A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley, when he was ten years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae, winning three Grammy Awards.

He has contributed to a variety of soundtracks including 50 First Dates and Shark’s Tale, in which he delved into acting for the first time, playing the character of Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish.

In addition to his skills as a singer, songwriter and producer, Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other developing nations. More recently he has thrown his support behind the Youth AIDS campaign.

Ziggy Marley is bringing music to the LITTLE people! He is releasing his first children’s album and has invited some family and pretty cool friends to join him on it. Jack Johnson, Laurie Berkner, Elizabeth Mitchell and Jamie Lee Curtis are only a few of the artists featured on the CD Family Time, in stores May 5th. In addition to some well known classics like “This Train” and “Hold Him Joe” Ziggy has written many original songs on this release which are endearing tributes to his family with many sage words of wisdom for kids.

He says: “Growing up, music was an important part of my childhood. I see it being just as important in my children and all children’s growth and development, to help them grow with open minds and open hearts… This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity.”

I learned that Ziggy decided to do a record focusing on children after finishing the Love Is My Religion tour. Now that he is finally doing it he realize he was always being led in this direction. Slowly but surely over the years the children’s world became more pronounced in his world.

  4. amy p says:

I think its so important. I have my daughter in a kindermusik class she is only 2 but they say that your kids learn the best thru music. she will come home and copy what she learned in the music class. so i know it’s true and it’s working. I have always loved music. It can be so relaxing at times and so fun depending on my mood. I don’t know what I would do with out it.

  5. Megan R. says:

Music is important in the life of my child and I believe every child because I feel music can bring happiness and peace. I really do believe music can make my child more intelligent.

  6. I learned that Ziggy worked with Willie Nelson on his latest album.

  7. Music has always been important to me and I have taught my daughter to appreciate it as well. It is a great form of creativity and expression. She has been dancing to music since she learned to walk which is why I enrolled her in dance at age 2. She will be 9 years old soon and will get a trophy in dance class this year for 7 years of participation.

  8. Badger Momma says:

I love the fact that he’s revising some of his father’s work to appeal to children and adults that have always loved Bob Marley’s work. This I learned from his site.

  9. Badger Momma says:

Music is extremely important to our family and how we raise our children. We all play instruments. He plays piano, violin, and cello. I play cello and guitar. Our oldest daughter who just turned 18 plays the flute. Our two young daughters are being started on the piano. Music is great for knowledge. Studies have shown that children who listen to classical music have a better understanding of math. Music also is great for the soul and invokes the imagination process. We all also play Rock Band. My youngest daughter sings, my 6 year old plays the drums and sings. And the rest of us take turns on everything. :)

  10. Pamela Ford says:

Hmmm from his website I learned that he gives $1 of every concert ticket sold to his charitable foundation URGE! Giving back… gotta love that! :-)

  11. Ashley says:

Music is great for kids to be free and express themselves through dance! Kids love to dance!

  12. Pamela Ford says:

My children are a little older. I would say music is important to older children because of the lyrics. Most songwriters tell stories (some from their own lives) that have a meaning that will at some point guide or direct our children. Do this, dont do this, its okay to feel this! We are definitley a Lyrics family. Each of our children plays an instrument and all of them sing in choir. All of our children prefer different types of music but they all love all kinds of music… a gift I guess.

  13. Music is important for our kids because it opens their minds to the sounds of so many different cultures.

  14. There is a certain amount of freedom felt when it comes to music. Children are very intuitive and feel the feelings behind the music. Music soothes my kids soul, it helps them move and groove which helps them put their excessive energy to use. My kids learn very well when they are taught through music. ABC, 123, Shapes, Colors, etc. Music just calms and helps them focus, for them its both fun and educational. We are passionate about music in this house! We even make up our own songs haha. One of them is inky binky baby, inky binky boo, inky binky baby, Mommy loves you! Inky, Binky, Baby Boy, Inky binky baby, inky binky boo. My 6mos old son, Liam, loves it! Its a sure way to stop his tears.

  15. Tammy says:

I learned he will be touring and will be really close by on June 17th. May have to check him out.

  16. Tammy says:

Well, my daycare kiddos absolutely love for me to play music so they can dance around. Some of the girls surprise me with knowing the words to the songs. I feel it is important for them to hear music for lots of reasons the main one being to learn movement.

  17. Jess says:

Ziggy Marley will be coming fairly close to our area in July w/ 311!

    July 7, 2009
    Verizon Amphitheatre
    St. Louis, Missouri

  18. Chelsea says:

Music helps children to develop the language centers in their brains, improves mathematical ability, and plus, it’s just so much fun!

I think that music can help to solidify relationships within families as well. There is something really precious about sharing the enjoyment of music with our children.

  19. Jess says:

My kids LOVE music. It is a way they express themselves, a form of comfort, and a way to freely praise & worship God. They always have a song in their hearts and on their lips. (And I have to add…they have beautiful voices!)

  20. lisa says:

our girls love expressing themselves through music and they love Bob Marley. as a family, we love playing music, particularly reggae as it always brightens our day! such a great contest.
