Younique, Direct Sales Next Big Thing?

When it comes to selling products, or more specifically direct sales, there are a lot of options. And the options- wow the are fantastic. From gorgeous clothing and unique jewelry ideas, to makeup, nails,  and purses, there are business women being born every day.

The Myths of Direct Sales

When I ask what do YOU think about direct sales what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Avon? Mary Kay? Tupperware? Maybe you think of pushy sales women in smelly perfume.  Please stop that train of thought-it just isn’t true!

Don’t answer that. I am 36, which I do not think is old, and sometimes my kids make me smell but I do clean up nice. 

Direct Sales is an entire industry that is able to bring you unique, often custom and always fantastic products while offering you a way to support small business and your community. That is right- every direct sales purchase you make from a representative or consultant further grows that persons individual business! As a whole an entire group of reps can really push a company to be considered mainstream and very well known, that is their job, but each person that sells is the individual leader of their own “company”. They get promotions for employees under them, commissions for sales and team sales, rewards, bonuses and more!  On top of usually generous sales and commission structures, leaders like I am get to help train others to grow their OWN company furthering the success of someone else. It’s honestly the most rewarding cycle I can think of.

How do I pick a company?

The truth is you have to pick something you are super passionate about. Yes, it’s that simple and yes, its very important.

Let’s take mascara for an example. I am sure you have heard of a little company called Younique (and by little, I mean they have exploded with millions of sales per month) and their (now) very well known mascara. This reputation is true- it’s insanely good mascara!  I started out as a Younique consumer and after using it I knew I could sell it because I could not imagine NOT using it.


My friend Kim however? Not for her. I can’t think of a time I have ever seen her in a stitch of makeup (truthfully she doesn’t need it anyway) so how could she sell what she doesn’t use? I could be making $5000 a month in sales and bat my pretty eyelashes at her and nope-no dice.

It’s important that she knows this and it’s important you also know this and are willing to look at the larger picture then someone you knows personal gain. There is nothing worse than investing your time, money and resources to say..well…I guess I really didn’t like it anyway. Your attitude, your personality, your passion, that is what sells a product in direct sales. Hard work and sincerity!

I like the idea of selling something, but I don’t know how!

I get it, I really really do.

Sales has a seriously bad rap.  Let me tell you a secret- the world is changing. Sales is no longer a rep knocking on unknown doors asking to leave samples, catalogs, and calling you repeatedly every day for a month. With the heavy onslaught of blogs and social media, a big part of the consumer base is online (like I am sure you are) in some capacity. Using (and again being passionate about)  your products is the first step to creating an organic and wide sales force. The best sales people I know are people that sell without anyone realizing it.

My mom is one of those people. Last month I took my daughter and parents on a 3 day blog junket at 6 Flags and by the time we left, my mom and all the people that worked at 6 Flags were HUGGING her and telling her their life stories. She truly is one of those people that walks into a room and makes everyone feel welcome and excited- because SHE is welcoming and exciting.

You can sell things without being a sales person-it’s actually the best way.
