How to make a flip book for your toddler

This week I was tasked with the challenge to find a creative use for my Fellowes laminator. Pretty much, 900 things ran through my head. From laminating everything in the baby box (cards, bracelets, mementos) to keep them safe over the long years, to  categorizing and laminating all of Charlotte’s drawings from Pre-K on that are sitting in a box gathering dust. Goodness knows they are starting to get some strain.

But with P getting ready to be 1 year old next Thursday, I wanted to make him something that would not only be helpful to his growth and development, but also showcase the love our family has for him.

What you need to create a flip book

  • pictures
  • Fellowes Laminator
  • Lamination sheets for the size photo you are covering
  • printer paper
  • markers/pens
  • ribbon
  • hole punch

Few things to note: When picking out lamination sheets, there are several kinds of ‘mil’. You usually only need 3mil, which is what I used here, for photos. If you are going to protect something larger or more long term, you may need to find stronger sheets to cover your photos. the “mil” is how thick the sheet is. My laminator machine does 3, 4, and 5 mil.

Instructions for your DIY Toddler Flip Book!

1) Print your pictures! I ran to the store this morning and printed pictures right on a machine that spits them out immediately. They were 25cent a print and looked pretty nice. It’s hard to remember since we do things so much digitally to get this done, but its smart to print your photos monthly or put them in a photo book. If you ever lose your computer or digital files you will have wished you did this! I have a computer under my desk that was hit by a virus in June and I can only pray that the photos will be recoverable.

2) Decide the type of book you are making. I made two kinds. In one book I wrote a little story and included family photos:

in the other, I created more flash cards with words to read to Phoenyx.

In this instance below, I added a leaf and laminated it. I was able to do this with several outdoor items including flowers, grass, and types of leaves. Because the item is more raised than a flat photo, I ran it through once and then turned it around and ran it through again in the opposite direction. (top to bottom, than bottom to top to seal it)

3) The lamination is easy. Just insert your pictures between the lamination pages.

Then put through the machine.

In seconds, it spits out the other side ready for what ever baby drool your toddler wants to put on it.

4) Use a hole punch to put a hole in the corner of each sheet you created.

4) You can either use a loose ribbon to secure the pages together or purchase a key ring for long term use. I had ribbon available, so I chose that route and double knotted the ribbon.

Book complete!

If you don’t have a lamination machine and need one (there really are a million uses for one…and truth be told, its super fun to laminate), check out this deal:

Are you a pool owner?

While summer may be coming to an end with school on the horizon (WOOT WOOT!), there is still plenty of time to enjoy some outdoor fun. And whether or not you can get in your pool during the fall or winter is irrelevant to it’s maintenance. Its absolutely year round maintenance…even if summer isn’t on the mind.

Now we all know someone with a pool.  In my family it is my dads house. Owning a pool is one of the small joys of home ownership but comes with plenty of responsibility as well. I cannot tell you how many times we beg my husband to let us install even an above ground one and he just hates them.  Pools have high electricity and high water bills, but what he really hates is keeping it clean.  The one year we did do an above ground, no matter what we did, it turned green or had debris in it all the time, we just couldn’t keep up.

(At the time I didn’t realize there was this Turbo Turtle to help! I am going to start working on him for next year!)

While I cannot help you with the bills and how to keep them down, one thing you shouldn’t have to worry about is how to keep your pool clean- especially when it’s a larger in ground pool. And as summer does fade and the warmth goes away, the last thing you want to have to do is stand out in 50 degree weather to try and make sure the water is balanced.  Luckily there are products out there that can really make your life easier and the pool in constant sparkling ready position!

Chances are you have heard of the Polaris. The Polaris is a household name amongst pool cleaners and for a reason. But if for some reason you are not up to date on the newest cleaners, here is some very valuable information on one of the best currently on the market:

Polaris 3900 Sport

Polaris 3900 Sport Review

Pretty snazzy, right?

As a long time Polaris owner,  I was pleased that my dad was willing to help me test out a new Polaris! As a family we all enjoy his house during the spring and summer months and know how hard he works to keep his pool safe and clean for all of us. Polaris was kind enough to send him the newest sport model to test out in his pool and get an opinion of a long time pool owner. To make it easy, I sent him some questions after he had installed and had it running a few weeks.

Interview with Dad:

1) What model/how long have you owned a Polaris?

We have owned our old one for 6 years. I believe it is a Polaris 180.

Here is a picture of our older one:

Polaris 180 review

2) How big is your current pool?

Our pool is 35,000 gallons!

3) Was the new Polaris 3900 easy to put together?

Yes! It took less than 10 minutes from start to finish.

