With everyone doing Christmas Crafts everywhere… trees and wreaths and all sorts of lovely Santa things, I haven’t see as many Jesus/Christian things so I thought I would bring a super easy less than $5, less than 5 minute craft that reminds you the “reason” of the season if you are of the Christian faith (hint: I am).
Now this craft dates way back for my family. Like way, way back when Charlotte was in her very first preschool experience. She brought home this really lovely nail, or stake rather, that hung from a red ribbon that you could hang on your tree. The idea, of course, being that Jesus died on the cross and it was a representation of him to hang up. I actually found that every year when we pull out our Hodge podge of ornaments over the years, that one is the one that always makes me pause and brings it all back to center.
So I headed over to the local home store to see if I could tell you what to do..and low and behold, I found everything.
Here we go
DIY Under 5 min, under $5 “Reason for the Season” ornament
Need
- Stake – any size will do. The size you will see in my pictures are about 6 inches long and were 29 cents. You can also get them a foot long for 70 cents
- Red Ribbon
1) Simply tie your red ribbon in a secure knot around the base of the stake and hang! Other ideas are to wrap it or twirl it. Make sure knot is secure so it doesn’t come lose from your tree.
2) Hang this ornament up high and make sure its well secured. While I didn’t find my stakes particularly sharp, its not something you want your 2 year old grabbing and running down the hall with.
3) If you choose to wrap your red ribbon you can easily add double sided sticky tape so its a “kid friendly” craft (8+) rather than using hot glue.
That’s it! Now you have a very inexpensive, very quick craft to make that will last a lifetime and bring on your holiday conversation as you sit around the tree with your family.

I love this! Super simple and an awesome conversation with the kids.
That is very simple to make and could be a good conversation starter for your kids too.
I love it. What a simple reminder of what Christmas is all about.
That’s a great idea. I think I”ll print it and send it to Sunday School with my daughter.
Love! So poetic in its simplicity.
Lovely idea! We just had a long ‘reason for the season’ talk on Saturday. I put out our Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and we explained that these would be the only Christmas decorations for a few days as these are by far the most important ones.
What a great way to remind everyone that sees your tree about the true meaning of the holiday.
Thanks for sharing the how-to. That’s a very creative ornament – I have never seen one like it.
These are a great idea! I am going to have to make some for my step dad this year 🙂
Quick and easy, love it!
This looks cool Trisha!!
