Trampoline…yes or no

[private]

I know its controversial among moms…the trampoline, yes or no. I would LOVE to get Charlotte a trampoline. I have watched her all summer long playing at the neighbors (enclosed) and that girl could jump for HOURS. Her mama, on the other hand, cant jump twice in a row without feeling like vomiting. I attribute that to my obviously amazing physique and over 30 equilibrium.

Anytime I bring it up I get two responses. Either ‘doesn’t matter what you do, what kind of precautions you make, your child is going to get majorly hurt’ or ‘they will love it!’.

Its not like Im buying her a personal ice skating rink:

I found this ultra cute personal trampoline on amazon and it appeals to me because I can put it in the house and when she is being insanely out of control with energy, I can send her upstairs to jump it all out. ($79)

DH thinks waste of money because she will grow out of it…sure, but she is only 4 and it holds up to 153 pounds, so unless we are planning a trip to Maury Povich for our 100 pound 4 yr old, I think we are safe.

I was going to buy that one Wal-Mart had on sale for Black Friday, they had 4 left when we got there. But DH vetoed that one too because he said it was too ‘cheap’.

You would never know this man actually wants to get one.

Trust me, I would love this $700 Trampoline that would take up my entire backyard so we could have jumping parties and get sued by the neighbors kid who would inevitably break his arm on our trampoline (even though he didn’t jump on his all summer).

But since I cant…whats a good trampoline size? Do you find them safe? Is getting the in the house mini one a good compromise or a waste of cash?

Every morning Reagan insists that she NEEDS a trampoline. Our neighbors have one and the girls would love one too.

My issue is how much our homeowners insurance would go up. So I’m hoping that DH will call and see on that :)

  2. I would think there are more bike accidents than trampoline accidents but what do I know?

We had one growing up, and we loved it. I recently took my daughter on our inlaws, and she had a blast. They have an outdoor one, but it’s in the ground, so no one can be pushed off. (Meaning they dug a giant hole and put the trampoline down in the hole) It works really well. The only major injury we had on ours growing up was when my brother was pushed off and he broke his arm. Now they have those enclosure thingys to help prevent that. I think trampolines are a great way to help kids release some extra energy.

We also had one of those small one person ones for inside the house and it was great. We had to take turns, but I remember my sister and I putting on music and one song it was her turn, the next it was mine.

we do have a 6 foot, locked fence…. does that make a difference?

We have an outdoor, regular sized, enclosed trampoline for our boys and they LOVE it! It doesn’t affect our insurance either. My grandmother in law had to enclose her open trampoline for her insurance but that was nothing major.

I think the indoor one is really cute, and since she’s your only child, it might be ok. Just not sure about how it would work if she had friends/family come over and they wanted to jump too. We just went for the big one and everyone uses it. Daddy loves jumping with the boys.

I would definitely get one though, whichever kind you choose. They’re a lot of fun for the kids and money well spent IMO.

I was going to mention the homeowner’s insurance thing too – our neighbors wanted to get an outdoor trampoline for their kids, but had to nix the idea when they found out how much more they’d have to pay in insurance premiums to cover the liability. If you get an indoor one I don’t think it affects your insurance, but the outdoor ones usually do.

I second or third the check with your home owners insurance…We have our neighbors trampoline. They did not want to pay the extra expense that the insurance would have been. We already pay extra because we have a pool so it didnt change for us.

I grew up having a trampoline(sister was a gymnast) and none of the kids got seriously hurt on it…it was the adults trying to do crazy stunts. It is very easy to twist ankles and bang heads. We try to keep it at one person jumps at a time…or we let our son and neighbors daughter jump together because they are very little yet…and we are both on a side to help. Yes they can be dangerous..but they are a lot of fun too. I am the type that says…playing on a swingset can be just as dangerous if no one is watching the kids. My son constantly walks right in front of other people swinging!

I think if you cannot get the big one for the yard, then don’t get one. The mini one doesn’t look all that fun. She has to go on it alone, it looks to small to be tumbling around on too. Maybe get a bounce house thing instead, you can get a good one for less than a big trampoline.

