The Top 5 Most Overused Words in the Blogosphere for 2009

Last year was a doozy, wasn’t it? I think we can all safely say it was the year of PR and Bullsh*t. Note, I did not say PR Bullsh*t, however, feel free to take that as implied.

I am working on the last tidbits of my 2009 Best Blogs of the Year and in preparation for the whining and moaning inevitably to come, I wanted to do a post on the top 5 words coined by bloggers in 2009 that I hope 2010 beats up, pisses on, and buries to make room for more overused statements.

As I started compiling, I started to realize, there are more than 5.

So here are 8.

Yes, its an odd number.

Stop judging me.

8 ) Carpetbaggers-  Who can forget Miss Queen of Spain calling out the mommybloggers? Come on, you know the post. Some say jealousy, some say  it was time someone said it.  I say funny as hell no matter what side you are on and this was one word that lasted from April to December.

I think it was something more along the lines of ‘money hungry product grubbing carpetbaggers’…then again, maybe I added that part in myself.

7) Guru- Let’s expand this one…Guru, Expert, Liaison, Social Media Networker, Pro, Consultant.

Please. Lord. Save. Me.

OK, I get it. Grandma got you a computer and a new Blogging for Dummies book and now you are ‘consulting’ other Blogging for Dummy readers. Back in the day people called this a scam…now a days we call it “entrepreneurship”.

Doesn’t anyone do a background check anymore?

6) Brand: Brand yourself. Brand your blog. Brand your niche. Hello. Look around. What brand? Every one’s blogs look the freaking same!! I would personally like to thank Thesis, Arthemia and the guy that made this graphic for that.

Here’s a Free Tip: I know an awesome brand that no one else has…you. See that big box you are standing in? Take a flying leap out of it…

5) Blog With Integrity: Yeah. I said it. Bloggers + Integrity= Oxymoron.  Kinda like “FTC regulation”. You have it or you don’t. Buttons, contracts, Kumbaya statements around a campfire really don’t make a difference.

If you suck, you suck.

4) FTC: I have a feeling that this years “FTC” will be replaced with the acronym “IRS”-which to me is a lot more real then some blow hards trying to figure out how to regulate the “I love this awesome free product” statements. When are the FTC Rules Starting? What is your FTC compliant message? Is the FTC going to shut the Internet down? Are reviews over according to the FTC?

Who needs the FTC anyway…don’t you see our Blog with Integrity badge?

3) Synergy: PUKE PUKE PUKE. Synergy? Lets put together Synergies?  Lets get together and if you can make me some money, we must be synergistic. If not, your synergy must not be as high as my synergy.

Its a cast system. Look it up.

2) Influential: Influential mom blogs. We all know you are only as influential as what Disney party you are invited to and what conferences you are kissing ass at. Right? RIGHT?  Come on people, don’t bust the illusions of the blogosphere.

Jessica Gottlieb- this means you are not included.

1) PR Blackout. Can we have a word blackout of  “pr blackout”?

Thank you and goodnight.

I think 8 seems like a good number. Niiiiice post. I had to laugh at the branding one. Maybe because I use arthemia, or maybe because I totally see that istock photo on many blogs :)

  2. #6 is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!! I have seen that “Mom” cartoon caricature on SOOOO many blogs it’s not even funny! I’ve seen “her” with blonde blonde and reddish hair and most commonly, brown hair. This has been one of the MOST overused images I’ve seen in the mom blog world. CRAZY!!!

    Thanks for the laugh!!!

    Nice list.

I don’t think I’ve used any of those words.

But dang, I’d love to go to a Disney party.
