While walking through Walmart yesterday, I noticed passing the boys section, OP clothing on the racks. When I was younger, and where I grew up, OP Clothing was very fashionable. It was a surf company and was not sold in Walmart. However, I grew up in the household that bought from Walmart..LOL! So no brand name OP over here….but now, you can get it right there. Does that mean Walmart got better or OP got crappier?
I started thinking about all the brands that were big and all the trends that I grew up a part of. What was “the thing” when you grew up?
For me:
* Jellies Shoes (ugg, did you know they sell these ugly things in places like BCBG now? WTF. Let them die. And check out this picture…Jelly Heels. Someone over there at that company obviously has never worn them……they tore holes in your feet from blisters THEN. I cannot even imagine the wrath of a Jelly Heel.
*Slap bracelets. Interestingly, I also saw these recently in a 25 cent machine. I was itching to get one. Nostalgia.
*Tight rolling white washed jeans. Lets not go there.
*This one is my favorite…leggings w/ long shirts and a BELT around the middle. I actually saw someone in White House Black Market (working there) sporting this style last weekend. It was not cute then, its not cute now. I don’t get why trends go BACKWARDS.
*Crimped Hair….with a real crimper. Oh, and put up in a banana clip. SEXXXXXXXY.
What about you?
Trisha

I remember almost all of the above, and the one I remember most was probably IOU sweatshirts! I wanted one SO bad, but my Mom wouldn’t shell out $40 for one. So, my Aunt got me a knock off one, which was pretty decent, lol, and then finally my Mom bought me on for Xmas. A few months later, nobody was wearing them anymore!
I also remember the chain charm necklaces, I had 100′s of charms! I wish I would’ve saved them, my daughter would LOVE them now : )
My hair was worn in only 2 ways, a side ponytail, or a half side ponytail, my family said it looked like a growth on my head, lol! When I got into high school and finally started wearing my hair down, people didn’t recognize me : )
Had jelly shoes, Hyper-color tee shirts, or Psycho wear, Cavaricis (god everyone wore those here).. Acid wash, and scrunch down socks (and wear a color that matched your outfit, several pairs if possible)… jelly bracelets up your entire arm.. Aqua-net! I actually prefer not to look out my window, because I see a lot of it coming back today! lol
Neon tshirts, heck Neon everything. I had the slap bracelets too and those Jelly shoes. You’re right that is one trend they need to let die. Ah the memoies.
Wow, you totally took me back. Good old 80′s. I remember feathered hair, and elephant ears. (Where you ratted your hair on each side.) I also had some pretty sweet 1 piece jumpsuits when I was 8-10.
I have to agree about the jellies. Those were painful to wear.
I think the brands are getting crappier. When I was in high school, LEI was a good brand. That’s the only jeans I wore, now that Walmart has them, they are so thin and rough feeling. Not at all like they were 10 years ago. Wow, it’s been that long? Geez, I feel old!
Mood rings, big dangly earrings ….
I actually didn’t submit to most trends. I did have EG Socks, though. (Slouch socks)
We pegged our pants or tucked our pant legs into our big scrunchy socks, big bangs, and to highlight our hair we used peroxide! Strange things we did!
There are so many! Body suits, Panda rings, bomber jackets, HUGE bangs, layered socks… I have to blog about it now. Thanks for the idea!
LOL… big bangs (I went to HS in West Texas), friendship bracelets, the friendship necklaces that were a broken heart and one side said “Be frie” and the other side said “st nds”
Tight leggings with baggy shirts, leg warmers. Oh, and does anyone else remember the collars flipped up? yeah, we looked sooo cool back in the day, lol.
Oh I remember jelly shoes! And leg warmers, friendship bracelets and gummy bracelets. I also am ashamed to admit I had a hair crimper! Ugh! What were those things about?
Guess Jeans were huge where I was from. And, of course, my mother was *not* about to spend that much money of a pair of jeans. Leather bomber jackets and Coke jackets were big too.
Oooh and how about those circle things you put your t-shirt through to put your t-shirt on your hip?
ooohhh … those high heel jellies are actually kind of cute! but yea, blisters.
the slap bracelets and crimped hair are ones that I remember!! other than that I have no clue. LOL my memory is shot.