We have an indoor trampoline from GALT that is awesome. It is a rectangular shape and big enough for two kids to jump on at once (up to 125 pounds). It has a long handle bar so the kids can hang on while they jump. We bought it for our son with autism 4 years ago and both of our kids STILL use it all the time. We put it against a wall in the playroom and put a mirror in front of it. The kids would spend hours jumping on it and watching themselves in the mirror. I looked online to try to find where we bought it, but I can only find the single GALT trampolines with a handle. I’m not crazy about outdoor trampolines but I recommend an indoor one.

We’ve had a regular sized one for 2 years now. My kids love it, they are only allowed to jump on it when Daddy or Me or with them though. I love the little one and your idea to set it up inside and let Charlotte jump all her energy out.

We had thought about buying one for our DD – but then decided to get her a bounce house from toys r us instead – they are around $100 & up (depending on the size) We decide yes to get this instead because of homeowners would go up & also because dd could use it outside or inside during the winter – we have even taken it to playdates – the kids get a kick out of it.

    good luck!

I think it would be a great way to let kids get energy out, especially the personal one in the winter.

    YES!
My mother bugged me for at least a year before we got one. She gave it to my son for his 4th birthday. My daughter was 15 months old and was jumping like a bean in the first week. The coordination that these kids developed from that thing is astounding.

I bought it on line. I think it’s the smaller version of the one in your last photo. 1-800-trampoline I think it was. It was less than $200. It is about 6ft x 6ft and about 18″ off the ground. (it’s wet and dark outside or I’d go look).

It is large enough that they can do tricks alone or jump carefully as a pair. It is small enough that I can roll it around…and prop it up on the side of the house during rain storms or when we simply just don’t want to look at it.

One warning. It is a bi*ch to assemble. All the springs need to be attached – definitely a two person job and we wore gardening gloves to protect our hands – but my mom and I did manage it together.

Sorry for the long comment but I had a lot to say :)

We have one that is normal size and it doesn’t have a net. It’s also outside and the boys love to jump on it. They are 3 and 2. My two year old has become an insanely great jumper. I swear he’ll be a pro at it by the time he’s 7-10yrs old. We got that and the swing about the same time this year. They travel from one to the other! Now when I get on they jump on me I don’t jump unless one is off or one is up in my arms.

I think ours is a walmart cheapo, it was actually given to us b.c the kids that had it weren’t using it at all.

  15. AmandaG says:

I’d get the smaller one. Big ones can cause issues with your homeowner’s insurance if you don’t have a fence with a locking gate. Living somewhere where it snows, I’ve looked at the small ones I can put in our basement for the boys to “jump it out” when they have energy issues as well.

  16. Laura says:

We have one. I should say, we have a frame of one that takes up half the yard. We’ve had it 3 years, but this past summer, we didn’t even put it back up. Our kids are just too wild, and they won’t follow the “one at at time” jumping rules, so I just pictured busted up heads and lips and missing teeth and we decided not to put it back up. They’re lots of fun, but really, SO dangerous. My 13-year-old (she was 11 at the time) broke her ankle on ours while jumping – not doing anything risky, she just landed funny – and we’d only had the thing about a month! She never got on it after that.

Look on Craigslist – you can pick them up used for like fifty bucks – everyone’s trying to get rid of them!

  17. Staci A says:

I can’t help with the trampoline issue, but just wanted to say that the skating rink looks so fun! I may have to check that out :)

  18. Stefanie says:

We don’t have one…well…ok we do but it’s still in the box and has been for 2 years…ok 3! lol It’s one of those little tiny ones that can only fit one kid on it at a time. Which is fine by me b/c if it was big then it would be a crazy b/c someone would be breaking their arm and/or butt bone every other day! I would go for the little inside one. When she gets too big for it then your next child (if you have one) can use it. And when they’re bigger THEN you can get a huge one for her and all her friends to play on. And make up some parental permission slips for the parents to sign so you can’t get in trouble for Billy’s broken arm or butt bone! lol Good luck making your (err..your husband’s) decision!

  19. Lisa says:

i grew up being the only kid to not fall off the neighbors trampoline. lol

We have an enclosed trampoline and the 9,6 and 4 year old go on at the same time. So far so good. My dh is super overly cautious and he’s ok with the trampoline.

I think the mini one is a nice compromise but doesnt look nearly as fun as the big one.

we got our trampoline at Sams club and i think we paid 300$ for it. The kids got to choose between the trampoline or the large wood swingset and they picked the trampoline.

    good luck on your decision.

Well…I say first check with your home owners insurance, they may say no then you will have your answer!
