The Odd Life of Timothy Green Review

This past year I have seen a handful of movies in the the theater and most of them have been kid related. It’s pretty hard for a family of four with one under the age of 2, to ever get to a screening so as parents we generally end up taking Charlotte on her own. And even though I tried and tried, we never did make it to the new 2012 Disney Movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green when it was out. So recently when I had a chance to sit down with my family and watch it, I was excited to see a movie I hadn’t seen yet and was interested in. Truth be told, I knew nothing about this movie other than the previews.

Here is a preview in case you haven’t had a chance to see it:

What is The Odd Life of Timothy Green About?

Director/writer Peter Hedges brings enchantment to the screen with The Odd Life of Timothy Green, an inspiring, magical story about a happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim — and their small town of Stanleyville — learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts. — (C) Disney

My Thoughts:

I got two things out of this kid movie. The first thing I said to my husband when it was over was “I am not sure the lesson?” Generally I find that Disney movies have a very clear cut lesson to them and I didn’t find it right away.  That was probably just me looking for the ultimate ending when in fact this movie was nothing more than a feel good flick meant for a family to sit, enjoy the story, and smile.  The second was that the “life is what you make of it” message was loud and clear and Timothy could not have been more likeable- as an actor and as a movie.

In fact, I found the acting pretty good and the movie done in a way that left my whole family happy at the end. And I’ll admit, I did shed a few tears when Timothy left and the sadness this family had to endure after so much heartache, which meant to me that the movie had enough stick to make it worth the watch.

Timothy Green Movie

We LOVE Disney Movies!

As the movie progressed you started to realize he was losing his leaves accomplishing each task his parents had wished him to be. I think at that point I saw where this was heading and I had to shake off and enjoy what was clearly a sugar coated Disney Treat.

My favorite scene were the ones where Timothy Green (actor CJ Adams) and Uncle Bub (M Emmet Walsh) had dialogue. They felt natural and very much like a family- no matter how Timothy arrived.

Where to buy Timothy Green:

The Odd Life of Timothy Green was available starting December 4th and you can buy it on Amazon or one of your local retailers. It is a perfect addition to a family collection that contains heartwarming safe flicks that everyone can enjoy without worrying in regards to context. What your family can take away from this movie is simply tolerance and finding that the simple things in life are worth noting.

Charlottes BRAVE adventure

Last week Charlotte was in VBS and they took the kids to see BRAVE on Friday. It may have been the first Disney movie in her entire life I didn’t get to take her too first. Now I am sitting here pondering whether or not my husband and I should make ti a date night movie, because I want to see it while its in the theater myself!

I asked Charlotte if I would like the movie and she said “Oh, YES! You will love it!”

To celebrate the new movie Brave, Mattel is bringing to life Merida, a Scottish royal whose family has a mysterious curse that she must save them from.

From Fandango:

An impetuous princess discovers that her reckless choice has put both her family and her father’s kingdom in peril in this animated adventure from Pixar films. As a toddler, Merida (voice of Kelly MacDonald) saw her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly), do battle with one of the fiercest animals in the kingdom — a horribly scarred hulk of a bear named Mordu. Though Fergus lost his leg defending his family, Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), managed to escape the beast before it vanished back into the forest. Years later, Merida has grown up to become not just a skilled archer, but also a beautiful princess who inspires a competition among the eligible bachelors in the land. But Merida has little interest in getting married, and the harder her mother pushes the issue, the more fiercely she resists it. When the tournament for her hand gets under way and a deep divide opens between mother and daughter, Merida makes a wish that threatens the future of both her family and the entire kingdom. Now, with only a brief window of time to set things right, Merida must summon the courage to atone for her mistake and prevent a past tragedy from destroying any hope for a peaceful future.

Charlotte playing BRAVE:

I asked Charlotte to tell me a story about Merida…

Charlotte’s Adventure:

One day Merida went on a journey and found blue people.. They lead her to a place that shows her how to get back home. She rides her horse on adventures. She discovers a new world. She goes into a forest. She finds new animals and things. She discovers a new world beside her. In the forest she brings her weapons just in case there is any animals that can hurt her.

She is not allowed to put her weapons on the table in the castle. She has to get up early in the morning because her mom tells her. She has to listen to her mom.”

(I like where this is headed..lol)

Toys Shown:

Brave Gem Styling Merida doll gives girls the chance to decorate Merida’s signature blue gown or red hair with “gems.” They can even flip her reversible cape to reveal a beautiful sparkly print. $20.99, Age: 3+

Brave Castle & Forest Playset brings Merida’s magical world comes to life. When closed the play set is outdoor “forest” where Merida can venture with Angus. Open the play set to play out Merida’s life within the kingdom. $26.99, Age: 3+

Thoughts: The toys are cute, clearly great items for kids to continue the adventure at home. My only issue, and this happens with a ton of toys of this type of caliber, is that when you snap in pieces (like the bed posts, castle steps, etc) they tend to unsnap constantly. That being said, its only $26.99 and has a lot of fun involved for the imaginative child. It just personally drive me nuts to keep having to resnap these items over and over again.

