Last night my spouse and I were folding laundry (romantic, right?) and watching some show on restaurants that fry things. Oreos, Guacamole, Salsa, Frozen Lemonade, Margaritas….and a Fried PB&J Sandwich?
Yep, good old reliable PB&J was being fried up southern style. It got my brain moving….I wonder if that would be good at home? Could I make that? While the show didn’t relay their secrets on batter or how they put together the recipe, I decided to just take the idea and roll with it at home. Here is what I did and what you can do too if you want a fun way to serve Fried PB&J for an extra special birthday treat or even a gourmet breakfast moment.
Fried PB&J Sandwich Recipe
- 4 eggs
- 2/3 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Also needed:
- 6 slices Texas toast thick bread
- 3 tablespoons butter
- powdered sugar
- butter
First make up your PB&J. I used 3 pieces of bread for my recipe. I put jelly on one piece, then added a plain slice of bread on top and flipped over. Then I put peanut better on the other side and finished with another piece of bread. You can see the top right of this collage for a more visual display.
Now create your batter (ingredients shown above) . Drop the PB&J into the batter for 30 seconds each side so it’s properly soaked into the bread.
Throw about a TBSP of butter into the pan on med heat. Once melted, toss in your sandwich. It takes about 1-2 minutes on each side. If your butter turns brown or smokes, your pan is too high.
Once both sides are done, take out of pan, cut in a diagonal slice, sprinkle on powdered sugar and serve immediately.
Yes. It was tasty.
VERY rich, majorly indulgent, and tasty.
I pan fried, but if you have a deep fryer, my thoughts are that you could soak the PBJ in pancake batter instead (it’s thicker) and double fry it. The sandwich would be wrapped inside the pancake batter if you are feeling froggy.

- I also confess that I made a second sandwich that had this Jif Chocolate and Peanut butter on the inside…just to try.

I grew up eating these pan sauted with lots of butter, Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. The peanut butter melts and is so delicious. Yes, I grew up in the south (LA. lower Alabama) I am glad you experienced this treat. It is really good. Elvis even added a banana in it. One of my greatest comfort foods is a fried PBJ. I do mine just like a grilled cheese, except I replace the cheese with PBJ but it’s SO good. I’m glad I’m not the only one who cooks my PBJ.
This looks SO delicious!
I would love to try this, but only in the frying pan, I don’t think I’d like it enrobed in pancake batter and deep fried.
I might like it with beignet batter, because that is just AWESOME.
Looks yummy! And very not guilty free!
This looks super yummy 🙂 One of my favorite fried (maybe weird) recipes is Mozzarella in Carrozza it’s basically tomato and mozzarella sandwich soaked in egg/flour and than fried. It is so good, but so not recommended every day LOL
I’ve done fried PBJ for my kids before and I remember it being SO good (but really really bad for you! LOL). I did it like a grilled cheese though, just buttered the bread and grilled it then still dusted with powder sugar. Good stuff.
YUUUUM! That really does look good! Wow! I have to admit I immediately thought of Elvis and his fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches he was famous for eating. 😀