4) Can you tell me if you have experienced any storms that have required it to work extra hard? Did it live up to your expectations?

We had a small storm during its testing and I noticed that the new Polaris was able to clean pool quicker and pick up larger debris than our past model.

5) What are the differences between your last cleaner and this one?

The Polaris 3900 one seems to be able to climb side walls better, move smoother , has larger debris collecting hole and larger debris container which means it doesn’t have to cleaned out as often. This is a really helpful feature for pool owners.

6) Have you experienced any issues w/ the Polaris 3900?

Yes. Once once it was out of balance and move only in the seem circular location. Once the water propulsion tube was adjusted it corrected. Regarding my older Polaris, I have also changed wheels, lines and most of the other parts over the past 6 years to upkeep its life.

7) What is one thing you like and one thing that you would improve?

I like the larger debris collection hole, large debris collection bag, the fact it climbs the walls. I also like it’s cool new modern look.

8) Would you recommend this cleaner to your neighbors?

Yes, we love it!

My dad also provided video of the Polaris 3900.

Thank you so much to my dad for working with me on this review to help other pool owners. Polaris was provided by Polaris.

Make Something Astrobright: How to make a paper flower

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Astrobrights Papers by Neenah Paper for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Around here, we are pretty crafty. Like super crafty. We make tutus…..

and tutu hair bow holders..

and fairy wands…

You get the point.

So when we received this very colorful pack of AstroBrights papers the other day, I challenged my daughter Charlotte to make something “back to school”.

Here are the results: You may ask what a flowers has to do with “back to school” and she said it was a back to school present for the teacher!

What a sweet girl she is!

To make the flower like she did (or a whole bouquet with the 23 colors that come in the AstroBrights paper pack), just fold your paper like a fan, stack on each other, secure with a twist tie or pipe cleaner, and then crinkle out.

I asked her where she learned how to make such a beautiful flower and she said HER TEACHER!

A very easy and safe project indeed!

About AstroBrights Paper

AstroBrights Papers come in 23 bright colors, so your bright ideas always get attention. And they’re perfect for projects at home, school or the office. Stand out from the crowd — choose a lively AstroBrights Papers for your next brochure, invitation, flyer, announcement or craft project. AstroBrights Paper is about creativity and getting noticed. We provide a bold color canvas because we believe ideas are important, thoughts aren’t shy and we are not afraid to stand out from the crowd.

Give a Brighter Year

You can also help give your local school a great start by entering the “Give a Brighter Year” sweepstakes that would give $30,000 in cash and supplies to your school!!! Can you imagine? Just head over to facebook and enter! The sweepstakes ends on September 10th and I made sure I entered Charlotte’s school. With funding so low in the education system, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to perhaps be a winner for her and her teachers.

How you can participate!

Make Something Astrobright

Now its your turn to make something Astrobright! Get together your scissors, tape, astrobright paper and head over to their facebook page to check out how your imagination can meet winning! Right now there is a contest to show them your paper flowers (surely you can come up with something as cute as my 7 year old did, right?) and win $200! WOOT WOOT!

Now I think Charlotte did a fantastic job with my challenge…do you craft with your kids?

What kinds of projects to you do with paper?

Do you know any women that should be famous?

Every woman should have a woman in their life that they  1) Look up to and 2) have look up to them.

I’ll be honest here for a minute. My biological mother wasn’t involved in my life…like ever.  And while I am not someone that yearns for female attention as a result, it most definitely made me a better, and more reliable, mother.  I have also been surrounded by great women in my life. Friends like Kim and Lynsey, parenting figures like my stepmom and grandmother,  and my neighbors that I see tirelessly helping out with raising their grandchildren.

With Dove relaunching the “Recognize Her” app on their facebook page, it was a great time for me to ask those around me:

“Who do YOU believe should be famous for being a role model?”

Many women jumped to let me know what women they have in their lives that deserve to be famous!

Toni from Just Stop Screaming told me:

My mother. During her battle with cancer she was still focused on improving the outlooks of others going through it. She has always put others first even during the hardest times of her life and it’s such an inspiration to me and who I try to model myself after.

Jen Jamar from Life With Levi said:

I just met Andrea Metcalf over the weekend and was inspired enough to buy her book that night, even though we didn’t even talk about her book during our conversation. She’s an amazing, strong, motivated woman that really believes in what she’s doing, AND believes that other people can be just as successful as she is.

Charlottes BRAVE adventure

Last week Charlotte was in VBS and they took the kids to see BRAVE on Friday. It may have been the first Disney movie in her entire life I didn’t get to take her too first. Now I am sitting here pondering whether or not my husband and I should make ti a date night movie, because I want to see it while its in the theater myself!