Did they like it?

Movies to see this Year

There are tons of Movies to see this year and with 2011 barely heating up, we already see some fabulous contenders for “must sees” in the box office.Last year some of my favorite movies were The Social Network (which I actually just saw but came out last year), Inception (Leo!), and Tangled.

Here are a few cant miss:

Movies to see this year

Rango

Release Date: March 4th

Leave it to good old Johnny Depp to bring life into Rango. I watched a making of the movie and literally the actors act out the scenes while speaking in them.

[learn_more caption="Plot" state="open"]A chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it. [/learn_more]

Watch trailer and clips here.

The Adjustment Bureau

release date: March 4th

Featuring mega star Matt Damon, the premise of this movie is based on a futuristic novel that suggests reality is nothing more than an illusion. I agree.

Sucker Punch

Starts: March 25

I have already seen the commercials for this must see movie. But its kinda must see for men since most of the women are scantily clad. This is an action/fantasy film that takes place in the mind of a mental patient. Vanessa Hudgens appears.

Water for Elephants

Appearing: April 22nd

Water for Elephants was an absolutely fabulous novel that was written around a vet for the circus. While I am sure the movie is going to have a hard time topping the already spectacular book, it doesn’t hurt that Robert Pattison will be in it.

The Tree of Life

Appearing: May 27th

Heading into the box office in time for Memorial Day, the Tree of life is about a family of 3 boys in the 1950′s, whose eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence. Brad Pitt and Sean Pean are sure to bring a serious performance.

Cowboys and Aliens

Appearing: July 29th

I guess this is a different plot than Cowboys and Indians! This movie that takes place in 1870 puts Cowboys and Aliens against each other. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig make it worth the attend.

[box type="info"]A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.[/box]

Anonymous

Appearing: Sept 30th

Not so easy to find additional material on this movie, but its a thriller about who actually wrote Shakespeare’s plays.

It’s Complicated (closed)

*all three winners have been notified via email as of 12/21*

In order to celebrate the new movie ‘It’s Complicated‘ and its premiere on Christmas Day, we wanted to bring you some great information about the movie and how you can win a few prizes as well! I love when movies come out over the holidays because its a fun thing to do right after you are too full to move from holiday meals.

Now I have never been divorced. Yet.

But I can completely understand how Meryl Streeps character and Alex Baldwins character start finding each other again after years of being a part.  Although I wont say that Alicia shares that sentiment just a month away from her divorce. (yeah, divorce party in New Orleans in 3 weeks~!)

Don’t forget to Fan on Facebook!

I am super excited to see Steve Martin pop back up in a movie!

I love him.

Genre:                                                Comedy

Cast:                                                   Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin

Written & Directed by:                 Nancy Meyers

Produced by:                                   Nancy Meyers, Scott Rudin

Writer/director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday) directs Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in It’s Complicated, a comedy about love, divorce and everything in between.

Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has—after a decade of divorce—an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin).  But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated.  An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable—an affair.  With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam (Martin), an architect hired to remodel Jane’s kitchen.  Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he’s become part of a love triangle.

Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around?  It’s…complicated.  www.itscomplicatedmovie.com

Hotel for Dogs DVD, 3 Winners 5/4 CLOSED

We hardly make it to the movies around here. I see a new movie only when it hits the DVD stands……….6 months after its been out. But this time, I was able to see Hotel for Dogs before it hit the stands and felt privileged! HA!

Now I’m not a huge fan of dogs overall. Heck, you already know that with as many cats as I have in my house, right? But this weekend I saw a puppy that made my heart melt. Too bad you have to take dogs for walks and all that. But since Charlotte’s never going to get a dog till she is 18 and moved out, the closest she can come is watching movies with them.

hotelfordogs

Here is a basic synopsis of the movie by IMDB:

Animals are strictly forbidden at Andi and her little brother Bruce’s foster home. But for Friday, the adorable dog they secretly care for, they’re ready to risk everything. They finally find him an ideal shelter, a huge abandoned hotel that Bruce transforms thanks to his engineering genius. In what has become an incredible paradise for dogs, Friday is soon joined by all kinds of furry friends, so many in fact that their barks alert the neighbors…and the local pound, who can’t understand the disappearance of all the stray dogs. Andi and Bruce will have to call on all their friends and all their imagination to stop the hotel’s secret from being discovered.

I honestly never expect much from kids movies. They are made for kids after all, so the plots need to be simple, yet entertaining. Surprisingly, this movie was darling. We have watched it about three times since it came in our house and I kid you not when I say my husband TEARED UP AT THE END!!!!!!!!!! (OK, i did too) Charlotte enjoyed the dogs, we enjoyed the message, and it was an all around perfect family flick. And anything to save me from another episode of Max and Ruby is completely welcome.

I was just on the website and its pretty interactive. It “retrieves” the site and “fetches” the content. LOL! If you own a dog, head over and Make your Dog a Star by creating a custom poster or DVD cover with your dog right on it.
