Christmas Sugar Cookies Recipe with homemade icing makes cookie decorating so traditional and fun

What You Need
  • Sugar Cookie Ingredients:
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Also need Tree Cookie Cutter
  • Buttercream:
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 3-4 cups icing sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • Few drops green food color
  • "Tree decor" candies - candy coated chocolate chips silver nonpareils, star sprinkles, etc
Instructions
  1. Directions:
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together with a mixer until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add in the eggs and vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour and baking powder and then slowly add it to the sugar-butter mixture.
  5. Once all of the flour is incorporated into the dough, form into a ball and cover with plastic wrap.
  6. Refrigerate for 30 minutes before cutting into trees.
  7. Bake on a lined baking sheet at 350F for 8-10 minutes until lightly golden.
  8. Remove to a cooling rack after two minutes.
  9. Place softened butter into a bowl and beat in 2 cups of icing sugar. Add 2 Tablespoons heavy cream and vanilla.
  10. Add remaining icing sugar 1/2 cup at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  11. Spoon the frosting into a piping bag and make a small cut to form a small opening for the frosting to make thick, but controlled lines.
  12. Add the frosting to the cookie in a zig-zag pattern and attach the decorative candies
