A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley, when he was ten years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-hop and reggae, winning three Grammy Awards.

He has contributed to a variety of soundtracks including 50 First Dates and Shark’s Tale, in which he delved into acting for the first time, playing the character of Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish.

In addition to his skills as a singer, songwriter and producer, Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other developing nations. More recently he has thrown his support behind the Youth AIDS campaign.

Ziggy Marley is bringing music to the LITTLE people! He is releasing his first children’s album and has invited some family and pretty cool friends to join him on it. Jack Johnson, Laurie Berkner, Elizabeth Mitchell and Jamie Lee Curtis are only a few of the artists featured on the CD Family Time, in stores May 5th. In addition to some well known classics like “This Train” and “Hold Him Joe” Ziggy has written many original songs on this release which are endearing tributes to his family with many sage words of wisdom for kids.

He says: “Growing up, music was an important part of my childhood. I see it being just as important in my children and all children’s growth and development, to help them grow with open minds and open hearts… This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity.”

  6. Sara says:

I have heard how much music helps in the development of a childs brain. We always have music on in the house and encourage everyone to dance and sing. It lightens the mood and brings a smile to our faces.

  7. Susan says:

Ziggy founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica and other developing nations.

  8. Susan says:

I think if you expose children to music from an early age, they will connect to it on a deep soul level. Eventually, all my kids developed their own tastes. I think it really helped all of them get through adolescence.

  9. barbara wright says:

I used to use music at bedtime to quiet them down. Now they do that one their own. One plays piano and the other sings, so they obviously realize the value of music.

  10. barbara wright says:

I think they learned from me that music is soothing. When they were colicky babies, they HAD to feel my tension. I’d put quiet music on, and I felt better (well… as better as you can feel when you don’t get to sleep enough). Both of them use music to relax now.

  11. Michelle M says:

I visited Ziggy’s website and learned that during the holidays he visited Jamaica and distributed clothes, shoes and treats on behalf of URGE (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment).

  12. Michelle M says:

Music is important in my child’s life because I think it encourages creativity. And music is just plain fun. Nothing beats dancing around the living room with my toddler in the middle of the day.

  13. laura says:

i love music – it can totally change your mood or bring you a flood of memories. my son just loves to dance to it at the moment :)

  14. Katrina says:

It is important to teach children music because it can teach them so many things and not just rhythm. It can allow children an outlet for fun without turning on the tv…I love children’s cds.

  15. Cee says:

I visited Ziggy Marley’s site, and was interested to see how involved he was in world hunger and sustainability issues, as well as how he made providing resources to children in need a top priority.

  16. Cee says:

We use music to dance, soothe, excite, and enrich (among many other reasons, of course!) in our house. From classical to rock to jazz to reggae, it is important for us to expose our daughter to as many forms as possible. We give her a varied diet of foods such as fruits, veggies, grains and legumes, and we try to provide as much enrichment and variation in other areas of her life, too! We want to nourish her body, mind, and her sweet little spirit. Thank you so much for this giveaway!

  20. Erin Walsh says:

My fifteen year old loves music both on it’s own merit and a means of relaxation and enjoyment, but it also is a bond among his peers. A way of being a part of something. Just as it was for all of us adults.
