Does anyone else find this unacceptable? I cant even find a phone number on the bottle to complain which is also annoying.
And I quote the label: “Do not use this adult Extra Strength product in children under 12 years of page; this will provide more than the recommended dose (overdose) of acetaminophen and may cause liver damage.”
Or death I am sure.
Is it that big of a deal to put a child lock on something like medicine? This bottle has 225 gelcaps at 500mg a piece.
Why isn’t the FDA regulating this crap.

It looks like I too am in the minority here – but, that cap does not bother me. In my mind, it is not the responsibility of a mass market retail chain to keep my kid safe it is mine. Anything Wal-Mart chooses to do along the lines of child proof caps is just a bonus to what I already am doing, on my own, as a parent.
Like Jennifer up above said many comments ago – “I don’t rely on someone else’s child proofing methods to protect my children” -
There has got to be some sort of number to call or an address to deal with complaints, but it may be on the box that the bottle came in.
It really wouldn’t make a difference to me, though. Not everyone wants childproof lids, and really, they don’t work on the kids anyway. Seriously, if you can’t get it open, hand it to a kid. Mine can get them open. I have to keep mine locked up.
I learned the hard way.. and that was WITH child locks… I have everything in a locking box now… http://www.mommybrainreports.com/medicine-safe-clean-guard/
I highly recommend it to anyone who’s concerned about kids getting in their meds…
Walmarts buys theirs, from Johnson and Johnson. We don’t bottle, we just purchase them off the line. Johnson and Johnson runs a separation to label ours.
Target purchases theirs’ from Bristol Mayers, thats the different.
It should be child locked, ues. But it is not walmarts fault.
Call 1899 walmart and register a complaint,, contary to popular opinion, we do listen
I guess I’m in the minority on this one or missed something but I don’t see where Walmart is at fault on this.
I have a medicine cabinet that’s locked so the kids can’t get into ANY of our meds regardless of what kind of lid is on the bottle. Bottom line, I don’t rely on someone else’s child proofing methods to protect my children. I do the best I can to make sure they stay out of cleaners, medicines, etc. Isn’t that what we’re suppose to do as parents???
Cheap is as cheap does? That is ridiculous!
Good catch, and luckily you noticed before Charlotte did…could you imagine! SCARY!
Wow I cant believe that it isnt child locked. Good thing you noticed I hope they change that.. ASAP!
Im going to check out the stuff in my cabinet to make sure they are all child locked
wow, they REALLY need to label that. I can’t count how many times Ryan has climbed from chair to counter in under 5 seconds to get what he wants out of a cupboard and he just turned 5.
I agree…and feel the need to add a different WM vent…32 CHECKSTAND LANES….and only ever 4 OPEN!!!!! Even with people backed up into the clothing department. Any state, any WM, anytime…..ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they will be soon. Tylenol is under investigation by the FDA as we speak and I expect to see some significant changes shortly.
Why can’t people with arthritis bring their bottle to the pharmacy and get it put into a different bottle, or put it in a different bottle at home? I understand it’s difficult and makes it harder for them (my grandmother had it done at the pharmacy for years and years), but don’t we have more of a responsibilty to protect our children than to just make life easier? How shortsighted of Wal-Mart (or any manufacturer) to assume that only the elderly/arthritis stricken among us would buy the big bottle. Psst, the rest of us like saving money with big bottles too.
Scary!!!
Their store brand, “Equate Ibuprofen” bottles ARE child proof!
That is crazy! I buy the generic form all the time and and don’t think I have ever noticed that before! Good for you for pointing it out! That’s serious!
That is totally scary! I’ve never bought the huge bottle like that, but the smaller bottle that I have does have a child lock.
@ Stef @ Mommy Musings:
thanks for explaining the ‘reasoning’. I am slightly releaved its not an oversight, but I still dont agree w/ it not being more prevalent prior to purchase.
@ Trisha-admin:
Sorry I missed the first half, I agree, it should state not-childproof somewhere on the bottle.
@ Trisha-admin:
Oh I know it is not specifically arthritis medicine, but people older people can’t always open the childproof caps…they still take Tylenol as it is the cheapest thing. Again, I understand as a parent where you are coming from, but I am sure this is the response you would get from the manufacturer.
@ Stef @ Mommy Musings:
But thats RIDICULOUS. It should say “arthritis friendly, no child cap” on it in HUGE HUGE letters. It says PAIN reliever AND Fever Reducer. Not arthritis medicine. Even on the back it says bachache, toothache, muscular aches, cold, menstrual cramps, headache and temporarily reduces fever.
I think the marketing on it is very poor if those are the intentions. It needs to be more prevalent. I want my money back.
That’s crazy. The Target generic Ibuprofen has the top where you have to line up the arrows. I checked mine. Still not rocket science for most kids, but better than a plain old twist cap.
I am going to tell you why, I used to work in a pharmacy. These big bottles are made for older people without children who have arthritis and have a hard time opening up the childproof caps. I think they ASSUME that as a parent you would know not to buy this. I am NOT saying its right, just why there is no safety cap.
“Medicine companies make two kinds of packaging: child resistant for households with children, and easy-to-open packaging designed for adults. These easy-to-open packaging options should only be used in households without children.”
Walmart used to do that with my RX pain killers and my sons RX vitamins. I was so far beyond mad. Thanks for pointing that they do it on non RX stuff too!
SCARY!!!!
Wow! That’s crazy! I see child locks on everything anymore, why wouldn’t it be on Acetaminophen? It’s been in the news so much lately with the children dosages and over doses. Crazy! Good for you for calling them out.
I knew I bought tylenol brand for a reason :p TY I will never buy walmart brand even if im broke lol
Sydnee would have a hay day with that! This is SCARY! I have had kids climb on top of my closet to get to medicine!
I’m with you. There should be a lock. That would be why our son ate a whole bottle of children’s vitamins after he climbed the kitchen counter without the use of a chair.
I just had to go check my Costco version and it does have a child lock on it. Good to know!
WOW!!! Good for your for noticing that and for doing something about it. I don’t buy meds from there but now I’m going to be careful when I purchase things from there that might be dangerous for my kids.
