The $2000 Popsicle

For two days now, Charlotte has not wanted to move. I could only compare it to contractions, where she would be sitting and pain would come in waves through her legs. It actually started weeks ago, her complaining, but she had no bruises or swelling, so we have put it off as growing pains. Then the last two days, its gotten VERY bad, to the point she was shaking yesterday.

And we went to the dreaded E.R.

I hate dr visits. We go around here when we are:

1) almost dead

2) bleeding and cant stop it

3) somethings broken

Charlotte goes for her regular check ups once a year, or whenever they are scheduled, and I avoid the dr at all costs. You can imagine how thrilled I was about dropping dinner 5 minutes before it was finished (and an $8 turkey roast at that) and going to the ER on a Saturday night. We get there and they get us right in, which was great. IN the mean time, Charlotte’s so scared or hurting so bad on her legs, she PEES on Chris. This from a girl who has been potty trained for 2 years. Now we are really worried. DH is covered in pee, Charlotte’s covered in pee. Do you know they have nothing to give you when your covered in pee? They both sat there like that for 3 hours.

They took blood and it came back perfect. They took Xrays on her legs. Perfect. Btw, they also took Xrays on her chest? I am sure that was a good $1000 bill that was completely unnecessary. Even the XRay tech said..why are we doing chest XRays? I said, I don’t know, we came in for her legs.

Then they wanted her to pee in a cup. Do you know what it takes to get a 3 year old, stuck at a hospital for 2 hours, to pee in a cup, who has incidentally, already peed on her daddy? They put her on an IV drip, filled her full of an entire IV, gave her a double popsicle….and she still wouldn’t pee. They were talking about giving her a catheter. Dh said no way. A catheter is totally unnecessary.  I got a catheter when I was pregnant and it left me unable to feel when I had to pee for several months. It completely numbed me. I would be standing in the kitchen and just pee on myself because of it. We took her to the bathroom and held her on the toilet and turned on the water and said she wasn’t going till she peed. It worked. She peed. The pee was perfect. They gave her another popsicle.

We left with no knowledge and a diagnosis of “unexplainable” pain, a referral to a pedi to follow up, and a popsicle that apparently cost me $2000.

Oh, and a tummy ache.

    {{{{ gentle hugs }}}}
What an ordeal to go through and to have to leave with no answers! I am stumped on the chest x-ray as well!
I would have had some chioce words about them not having anything to give Chris to change into, they could have at least gave him so scrub bottoms, right?

I hope you have better luck at the peds!

  3. AJ says:

Poor Charlotte! Did they give you any idea of what it might be?

  4. Belinda A. says:

Oh, you poor things! Do follow up with the pedi, it’s too weird. I’m also wondering why the chest x-rays . . . .

  5. themomjen says:

How frustrating that you didn’t get an inkling of an idea what it could be. I hate leaving the ER like that. What a traumatic night, I’ll be praying for some answers from your Pediatrician!

  6. Tracy K says:

Poor Charlotte! I would make sure to follow up with the Pedi tomorrow. Something is not right.

Poor Chris for having to have sit in pee for that long

  7. debateur says:

Oh no. I don’t get the chest x-ray either. I hope she’s OK.

  8. hipmom3 says:

urgh i hate going to the hospital, dr or anywhere people are sick you walk out with more than what you came in. oh and when we do well visits we are almost always sick within 4 days :(

I hope she gets to feeling better.

  9. Yikes! That sounds scary. I can’t believe they had no explanations and just sent you home without one. Is she still in pain? Could it be something irritating a nerve?

  10. Bridgette says:

Poor baby! something doesn’t sound right….I would definitely follow up with a Pedi.

  11. Sarah says:

Awww I’m so sorry you guys had to go through that! Did she have a fever? I hope she feels better soon. I know how scary it is when you child is sick!

  12. Any chance she was just really dehydrated? A few years ago I had the flu and let myself get so dehydrated I had to be hospitalized because of the severe pain it was giving me in my leg muscles.

  13. eeek – I hate the hospital. I can’t believe they wouldn’t even give Chris and extra set of scrubs or something sheesh.

  14. Christy says:

Poor baby!!! Is she feeling better today?

  15. Sarah says:

Hugs and naps for all of you. What a night. We’re with you – only go if someone is on death’s doorstep.

  16. Kris J says:

    That’s horrible.

And yes, I know how hard it is to get them to pee in a cup. I deal with that weekly.

  17. Danette says:

Oh no, how traumatic for all of you but especially Charlotte! And to leave with no more answers than when you got there. I hope she is feeling better soon. ((((hugs))))

  18. Victoria says:

Oh golly, I feel so bad for guys! What an awful experience for everyone! We had an ER trip like a year and a half ago that was miserable as well! I just don’t think little ones and the ER mix well!

  19. Trisha-admin says:

Yep! It was so wierd too. I mean, she hasnt peed on us since she was potty training when she was 2 years old, kwim? When we finally got home and cleaned her up, her private area was hurting because she sat in pee for 3 hours.

  20. Momma_mia says:

OMG Trisha, she peed on Chris? How traumatic — for *both* of them (and I’m sure for you, as you’re the mother of the child/wife of the man sitting there covered in pee)… and all that for NOTHING? gotta love the ER’s. My son is FAMOUS for needing to go to the ER when he gets hurt, which for us is like once every 3 mths. He usually ends up leaving in some sort of split with crutches or something — total drama.
