and risk homicide charges.

What do you think….charge women for their actions during pregnancy or no?

Gummy Prenatals

I went on Prenatal pill strike early on in my pregnancy.

Same when I was pregnant with Charlotte.

I could not STAND those freaking horse pills. But I have been taking these Gummy Vitafusion Prenatals (you can snag at Target) for a few weeks and they are the EASIEST prenatals ever. It also makes me feel less guilty since I was a bad pregnant lady for many weeks.

Actually, I am kinda thinking that if they made all drugs in gummy, life would be perfect.

Gummy Tylenol…

Gummy Vicodin…

Gummy Ambien CR…

Oh, the possibilities.

~Trisha

PS Not that I should have to say this, but please consult your Dr. on whatever prenatals you need or not need to take. Im not a Dr.  I’m just someone enjoying not taking a deep breath and drinking a glass of water to get one pill down.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

Back in college we had a choice on which foreign language we could take, but it had to be 8 credits worth. That meant either 3 classes of regular language (like Spanish, French, etc) or just two of Sign Language. I opted for sign language.

It ended up being a really cool language to learn and for a long time I really enjoyed practicing and going on events that allowed me to use sign language. I know plenty of it has fallen away. Just like all foreign languages, it has a ton of rules in how you sign and includes quite a few facial expressions as well.

You cannot be shy in sign class.

I can still dot he alphabet and a lot of basic things, but considering I have been out of college 10 years, that’s as far as it goes.

Now May is better hearing and speech month. Hearing loss affects over 34 million Americans, with 3 million of those being children. For more information about Better Hearing and Speech month including information on hearing loss, you can check out the ASHA:

Toddler found drunk

Toddler found drunk? Say WHAT?

A mother from Houston was recently thrown in jail when her ONE YEAR OLD was found drunk on Four Loko.

Four Loko is an alcoholic energy drink. According to the police, Lashwanda Allen said she was drunk and went to sleep and when she woke up, her 1 year child was holding the empty can.

It was a neighbor that found Ms. Allen wandering around the hallways of her apartment. When that person asked where the kids were, she said they were inside the apartment drunk. The four month old was  found hanging off the bed wrapped in sheets (turning blue) and the 1 year old was wandering around the apartment parking lot legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .09.

The bond of the mother is a whopping 2K.

Um. Wow?
