A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley, when he was ten years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae, winning three Grammy Awards.

He has contributed to a variety of soundtracks including 50 First Dates and Shark’s Tale, in which he delved into acting for the first time, playing the character of Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish.

In addition to his skills as a singer, songwriter and producer, Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other developing nations. More recently he has thrown his support behind the Youth AIDS campaign.

Ziggy Marley is bringing music to the LITTLE people! He is releasing his first children’s album and has invited some family and pretty cool friends to join him on it. Jack Johnson, Laurie Berkner, Elizabeth Mitchell and Jamie Lee Curtis are only a few of the artists featured on the CD Family Time, in stores May 5th. In addition to some well known classics like “This Train” and “Hold Him Joe” Ziggy has written many original songs on this release which are endearing tributes to his family with many sage words of wisdom for kids.

He says: “Growing up, music was an important part of my childhood. I see it being just as important in my children and all children’s growth and development, to help them grow with open minds and open hearts… This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity.”

  20. Music has always been important in my children’s lives. Before I had children I saw a concert of young children playing piano and violin. I learned it was the Suzuki Method and children as young as 2 yrs. old can learn an instrument. When my first child was born he began listening to classical music when he slept. He, and later other children, also began violin at age 2yrs. old and by just listening to music they learned to play and also to appreciate a variety of music.

As a former educator, I firmly believe that classical music has a direct link to a child’s math ability and my children proved this to be accurate. My father is from Trinidad so, of course, Reggae music has always had a place in our home.

My son just had his first child, a girl, on Valentine’s day and from the second they knew they were pregnant, they began having the baby “listen” to classical music. I would LOVE to have this album to give to my new granddaughter!
