The $2000 Popsicle

For two days now, Charlotte has not wanted to move. I could only compare it to contractions, where she would be sitting and pain would come in waves through her legs. It actually started weeks ago, her complaining, but she had no bruises or swelling, so we have put it off as growing pains. Then the last two days, its gotten VERY bad, to the point she was shaking yesterday.

And we went to the dreaded E.R.

I hate dr visits. We go around here when we are:

1) almost dead

2) bleeding and cant stop it

3) somethings broken

Charlotte goes for her regular check ups once a year, or whenever they are scheduled, and I avoid the dr at all costs. You can imagine how thrilled I was about dropping dinner 5 minutes before it was finished (and an $8 turkey roast at that) and going to the ER on a Saturday night. We get there and they get us right in, which was great. IN the mean time, Charlotte’s so scared or hurting so bad on her legs, she PEES on Chris. This from a girl who has been potty trained for 2 years. Now we are really worried. DH is covered in pee, Charlotte’s covered in pee. Do you know they have nothing to give you when your covered in pee? They both sat there like that for 3 hours.

They took blood and it came back perfect. They took Xrays on her legs. Perfect. Btw, they also took Xrays on her chest? I am sure that was a good $1000 bill that was completely unnecessary. Even the XRay tech said..why are we doing chest XRays? I said, I don’t know, we came in for her legs.

Then they wanted her to pee in a cup. Do you know what it takes to get a 3 year old, stuck at a hospital for 2 hours, to pee in a cup, who has incidentally, already peed on her daddy? They put her on an IV drip, filled her full of an entire IV, gave her a double popsicle….and she still wouldn’t pee. They were talking about giving her a catheter. Dh said no way. A catheter is totally unnecessary.  I got a catheter when I was pregnant and it left me unable to feel when I had to pee for several months. It completely numbed me. I would be standing in the kitchen and just pee on myself because of it. We took her to the bathroom and held her on the toilet and turned on the water and said she wasn’t going till she peed. It worked. She peed. The pee was perfect. They gave her another popsicle.

We left with no knowledge and a diagnosis of “unexplainable” pain, a referral to a pedi to follow up, and a popsicle that apparently cost me $2000.

Oh, and a tummy ache.

That poor baby. Hospitals (unless you went to a specialized children’s hospital) usually are not trained to deal with small children at all, so who knows what they did that was actually needed. (unless they suspected a blood clot may have broken off and traveled to her chest, I am at a loss as to the chest x ray myself). Definitely follow up with your pediatrician. If you haven’t already considered it, I think a follow up with an orthopedic would be a good idea too. Both the leg pain and the loss of bladder control can be symptoms of a back problem. (even with no back pain) X rays do not always show back problems and sometimes an MRI is needed.

Has she fallen recently? She could have injured herself in the smallest of falls, even if she seemed fine afterwards.

I hope that you get to the bottom of her pain.

Oh no, I am praying for Charlotte! I hope the pedi orders the correct tests to get to the bottom of this!
