Man too tall to fly stood for 2.5 hours of flight time.

Brooks Anderson, a 6’7″ tall man, was forced to stand for 2.5 hours of plane time when he arrived for his flight heading to Florida for a Christmas vacation.

“I was in an aisle seat and I clearly didn’t fit into the seat at all,” he said. “I couldn’t even stuff myself in there.”

he told ABC News.

Placed in the back, the flight attendants wouldnt let him sit with his knees in the aisle. They asked other passangers to change seats with him in the exit aisle, which as you know usually has larger leg room, but no one would change.

Seriously people? Pathetic.

He stated that his choice was either to spend the time with his knees painful crammed into the tray in front of him or standing and dodging those that were going to the restroom. The airline that acted as a Scrooge this holiday for one passenger?

Spirit.

Ironic.

Practical Christmas Gifts..who wants those?

Practical Christmas Gifts are all the rage nearly every year, and I suppose if no one is going to buy me an Audi A8, a pack of razors or a box of laundry detergent would probably do just fine. Then again, Im still a believer in the gift card or busting out a 6 pack myself.

But its the thought that counts in the holiday season and some online receivers are sharing what they got from the sweet to the mindful.

1) Christmas Cookies!

Yum, would turn down a bundle of those!? In fact, we have our homemade Christmas cookies sitting on a plate, complete with a side of some carrots, for Santa and his reindeer right now.

Twenty-five years ago, I was a young divorced mother of two trying to make ends meet with little financial help from my ex. Although I had to charge the gifts for my children as I didn’t have extra cash, buying ingredients for baking was out of the question. A co-worker whom I was good friends with knew my situation, and came into work one day with a gift from him and his wife: a huge glass canister with a gorgeous Christmas tree on the front, filled to the top with every kind of cookie you can imagine. Yes, I cried.

2) A plane Ticket

Although the entire coast lines are full of delays or cancellations, a plane ticket is something that will never go unused. You can make mine out to Tahiti.
A plane ticket from my son Devin to go visit my grandchildren … Priceless.
—- Donna, Bunker Hill, Ill.

3) Knowledge

This sounds like something a parent would tell a child…here is some practical advise for Christmas. Boring! But it could be interesting if you kept a journal and one day gave it to your child as they were older. I just dont have the stamina to keep up with it.
I gave up the baby book about the 9th day my daughter was alive.
In 1972, when I was 12 years old, I received a brand-new set of the World Book Encyclopedia. My mom sold World Book and had worked hard to sell enough to win a set. I was an avid reader. In the time before the Internet, this was the fastest way to access information and learn about the world around us. I will never forget the excitement of finding these wonderful books on Christmas morning, and the work my mom did in order to get them for me.

4) A family heirloom

Again, nothing that I have, but I should keep something a really really long time and give it to Charlotte one day before I live. I think by default that makes it an heirloom.
My husband and daughter had my mother’s diamond ring reset for me. It was a total surprise. My mother passed away in 1977, and I had kept her rings in a safe deposit since that time. On Christmas morning with my 95-year-old father present, they gave me a wrapped ring box. When I opened it, all I could think was ‘Holy God, how will we ever pay for this?’ They then told me what they had done, my dad started to cry, and of course I cried. It was a wonderful surprise.

5) Christmas Photo Memories

You can do some really great things online now a days with Christmas Photo Memories. Whether its photobooks or online greetings that you can add video and sound to, photo memories make the best practical gift of all reaching across the miles.
I’ve received many nice gifts, but the one that stands out is a photo album that my daughter made of my childhood years. I keep it by my bedside and look at it often. It is priceless to me, not only because it reminds me of my childhood, but that it was made with love by someone I love very much.

You can see more practical and sentimental memories here.

Have you ever received or given a gift that fell into this category? I get socks and underwear every year…as long as its not a thong, I guess it counts.

Unique Holiday Traditions

Our family doesn’t have a ton of unique holiday traditions, but there are tons of people out there that celebrate with a laugh or a warm hearted tradition. I am so excited Christmas is tomorrow I cant stand it! I have to do one last trip to Toys R US (I know, I’m a glutton for punishment) but thats it.

All done!

So here are a few unique holiday traditions that are celebrated out there:

1) Food!

So man people have a food tradition. From gingerbread house decorations to breaking bread, there are so many ways you can celebrate with food on a holiday.

Christmas Day Eve was and still is a fast day in our family of 14. Only three of us left, but supper always consisted of a pasta with sardines or anchovies, a green olive salad with sweet red onions and of course a red or white wine. Italian cookies were dessert.
—- Joseph Mancuso, Erie, Buffalo, N.Y.
In our house, we grab Pizza on Christmas Eve because of all the baking and cooking that goes on on Christmas Day. Its a time for everyone to get a break. I like $5 pizzas from Little Caesars and a great big coke!
(btw, my favorite go to recipe site for coming up with a meal plan for the holidays? www.food.com )

2) New Fangled Christmas Exchanges

Everyone in the family brings a few gifts to Christmas dinner. All gifts are placed in the center of the room. Then the host deals out a deck of playing cards with each family member getting 3-4 cards depending on the number of family members in attendance. The host takes a second deck of cards and begins calling out the cards. As your card is called you choose a gift, but don’t open it. Once all gifts are chosen, each player who still has a card can then steal from those that have gifts, but they must say, “Ain’t it a shame.”
Each player must end up with at least 1 gift. Once all the cards have been called, the presents are opened, starting with the eldest family member. After all the presents are opened, the trading begins. Many times the same ugly nutcracker appears year after year and is disguised in fancy wrapping paper.
—- Carole, Mays Landing, N.J.
We are doing something similar at both of our parents house this year. We are having a “dirty santa” exchange and at one house are bringing a present that is $10 and under and one $20 and under. We all get a number and the person w/ the lowest number pulls first and opens. The second can steal their present or open a new one. The person with the highest number pretty much has their pick of all the presents or the last one. Last year I ended up with a fly swatter.
Seriously.

3) Christmas in a unique location

My fiancee and I always spend the week of Christmas at the beach in Destin, Fla. It’s a great way to reconnect and avoid the stress of family and parties. We have Christmas dinner at a wonderful restaurant every year. So there is no cooking or cleaning. Nothing all week but peace, quite, privacy and the best sunsets ever.
—- Anonymous, Dallas

This year I actually WILL be on the beach. My in laws rented a beach house for Christmas weekend. Its local (we all live on the panhandle) but we will be celebrating in sand. Fun!

Are there any particular traditions you have this year?
