I have a confession to make- I have never baked an apple pie before today. Its something I have wanted to do but my Mother in Law does such a spectacular job baking them that I defer to her every holiday.
Today, however, I decided to attempt apple pie with an Apple Pie A La Mode recipe and wow. SO GOOD. Like deliciously good.
I have a few basic tips to get you started before I share the recipe
1) Have a great knife. I got a really good knife from this brand a few weeks ago and it made all the difference in cutting really thin slices for the pie
2) Have a deep dish pie pan. Like I said, I have never made an apple pie and my little tiny pie pan which is perfect for a pumpkin pie, was not perfect for an apple pie. Truthfully its fine to eat because who needs a deep dish PIECE of pie, but it doesn’t make pretty pictures I can assure you that no matter what is below, the pie was full and tasty
3) Pie edges are TOUGH! I don’t know if there is some sort of pie edge crimper but I could not for the life of me figure out that “flute” thing so I just used a fork. The edges also brown up SUPER QUICK so I have inserted some instructions in the original recipe below to counter act that.
How to make Apple Pie A La Mode
· 2 refrigerated pie crusts
· 1/2 cup PLUS 1 Tbsp. sugar, divided
· 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
· 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
· 1/2 tsp. salt
· 3 1/2 lbs. golden delicious apples [or Granny Smith apples], peeled, cored and thinly sliced
· 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
· 1 egg, lightly beaten with 2 tsp. water
· 4 cups Breyers® Natural Vanilla Ice Cream
· 1 pouch Breyers™ Caramel Flavored Ice Cream Sauce
Instructions to make your Apple Pie A La Mode
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
1) Follow instructions on pie crust box. Basically you take your two pie crusts out to get room temp for about 15 minutes. Once they are not so cold you can CAREFULLY unroll and put the bottom one in your pie pan. I also coated both sides of my crust with a little bit of flour (this part is on the box too) and put back in fridge.
2) Combine 1/2 cup sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in large bowl. Add apples and lemon juice and toss your flour mixture and coat. Arrange apples in prepared pie crust, mounding in center. Place second crust over apples and press gently to adhere to lower crust. Fold overhanging crust over; flute edge and cut a small hole in center to vent.
3) Chill 15 minutes.
4) Brush pie with egg wash. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar. Place on baking sheet in the lower third of the oven. Bake 15 minutes.
5) When you pull out at the 15 min mark, this is where I covered my pie crust edges VERY CAREFULLY so as not to burn myself, with foil. This helped my pie ends not get overly crispy.
6) Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees.
7) Bake additional 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, until apples are tender, filling is bubbling and crust is golden. Cool on wire rack before serving. I cut mine to take you a shot before it cooled so it was kinda all over the place but wowee, SO SO good.
8) Top with Breyers® Natural Vanilla Ice Cream. Drizzle Breyers™ Caramel Flavored Ice Cream Sauce on top and serve. Do not skip that Caramel drizzle. Its the piece de resistance.