I asked Charlotte if I would like the movie and she said “Oh, YES! You will love it!”

To celebrate the new movie Brave, Mattel is bringing to life Merida, a Scottish royal whose family has a mysterious curse that she must save them from.

From Fandango:

An impetuous princess discovers that her reckless choice has put both her family and her father’s kingdom in peril in this animated adventure from Pixar films. As a toddler, Merida (voice of Kelly MacDonald) saw her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly), do battle with one of the fiercest animals in the kingdom — a horribly scarred hulk of a bear named Mordu. Though Fergus lost his leg defending his family, Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), managed to escape the beast before it vanished back into the forest. Years later, Merida has grown up to become not just a skilled archer, but also a beautiful princess who inspires a competition among the eligible bachelors in the land. But Merida has little interest in getting married, and the harder her mother pushes the issue, the more fiercely she resists it. When the tournament for her hand gets under way and a deep divide opens between mother and daughter, Merida makes a wish that threatens the future of both her family and the entire kingdom. Now, with only a brief window of time to set things right, Merida must summon the courage to atone for her mistake and prevent a past tragedy from destroying any hope for a peaceful future.

Charlotte playing BRAVE:

I asked Charlotte to tell me a story about Merida…

Charlotte’s Adventure:

One day Merida went on a journey and found blue people.. They lead her to a place that shows her how to get back home. She rides her horse on adventures. She discovers a new world. She goes into a forest. She finds new animals and things. She discovers a new world beside her. In the forest she brings her weapons just in case there is any animals that can hurt her.

She is not allowed to put her weapons on the table in the castle. She has to get up early in the morning because her mom tells her. She has to listen to her mom.”

(I like where this is headed..lol)

Toys Shown:

Brave Gem Styling Merida doll gives girls the chance to decorate Merida’s signature blue gown or red hair with “gems.” They can even flip her reversible cape to reveal a beautiful sparkly print. $20.99, Age: 3+

Brave Castle & Forest Playset brings Merida’s magical world comes to life. When closed the play set is outdoor “forest” where Merida can venture with Angus. Open the play set to play out Merida’s life within the kingdom. $26.99, Age: 3+

Thoughts: The toys are cute, clearly great items for kids to continue the adventure at home. My only issue, and this happens with a ton of toys of this type of caliber, is that when you snap in pieces (like the bed posts, castle steps, etc) they tend to unsnap constantly. That being said, its only $26.99 and has a lot of fun involved for the imaginative child. It just personally drive me nuts to keep having to resnap these items over and over again.

Did they like it?

Kids and Swimwear..finding fashion and modesty in one

It’s that time of the year again.

SUMMER

And if I am not mistaken, today (as of writing this post) is the first official day of summer. I seriously thought winter would never end. Regardless of how mild it may be over the colder months, I always miss the kiss of the sun and how it warms you when you step outside.  Now one of the things I love most about summer, and about living on the Gulf, is the never ending supply of water and water events to attend.

Swimsuits

Now Charlotte is a fashion diva. If it were up to her, she would own 14 swimsuits and she would find an excuse to wear at least 2 a day for the rest of the summer. This year though, I get to dress two little babes, and we can’t leave Mr. Little P out of the equation. For her, I need a swimsuit that covers her appropriately for her age, allows her to be who she is and not think about it coming off or sagging in odd places, and is also cute. For Phoenyx, I need one that can get over the big swim diaper and feel comfortable around his little baby rolls. I am so happy that I found a brand that can supply all those things and more…but do not take my word for it, let the pictures speak for themselves!

Little P is wearing the Lands End Summer Floral Zip pocket Board Shorts in size 2T

($24.99)

The shorts have an inside draw string that makes for an easy adjustment and a liner.

Charlotte is wearing the Girls Ruffle Front Adjustable Tankini ($14.99) and bottom ($9.99) in Light Turquoise Stripe in size 7.

Also comes in 1 piece version here  Girls Ruffle Front Adjustable Swimsuit

Charlotte is a size 7 and it is exactly a size 7. Fits her fantastic with nearly full coverage. If she puts her hands over her head, the tank comes up slightly over her belly.

And yes…she has a blue Gatorade mustache.

Girls Swimwear

Girls Swimwear Summer Review

What I love the most about Charlottes swimsuit is she doesn’t sacrifice modesty for fashion. I want nothing more than for her to be a little lady but still feel up to date. I am very strict about bikinis at her age, but loved how this tankini was adjustable and nearly the same coverage as a one piece, without the hassle of a one piece.

I think this is Charlotte’s 3rd suit this summer and I can tell her favorite so far.

How many suits do your kids own?
