I wanted to stop and give thanks to all those men and women that serve or have served. Not only in uniforms, but the spouses and children that are left behind holding down the fort. When I was in high school, I was in the JROTC program. I loved it honestly and was one of the best students they had. When I went to college, I probably should have joined the ROTC program, but I didn’t. To this day, I’m not sure what held me back except for a few pushups. When Dh joined in 2001, it was only months before 9/11 and of course, the world, and the face of the military, changed at that point. From texas to south carolina and south carolina to Ohio, I was able to spend time getting to know some of the best in the Air Force by participating in base functions as well as charitable organizations as a spouse in the service.

When we got out of the military, I spoke to a recruiter about going into OTS for the Air force and for the Navy. Part of me still wanted to serve and after the military raised their age limit for OTS, I was still eligible. Unfortunately my grades from my BA were of a C student. I was quite lazy in my gen ed classes back then; math, history, and I did not get along when I was a freshman through….sr year. HA! I did have over a 3.0 in my ‘major’ however and I know I could have aced the exams with some work. But the recruiters gave me a crap load for my failing math class when I was a freshman (I mean, hello, I am 30 years old now, I didn’t really think my Algebra class was going to follow me around for 10 years). Even though I went back to school when I was around 25 and had nearly a 4.0 in classes, they said it wouldn’t count as much as the FIRST time. *cough, bs, cough*. Oh well. The Air Forces loss.
This Veterans day, give back to those that have served and help your kids understand the military by adopting a pen pal soldier this holiday season. (picture: Dh in Kabul and a cat he ‘adopted’ while there)

We adopted a soldier and it’s been very rewarding. I went through AdoptAUSSoldier.org and in a recent email they mentioned having a surplus of soldiers needing adopting.
Those sound like wonderful programs!
Thank you to you and your DH for his service!!!!
Thanks for posting this! I grew up in a military family and I know how much the letters mean to the troops
.
My hubby did two tours over in Iraq! I will for sure adopt as soldier this holiday season!
Thank you to all the men and women who fight daily for our country!!!
My father and brother both served proudly, and just recently got out. Those deployments can be very long and lonely. The Adopt a Soldier program is wonderful. Thanks!
Thank you very much for the comment. I feel that the least I can do is say thank you to those who would voluntarily put their lives in harms way so that I can live my life, say what I want, work, eat, blog, pray, and parent how I choose.
Thank you to your husband for his service to his country. And thank you for the sacrifice I know you had to have made as a military spouse.
I’m glad I found this site!
Thanks for sharing.
My brother in law just got home from Iraq in October (2nd tour). Last year his brother put out boxes around the community that people could drop cards or letters or gifts in and then he gathered them all up and mailed them over. They had to get a back hoe with a bucket to haul all the boxes to the dining hall. It really did get the guys through the holiday season so never think that your one little letter isn’t going to have an impact.
I have a soldier adopted through Soldiers Angels and it’s a great organization!! I send a weekly letter and monthly package.
My brother has been adopted by 2 wonderful ladies and it means so much to him when he gets their correspondence. I highly encourage anyone that can to take part in this. It really does mean a lot to them!!
btw, I love the idea of talking about adopting a soldier today….I’ll have to steal that idea and write up a post tonight for my blog….I did a picture tribute to my brother today.
