Sedona Food Dehydrator Vs Excalibur: Which is Best?

When it comes to the big-name dehydrator brands, it can seem like an ordeal trying to weigh the two machines against one another. Sedona and Excalibur food dehydrators are both top-quality home dehydrators, and while there are some similarities, there are just as many differences that may be a deciding factor one way or the other for potential buyers. In this article, we’ll be looking at the Sedona Food Dehydrator Vs Excalibur to see how they compare.

A box-style food dehydrator, the Sedona Food Dehydrator is a high-quality option featuring a digital display showing the temperature (Fahrenheit or Celsius) and timer. It has quite a few buttons for various operation including the ON/OFF switch for the machine, the Start/Pause button for the dehydration process, a Mode button to select one of three modes (Fast, Raw, or Combo), two Mode Indicator buttons, two buttons that move up and down in increments of 10 and two buttons that move up and down in single increments, along with a Set Fahrenheit or Celsius button.

The Sedona Food Dehydrator has 11 stainless steel dehydrating trays included, along with a single closed stainless steel debris tray to catch any food that may fall through the trays during the dehydration process. The maximum temperature this dehydrator can reach is 165 degrees Fahrenheit (or 75 degrees Celsius), making it perfect for dehydrating all types of food, including meats for jerky. The air filter inside the Sedona is washable and reusable, making it cost-effective and convenient.

Another great feature of the Sedona is its Overheat Protection and Continuous Operation Mode. The Overheat Protection prevents enzymes from being destroyed by allowing you to set the maximum heat, rather than just the average heat, while the Continuous Operation Mode allows you to dehydrate your recipe for a continuous amount of time up to an incredible 99 hours! The door to the dehydrator is made of glass so that you can easily view your food and the dehydrator contains an internal LED light to add to the easy viewing.

Advantages

  • Advanced and selective control panel, without being overly complicated for the first-time user
  • All-digital display and controls
  • Made with an air filter that is reusable
  • Comes with a 10-year warranty
  • Wide glass door and LED internal light for easy viewing
  • Overheat protection
  • 11 stainless steel dehydrating trays
  • Stainless steel debris tray
  • Great for all types of foods
  • Made to fit in practically any-sized kitchen

Disadvantages

  • On the expensive side of things. Not a great budget buy (like these dehydrators), though it’s of excellent quality

Moving on to the second dehydrator in our comparison, the Excalibur Food Dehydrator is also a box dehydrator that is suitable for virtually any-sized kitchen. Though it only has 9 drying trays compared to the 11 of the Sedona, it still features 15 square feet of drying space for whatever snacks you like best. It has an adjustable thermostat ranging between 105 degrees to 165 degrees Fahrenheit for drying fruits and dehydrating all types of meat, along with a 26-hour timer so that you can dry your food as long as necessary.

The patented Parallex Horizontal Airflow is also unique to the Excalibur and allows the food to dehydrate quicker while preserving the wonderful taste and more appetizing appearance than most dehydrated foods without the need for tray rotation. The operation of the Excalibur is exceedingly simple and features two dials — one for temperature and the other for time. There is also a front cover that slides over the opening to the inside to retain heat for a more efficient drying process.

The Excalibur also features a very helpful drying guide directly on the unit that details the temperature at which different types of foods should be dehydrated. It includes instructions for Vegetables, Fruits and Fruit Rolls, Meats and Fish, Yogurt, Living Foods, Raising Bread, Herbs, and Jerky.

Advantages

  • Great size for any kitchen
  • 10 year limited coverage
  • BPA free
  • Very simple operation with two dials
  • Range of temperature between 105 and 165 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Horizontal airflow for more efficient drying
  • Detailed drying guide printed right on the dehydrator

Disadvantages

  • Only has 9 trays, compared to the 11 of the Sedona
  • No window to view your food dehydrating

Similarities Between Sedona Food Dehydrator Vs Excalibur

Both the Sedona and the Excalibur offer a wide range of temperatures for dehydrating, which is great for drying any type of foods, from fruits, nuts, and vegetables, to meats such as beef and venison. They also both offer a long, continuous drying mode (up to 99 hours with the Sedona and up to 26 with the Excalibur) so that you can get whatever your drying, perfectly dehydrated.

The Sedona and Excalibur are BPA free, making them safe and effective options for the home kitchen. Not to mention, their sizes are suitable for any-sized kitchen and fit right on the countertop. They’re smooth-operating and quiet, reaching the sound levels at or just above that found in a library. They offer ample space for drying (though the Excalibur lacks 2 trays found in the Sedona) and they’re box dehydrators, meaning they’re more efficient than plastic and look better in the kitchen.

These dehydrators use horizontal drying, which makes the process faster than when hot air is pushed vertically down through each tray. This horizontal air motion also prevents flavors from crossing, in case you decide to dry multiple fruits, vegetables, or meats at once.

Differences Between Sedona Food Dehydrator Vs Excalibur

Right off the bat, it’s notable that the Sedona Food Dehydrator is significantly more expensive than the Excalibur (around $200 more expensive, actually). This can be a broken deal for those who are on a budget or those who are just not looking to spend an arm and a leg on a food dehydrator. The Excalibur dehydrator is the most affordable option and the one we recommend you buy if saving money is your main concern.

Another difference is the lack of a viewing window in the Excalibur. This can make the drying process a little tedious, as you cannot view the progress the food is making. Also, the screen isn’t hinged on to the Excalibur and only slides on and off to reach the inside. The Sedona, on the other hand, has the entire front made of a hinged, glass door for easy viewing and removing of the trays.

Thirdly, the Excalibur features a handy drying guide on the unit itself and details the recommended temperatures for drying Herbs, Living Foods, Raising Bread, Making Yogurt, Vegetables, Fruits/Fruit Rolls, Meat/Fish, and Jerky. This is a helpful feature that the Sedona unfortunately lacks.

The last notable difference between the Sedona food dehydrator vs Excalibur is the complexity of the operation and ability for personalization. Depending on your preferences, you may see the Sedona as a better fit, due to it’s some odd 10 buttons that allow you to adjust the temperature right down to the single number; or you may prefer the Excalibur, which only has two dials for temperature and time control to avoid any hassle or confusion. It’s clear that the Sedona offers a more user-friendly experience, and allows for advancement as you grow more comfortable with dehydrating your favorite foods, but your operation preferences are just that — your own — and mainly falls down to what you’re most comfortable handling.

The Verdict

The Sedona Dehydrator

When it comes to the Sedona food dehydrator vs Excalibur debate, in our opinion, it’s no real contest. The Sedona is our pick because of its versatility, amazing operation, and range of personalization when dehydrating your favorite snacks. Though it is on the expensive side of things, it’s a long-lasting and sturdy machine with glass features that would look great in a kitchen.

The Excalibur is a good buy if your concerns are simplicity, but it just doesn’t offer the range the Sedona does and will likely be more limiting in what you can do with it over time. It’s also not as modern as the Sedona and doesn’t feature the sleek digital display of its nemesis.

But, as always, the product you choose falls down to your personal preferences and needs and both of these machines will ultimately do the job!