Hair crimpers, jeans so tight you had to use a coat hanger to get them up, leggings, coloured hair.
*Neon Colors
*Pegging pants
*Acid wash jeans
*MC Hammer pants
*Jelly bracelets
*Slap Bracelets
*Big Bangs
*layering socks
*Hyper color shirts
Did you know they STILL make Trapper Keepers? They aren’t as cool as the ones we had though!
I had totally forgotten about the layered socks…and sweaty feet!
I had pink Converse, but it was cool to roll the tops of them down so your slouch socks showed better over the tops of them.
Trisha…we need to do favorite music or songs next. I may fall if I keep trippin’ down memory lane! LOLOLOL
A few of my greatest hits:
– LA Gear sneakers with the laces you had to weave
– layering socks (2, sometimes 3 pairs in coordinating colors)
– legwarmers!
– pegged pants (I can STILL roll with the best of ‘em!)
– Trapper Keepers
– gimp bracelets (summer camp days)
– Converse all stars in colors to match your outfits (I knew one girl with 10 pairs!)
Gummy bracelets!! Benetton rugby shirts, ESPRIT and leg warmers and get his black nail polish!! Oh and I had a pair of bananna yellow Rebok hi tops!
I totally remember ALL of those trends that everyone’s mentioned. So funny!
Not sure I want to tell and date myself here! HAHA
Those silk bowties were the rage for me in junior high, right along with twist-bead necklaces. When I was in elementary school, we had embroidered halter tops and bell bottoms.
LOL. I wore up to three pairs of socks at a time, layered different colors. In our neck of the woods (or palm trees rather) it was ID shirts, Z Cavaricci pants, Edwin jeans, and high top Reeboks, which I could never afford. We were a Payless family by far. That was middle school.
By high school I’d evolved to flannel and Chuck Taylors which I had to buy myself. I also wore alot of Levis and shopped the thrift stores as often as I could. Back before I was a mom, when I was still cool.
I was looking in my yearbook the other day, and I swear that EVERYONE was wearing over-alls. I remember wearing them all the time. They must have been very IN in the late ’90′s. Also, in elementry school I loved wearing 2 pairs of socks at the same time-neon colored of course. One pair up high, and one pair rolled down. I was so styling.
*parachute pants
*the “Button your Fly” campaign
*Silvertabs
*Girls wearing white shirts and thin ties
*tight tight shirts and loose baggy pants
*high heeled sneakers (I had bubblegum pink with heart cut outs)
*Plaid and stripes worn together
*FLANNEL
*Grunge and Heroine sheek, lol
*Jordache
Sam and Libby shoes with the footless leggings with lace…babydoll dresses, and can we say hair spray, lots and lots of hairspray? Oh, and perms, gotta get those curls. Looking back, when I thought I was soooo cool, looks more like I stuck my hand in a light socket! I DID resist the bright blue shadow trend, and I am so glad now!
And yes, EVERYTHING Trisha listed in the post. Some of those trends really do need to die!
I mean, can no one come up with anything original? Other than the slutty look of brats dolls, hoochie mamas and such?
Now MC Hammer Pants=droopy dirty diaper pants! LOL
Oh, MC Hammer pants. How could i leave those out. I had yellow ones.
OMG…aquanet!
ROFLAMO!
1. Neon colors
2. Twister beads
3. Lace gloves (think Madonna)
4. Parachute pants
5. Yo-yo’s shoes – my mom wouldn’t let me have them because they were too much like ‘high heels’!
OMG…I could go on forever!
ok, i totally remember all those trends you mentioned! But to add to that, i wore those M.C. Hammer pants w/ a champion sweatshirt and white ked sneakers….OH YEAAAHHH!!!
Oh definitely the little clips that held your shirt in a bunch to the side! HOTT right? And the footless tights with the lace around the ankle. Oh and the hairspray. huge bangs. Aquanet was my bff.
OMG. I spent most of the 80′s looking like a hooker…but I’m pretty sure that was the style.
