Beauty is only skin and skinny deep

I’m not gonna lie..I love beautiful things.

I love makeup, pretty dresses, and sparkle. But beauty is far more than skin, or skinny, deep. And while anything can be made on the surface shiny, what really makes a glow is self confidence and embracing who we are as unique individuals.

Now as a parents we have a duty and a responsibility to help our kids grow into strong leaders that love who they are. But more than that, we have a chance to make a difference in not only own child’s life, but the lives of other children, and collectively help them grow into productive and confident adults that know their self worth.

Dove, a leader in embracing beauty of all kinds, as launched an initiative that encourages families and individuals to get involved in the lives of a young person by pledging to spend atleast one hour with them building up who they are in a one on one scenario.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our own lives and the routine of all of our children, that we can easily bypass those face to face moments that turn into experiences that children remember and ultimately live through them.

Dove Says:

Research shows a link between a mother’s influence and her daughter’s ideas about health and body confidence. If mothers can become more aware of their attitudes towards their own bodies and those of their daughters, they can help their daughters stand up to the powerful influences in our culture that undermine their own sense of beauty and self‑worth.

What Dove is encouraging adults everywhere to do, especially you moms with your children, is to take some time out of your day during the Dove Self-Esteem Weekend this October 21st-23rd and participate in a self-esteem building activity with your daughter.

A few ideas are:

  • Inspiration Board
Collect articles, magazine tear-outs and news clippings that represent issues surrounding self-esteem. Create a collage of positive messages and images, and keep it in a visible place as both an inspiration board and a reminder of how individuality makes everyone beautiful.
  • Self-Esteem Scavenger Hunt
You can complete this activity right in your own home or take it on the road and expand it. Use the list of scavenger hunt clues below, or make your own and set a time limit to find all of the items and fulfill all of the tasks. Invite friends or family members to participate for double the fun.
  • • Find a photo of when you were happy or acting silly
    • Clip a headline that mentions a woman making the news in science, math or politics
    • Sing your favorite song lyric
Unearth a favorite birthday card you received
    • Write a thank-you note to a parent, mentor or teacher
    • Call a relative you haven’t spoken to in a while
    • Perform a random act of kindness
    • Give someone a compliment in person, face-to-face
    • Discover an interesting fact about your parent(s) that you didn’t know before
    • Ask a parent, mentor or teacher what life was like when they were your age.

This month I am pledging  to spend some one on one time with my own daughter and help her feel good about who she is.

There will be plenty of people to bring her down in her life; her friends, boys, TV, magazines, and her own hormones. What I have to do now is give her the skills in those moments to cope with who she is and the confidence to realize that she can overcome her own thoughts to be who she wants to be….

5 Must Have Pieces of Fitness Equipment

5 Must Have Pieces of Fitness Equipment

We all know that having a pile of unused fitness gear lying around not only is a pain because of the clutter it actually hinders our chances of getting motivated by taunting us and reminding us of our failures.   The following 5 pieces of equipment are small enough to be tucked away and pulled out for workouts and fun enough that they won’t ever get banished to the basement.

Jump rope – It’s not just for little kids.  Jumping rope is an effective cardio workout, less damaging to joints and also helps strengthen arms and shoulders.  It also is a great way to work on coordination and balance.   Jumping rope is also a great workout for all levels of fitness.

Interval Timer – I never saw the value in an interval timer until I got more serious about fitness.  It’s a great thing to have on hand if you are doing circuit training, jump rope, running and so much more.  In a pinch it makes a great egg timer too.

Yoga Mat – A yoga mat is something everyone should have on hand.  It’s not just for yoga anymore.  Use a Yoga mat for pre workout stretches, while jumping rope to add a bit of extra cushion, yoga, Pilates and more.

A good pair of shoes – Unless you are into barefoot workouts like the Ugifit, Yoga or Pilates having a good pair of shoes is an absolute necessity.  I am guilty of going cheap or buying shoes on clearance not realizing that they were last year’s shoes or even older making the cushioning brittle and weak.  I paid for my mistake with joint pain and injuries.  I’m going to save you from the same fate by offering this advice.  Go out to your local fitness store try on a selection of shoes suited to the type of workout that you are planning.  Pick the pair that is the most comfortable, jump in them, and run a couple of laps around the store.  You’ll feel like a fool, but you’ll thank me later.

You – Your body and its weight is a great piece of equipment.  By using your own weight as resistance you can do a variety of workouts like Zumba, yoga, and circuit training without ever having to buy anything.  One of my favorite workouts to follow is BodyRockTV.  Every day she puts up a new or old video for you to try, diet tips and more.  Most of the workouts require no equipment and I tell you, looking at her physique will motivate you to get up off the couch.  There are many of these types of workouts online and with a little research you can find the one that is right for you.

There are so many different fitness options out there; these are just a few of my favorites.  You have to find the workout and equipment that suits your needs.  These are ones I found keep me interested and none of them broke the bank or cluttered up my house.  Before starting any workout it’s a good idea to discuss it with your physician.

I would love to know what your favorite workout or piece of equipment is.

Towel Swan Tutorial: Easy!

How to make a Towel Swan (Tutorial)

The towel swan is one of the easiest towel animals to create.

I like to make two and place them nose to nose on our guest bed whenever a couple comes to visit.

You will need:

  • 1 bath towel or sheet
  • Sunglasses (optional)

Step 1:

Lay out the bath towel horizontally then fold the top two corners down to meet at the center

Step 2: Press the diagonal folds flat then roll the towel tightly along the diagonal edge. It’s easiest to do this one side at a time.

Step 3: Once both diagonal sides are tightly rolled, flip the shape over

Step 4: Bend the rolled point to form a curved neck. Use a lot of pressure (sit on it if you have to!) so it will stay positioned.

Step 5: Twist and “fluff” the tail to create the illusion of wings.

Enjoy your new feathered friend!

If you’re only making one you might want to add sunglasses for a fun effect. If you are making two, place them nose-to-nose for an elegant look. Want more towel animal tutorials?
